Peter Gabriel “So”
Peter Gabriel “So” released on this date, May 19th, 1986. Gabriel’s fifth solo album was a massive smash, hitting #1 on the album charts, is on numerous best-of lists and while I primarily listened to new wave and punk in the mid-80′s, even I was caught up in So mania: fascinated with the innovative music videos (the trippy “Sledgehammer” in particular) and the track “In Your Eyes” remains one of my favorite songs ever. “Sledgehammer” was the first single Gabriel released from So; it went to #1 in the US and to #4 in the UK and its video won a whopping nine MTV video music awards. The second single from So was Gabriel’s duet with Kate Bush “Don’t Give Up” which went to #9 in the UK but only made it to #72 in the US. “In Your Eyes” was the third single – US only – and hit #26 and regained popularity with its inclusion the 1989 movie Say Anything…and remains a romantic favorite for even the most jaded Gen-X’er. The fourth single was “Big Time,” its video another crazy claymation release; the track went to #8 in the US and #13 in the UK. The final single from So was “Red Rain” (though it was released as the second single in the US where it went to #3) and a live version of “Red Rain” reentered the charts in 1994. While “In Your Eyes” is hands-down my favorite song, I really like “That Voice Again” a lot – it’s big, anthemic, melodic: so very 80′s.
