Mind Spiders “Furies” 2018. Dirtnap Records. After featuring last week’s release of O-D-EX’s Breaker, I realized I still had a Mind Spider’s LP in my to-do pile – I believe we picked it up after 2022’s Dirtnap Fest at which Mind Spiders and the Marked Men played: Mark Ryan takes on vocals and guitar for both bands, plus “programming” for Mind Spiders. It’s Devo-esque, but with a more modern synth sound and rev’d up high, drawing on Ryan’s garage punk roots, and less industrial synth than O-D-EX’s sound. My top track is “Deserve” which is pretty close to a perfect blend of two of my favorite genres: dark synthpop and punk. I also really like the hyper-hypnotic with crunchy guitar “Shock and Repeat.”
