The Dream Academy “The Dream Academy”

The Dream Academy “The Dream Academy” released 30 years ago, November 1985. Tonight and into tomorrow my area of the world is expecting its first BIG SNOW of the season (like 10 inches. Whatever. As long as I can get out of the door in the morning, I plan to do my usual Saturday morning gym-yoga class-errands routine) so it’s time to drag out “Life in a Northern Town,” Dream Academy’s only major hit. The first track on the album, “Life in a Northern Town” reached #7 in the US and #15 in the UK. It’s the only song I know from the album, though “The Love Parade” did well on the charts, reaching #36 in the US and #68 in the UK and “The Edge of Tomorrow” appears on the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack.

Classified as dream pop which I guess borders on ‘alternative,’ the album is pleasant enough to listen to, though not anything I’d choose to listen to on a regular basis. And honestly, I was SO SICK of “Life in a Northern Town” in 1985, it’s taken me 30 years to actively search it out for a spin.
