Queen “A Night At The Opera”
Queen “A Night At The Opera” 1975. I went on a bit of Queen bender this morning while slogging away on the treadmill, cueing up a random mix of Queen videos via You Tube, even making the effort to hit the “search” button on the remote to load their performance at the ‘85 Live Aid concert, which was amazing (though I didn’t appreciate it at the time, being far more enamored with Duran Duran’s and U2′s contributions). So I’m sharing A Night At The Opera today. Hard prog rockin’ opera, the album is musical excess at its 70′s best. The LP hit #1 in several countries, including the UK, and made it to #4 in the US. Queen released two singles: “You’re My Best Friend” (which is my least favorite, bringing me back to the days of smooth gold AM radio listening in the mid-70′s when I was a little kid sitting in the backseat getting carsick) which hit #7 in the UK and #16 in the US, and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” one of the best songs and most unique ever, made even better by its appearance in Wayne’s World. “Bohemian Rhapsody” spent nine weeks at #1 in the UK and then hit #1 again for another five weeks in ‘91. In the US it made it to #9 in 1976 and then charted in ‘92 at #2.
