Sinead O’Connor “Jump in the River”
Sinead O’Connor “Jump in the River” 1988.* Absolutely gutted by the news just now that Sinead O’Connor has died. I’ve been a fan since she released her 1987 debut The Lion and the Cobra and it’s an album I continually go back to. This 12″ has two versions of the track “Jump in the River” – the original appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Married to the Mob (1988), her 1990 LP I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got as well as on the b-side to her massive (Prince-penned) hit “Nothing Compares 2 U.” This 12″ also includes an extended remix featuring performance artist Karen Finley – the Sinead-only version is much less….abrasive. “Jump in the River” went to #81 in the UK and to #17 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. The b-side of this 12″ is one of my favorite songs from The Lion and the Cobra: “Jerusalem” which is gorgeous, haunting and features Stiff Little Fingers bassist and co-founder Ali McMordie.
*Image of Sinead digitally super-imposed by me onto the blank/plain 12″ single, somewhat poorly I admit.
