The Greenhornes “Stayed Up Last Night”

The Greenhornes “Stayed Up Last Night” 1999. Italy Records. Recorded by Jack White in his Detroit home. Classic 60’s garage sound by Cincinnati rockers who would be future 00’s stars. “Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler would go on to be the rhythm section in the Raconteurs [Lawrence was also in Dead Weather and Blanche, Keeler has provided vocals for The White Stripes and has performed on records by Loretta Lynn, The Dirtbombs and Wanda Jackson to name a few] while Brian Olive would later join the Soledad Brothers” (from the Third Man Records online store, which re-issued this single in 2017).

Both tracks on the 7″ single, “Stayed Up Last Night” and “Shadow of Grief,” are straight-up first-era garage rockers, with a sound like early Stones and the Kinks. Both are a great mix of bright, jangly blues and rocking rhythm; “Shadow of Grief” has that classic 60’s organ sound and some country twang while “Stayed Up Last Night” has some killer blues harmonica.
