Babes in Toyland “The Peel Sessions”
Babes in Toyland “The Peel Sessions” 1992. Limited Edition 10″ EP on Strange Fruit, recorded by John Peel for the BBC, Side A on Sept. 9th 1990 and Side B on June 11, 1991 after Peel became a fan of the band’s debut album Spanking Machine. It’s raw, raging and primal and helped provide the blueprint for the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90′s.
One track from Spanking Machine appears on The Peel Sessions, the heavy grinding dirge “Dogg,” but most others appear on Babes in Toyland’s first EP, To Mother, including “Catatonic,” “Map Pilot,” “Primus,” “Laugh My Head Off” and one of my favorites: “Ripe.” Only one track, “Pearl,” appeared on their 1992 full album Fontanelle.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
