Wristwatch “Wristwatch”
Wristwatch “Wristwatch” 2023. No Coast Records, purple vinyl. Madison-based, Bobby Hussy-fronted catchy, punky and angular garage rock. Thank goodness for Bandcamp as doing a google search on “wristwatch band” is not helpful. Wristwatch is fantastic! High energy, super-sharp, a bit snotty and a lot of fun. We caught Wristwatch this past summer at the GBUFO Invasion Fest up in Green Bay and, more recently, saw Bobby Hussy’s other project (though goodness knows he probably has even more happening, too) Whippets when they opened for Jack White at High Noon Saloon in Madison. Wild, great stuff!
Wristwatch is stellar the whole way through, but if I’m pressed to choose, my top picks are “Fux” (brutally spazzy and clever), “Fix,” “Home” and “Shame” (both groovily ass-shaking). I love this review from Maximumrocknroll that appears on the Bandcamp page: “Wristwatch asks the question, “What if the Spits went for more of a synthy dance party vibe?” This is punk rock that turned down the Ramones and added a lot more Devo. This is what Atom and His Package would sound like much angrier and looking for a fight. This synth-garage duo is charmingly grating and forcibly danceable. You will fail to keep your hips still while jamming to this one.”
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
