Phylums “Phylum Phyloid”
Phylums “Phylum Phyloid” 2015. Dirtnap Records. Limited edition translucent green vinyl (very helpful to see my Dirtnap Records slipmat!). Punchy, punky power pop from Milwaukee, Phylum Phyloid is the garage rock band’s first LP. Infused with 60′s surf, it’s super extra bubbly fun and highly danceable. Though it’s been awhile since we’ve seen them – and probably awhile since they’ve played out, too – they’re really fun live (we last caught Phylums at Anodyne in MKE in 2018). My top tracks on Phylum Phyloid are the opener “Can’t Get Through,” “Cold Coffee” (the video, linked below, is adorable and features the now-shuttered Fuel Cafe in Riverwest at the start), “Route 66″ (not a cover but has a definite wink-and-nod to the original), “Time Capsule” and the ode to the household appliance: “Vacuum Cleaner.”
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
