]]> Love and Rockets “Body and Soul” 1994. 12″ single, Beggar’s Banquet. Clocking in at almost 15 minutes, the album version of “Body and Soul” (from their ‘94 Hot Trip to Heaven) on this 12-inch single, plus the 3 remixes of the song, its “Part 2″ single version and one other track makes this release almost an LP. The album and the single both failed to chart, likely because of the abrupt stylistic change from a gothy-industrial guitar sound to a guitar-free, trippy ambient-electronica one, sometimes with serious techno beats. Daniel Ash described it: “I was hoping it was going to be our Dark Side of the Moon. It was either going to be that, or it was going to be a flop. Unfortunately it was a flop. But I’m still proud of the record.”

I’m a pretty big Love and Rockets fan but this song – and the album if I’m being honest – completely escaped my notice. “Body and Soul” is trippy and hypnotic, but definitely danceable. The three remixes include “Body and Soul (Out of Body)” (remixed by Secret Knowledge/Kris Needs, part of a house/techno group) which is pounding techno, “Body and Soul (Delta Lady), ” (also remixed by Secret Knowledge/Needs) which has more of a nod to Love and Rockets prior industrial dance sound, and “Body and Soul (Dark Side of the 12th Moon)” (remixed by Higher Intelligence Agency) which is as spacey and proggy as the remix title suggests. “Coyote” is a non-album track (there IS guitar but it’s acoustic and twangy, spaciously relaxed) and the 12″ closes with “Body and Soul (Part 2)” which is less than half the length of the album version.

]]> Siouxsie and the Banshees “Kiss Them For Me” 1991. 12″ promo-only release. The groovy and exotic “Kiss Them For Me” was the Banshees first single from Superstition and became their biggest hit in the US, going to #23 on the Hot 100 chart (#1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and #8 on the Hot Dance chart); it hit #32 in the UK. This promo edition has a few versions of the song: “Kiss Them For Me (Kathak Mix),” “Kiss Them For Me (Loveappella Mix),” “Kiss Them For Me (Snapper Mix),” and “Kiss Them For Me (Ambient Mix).” The “Kathak Mix” is probably my favorite of the four: extra extra groovy and infectiously danceable; it was remixed by Youth (of Killing Joke), features samples of speeches by mystic Robert Anton Wilson and appeared on some UK 12″ singles (along with “Staring Back” and “Return”) and on the US maxi-CD single release (basically the CD version of a 12″). My second favorite is the “Snapper Mix” which appeared on a second UK 12″ single version; it has some lovely acoustic-ish strumming, lots of percussion variation, is extra-exotic and includes a sample of Jayne Mansfield from Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (according to Wiki the lyrics of “Kiss Them For Me” are “an ode to Jayne Mansfield – using the actress’s catchword ‘divoon,’ referring to her heart-shaped swimming pool and her love of champagne and parties, and to the grisly automobile accident which claimed her life in 1967. Kiss Them for Me was also the name of a 20th Century Fox motion picture made in 1957 starring Mansfield and Cary Grant). Also on that second UK 12″ version are “Loveappella Mix” – a bit more sparse and industrial-goth than the other mixes, like it was recorded in whispers and fog – and “Ambient Mix” which is all instrumental electronica with a repetitive synth line running throughout that reminds me a lot of Duran Duran’s intro to “Planet Earth” (never a bad thing, by the way) – couldn’t find a like to “Ambient” unfortunately.
