GGOOLLDD “Gold+”
GGOOLLDD “Gold+” 2015, limited blue vinyl edition with the previously released “$tandards” EP and “Boyz” single, plus remixes and instrumentals. Gloss Records. Last night we went to WMSE’s Local Live at Club Garibaldi (you can listen to the entire live stream here under 9/5/2017) where GGOOLLDD performed a selection of new songs including the single from earlier this summer “Secrets” and older tracks, like “Gold” which appears on this comp. They also answered questions submitted by the audience. One was about the their latest single which releases this Friday, which we learned was recorded at singer Margaret Butler’s dad’s home in Baton Rouge in the pool house – which doesn’t have a pool – while watching chickens catch mosquitos. We also discovered the band member’s spirit animals (Butler’s: a unicorn, of course, bassist Nick Ziemann’s: a lion, keyboardist Nic Schubert: a chihuahua, drummer Mark Stewart: a baby bear, and guitarist Willy [I don’t know his last name]: a meerkat (which he followed up with a great animated imitation). Also interesting info: tour van snacks! Butler: tabasco-flavored Cheezits, Schubert: pumpkin seeds, Ziemann: hard-boiled eggs (Butler chimed in “it’s gross because it’s true!”), and Willy: ranch sunflower seeds. Until a couple of months ago, GGOOLLDD were truly local, living and writing in Milwaukee; they currently reside in Appleton, WI and will soon be relocating to Baton Rouge to escape Wisconsin’s winters.
Between the interview questions and answers, GGOOLLD played beautiful synthy dream pop, swirling and timeless. On the record and live, Butler’s voice is the highlight: ethereal, glittering and sweet with whispers of rough edges and streaks of mischievousness, like a delightfully adorable mashup of Karen O, Debbie Harry and Kate Bush.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
