The Chats “4573”
The Chats “4573” 2016/2020. EP, limited edition reissue on “bong water” colored vinyl. Bargain Bin Records. The Australian young punks’ first release from 2016 (digital only) “recorded in a high school studio in a few hours” about a month before they graduated from high school. And it totally sounds like that, too! Raw, lo-fi flat and tinny sound but great tunes. I love The Chats and am currently wishing it was 6 months ago when we saw them in Vegas when it was 95 degrees, probably closer to 100 standing on the hot pavement at the Punk Rock bowling side stage. 4573 is seven quick, somewhat jangly punky pub-rock (or as they call it “shed rock”) tunes (they have gotten much harder and much faster since 2016). My top track is “Mum Stole My Darts” which is hilarious and also most like what they would evolve into: songs about smokes (also popular Chats topics include food, being broke) that are short, simple and sharp. “I Feel Good” is also good – a real garage-rock ass-shaker, as is the more grungy (and yes, anthemic) “VB Anthem.”
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
