Jack White “Taking Me Back”
Jack White “Taking Me Back” 2021. Third Man Records. We got this as part of the Third Man Vault #50 package (The White Stripes Live at the Detroit Institute of Arts) and just now getting around to writing about it. “Taking Me Back” was the lead single from Jack White’s Fear of the Dawn LP (2022); it went to #1 on the US Rock Airplay chart and to #27 on the Hot Rock & Alternative chart. It’s an excellent hard garage rocker with fuzzed and buzzed guitar plus synth. I remember hearing it in 2021 and being so relieved that he was playing some honest-to-god ass-shaking rock again after the bat-shit crazy Boarding House Reach from 2018. Side B is “Taking Me Back (Gently)” which reimagines the song as a 19th century/early 20th century saloon-style folk-stomper complete with fiddle, upright bass, acoustic guitar picking (which is quite amazing), brushed percussion and ragtime piano.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
