Depeche Mode “Love In Itself”
Depeche Mode “Love In Itself” 1983. 12″ single, German edition. Mute Records. Side 1: “Love In Itself” studio version at 45 rpm. Side 2: “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “A Photograph of You,” “Shout” and “Photographic” recorded live at Hammersmith Odeon in 1982, 33 rpm.
“Love in Itself” was Depeche Mode’s 9th single (which reached #21 on the UK singles chart) and appears on “Construction Time Again.” “A Photograph of You” appears on DM’s second studio album, “A Broken Frame,” while “Just Can’t Get Enough” and “Photographic” come from their first LP “Speak & Spell.” “Shout” originally appeared as the B side to the single “New Life.”
This 12″ is an interesting mix of Depeche Mode’s early mix of light and dark sounds, which over the years moved into the decidedly dark column. “Love In Itself” and “Photographic” are darkly haunting in both lyrics and music, while “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “A Photograph of You” and “Shout” are upbeat and synth-poppy (though “Shout” sneaks in minor chord keyboard effects here and there).
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
