The B-52′s “Wild Planet”
The B-52′s “Wild Planet” released 40 years ago today, August 27th, 1980. The B-52′s second album went to #18 in both the US and UK and its new wave good time party dance music is still so much weird fun. My favorite track is also one of their best known singles, “Private Idaho,” which was the lead single from Wild Planet; it went to #74 on the US singles charts but hit #5 on the dance charts. I also really like the other two singles: “Give Me Back My Man” (#5 US dance chart, #61 UK singles chart) with the most excellently bizarre chorus “I’ll give you fish. I’ll give you candy. I’ll give you everything” and “Party Out of Bounds” (also #5 on the dance charts, mainly because the three singles were kind of packaged together for dance clubs), that title basically summing up the B-52′s guiding philosophy. Non-singles that I also dig are “Runnin’ Around” and “Strobe Light.”
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
