White Denim “Corsicana Lemonade”
White Denim “Corsicana Lemonade” 2013. Downtown Records. Limited edition yellow vinyl. I’ve only listened seriously to White Denim’s first release, the 2007 EP “Let’s Talk About It,” which I bought after reading an intriguing review and then watching the video, and was not disappointed. “Corsicana Lemonade” is the 6th full-length release by this Austin-based band, and produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.
We purchased the LP this past weekend so this is my first listen. The title track “Corsicana Lemonade” is funky while “Limited By Stature” has a lilting beat, 60′s psych melodic. Texas flavor with a side of soul comes out in “Come Back.” “Distant Relative Salute” shimmers with a little Three Dog Night (for me, not a bad thing!). “Let It Feel Good (My Eagles)” starts off with a White Stripes vibe that evolves into an Allman Brothers southern-fried guitar jam. With all of these musical references, I’m glad I’m not a indie store record manager trying to decide where to file White Denim – they’re creative and modern while giving many respective nods to great musical pasts.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
