Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds “Kicking Against the Pricks”

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds “Kicking Against the Pricks” 1986. Today, September 22nd, is Nick Cave’s 60th birthday (b. 1957). Kicking Against the Pricks is Cave’s third album with the Bad Seeds, an LP of post-punked covers that are melancholy and swampily sparse; its title a quote from the Bible (I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick agains the pricks) as well as from a Johnny Cash song, “When the Man Comes Around.” That Cash song is not covered on Kicking but “The Singer” is, which was written by Cash and Charlie Daniels (and released as the b-side to the live version of “Folsom Prison Blues” in 1968). Other covers include a gothy version of “Hey Joe” which was first recorded in 1965 by The Leaves and made legendary by Jimi Hendrix, a rockabilly twanged version of “Long Black Veil” first recorded by Lefty Frizzell, an epic interpretation of “All Tomorrow Parties” by the Velvet Underground, and “Sleeping Annaleah” originally titled “Weeping Annaleah” and performed by Tom Jones.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
