Hasil Adkins “Santa Claus Boogie”
Hasil Adkins “Santa Claus Boogie” b/w “Blue Christmas” 1993 on red vinyl. Norton Records. If I’m going to listen to Christmas music, it will be weird. Considered an “outsider” musician with lo-fi to the extreme (though he noted, “I didn’t try to be primitive, I just had bad microphones”), rockabilly and honky tonk-tinged, Adkins whoops and yelps his way through “Santa Claus Boogie.” Adkins has a more restrained manner on “Blue Christmas,” a holiday classic made famous by Elvis Presley in 1957, crooning soulfully with only slight hints to his usual psychobilly approach. Though “Santa Claus Boogie” does have thinly veiled references to sex, Adkins fails to include his other typical themes of aliens, hot dogs and poultry on either track.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
