Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad “Introspective Resolute”

Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad “Introspective Resolute” 2024. Spaceflight Records, limited Levitation edition ‘Tequila Sunrise’ Galaxy vinyl. Hard rocking garage psych, Introspective Resolute is the Austin, Texas band’s second LP. The sound is closer to heavy metal than the swirls of the 60’s psych sound, but the twinges of space rock and the lyrical ooo-ooo-ooo’s are reminiscent of the early aught’s psych revival and aim it into the garage psych label. I’m completely unfamiliar with Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad so I don’t have much to go on about the band or the record other than their Bandcamp blurb (“The album resonates with an anti-establishment energy, channeling disdain for oppressive government systems and corporate corruption. It speaks to the frustration and exhaustion of living in a world that often seems indifferent to the needs of most. It is an album for anyone who seeks not only to confront their own shadows, but to push back against the systems that fuel them, emerging stronger with a resounding resolution.”), but it’s clearly an exploration of internal space based on the album’s title and the tracks. My top picks include “Dedication,” a buzzy and bass-heavy propulsive rocker, the single “That’s Just Who I Am” (“It’s about the vulnerability of getting to know someone at a deeper level and revealing your true self to them” – Bandcamp), another single: the psych-Americana “Alright (Believe in What You Say)” which has the most in common with the 60’s/70’s groovy sound and the swaggering, bluesy “Show and Tell.”
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
