Redd Kross “Born Innocent” 1982/1986. This copy is the ‘86 reissue on Frontier Records (originally released on Smoke 7 Records). California punk (original members of the band included Greg Hetson of Circle Jerks and Bad Religion and Ron Reyes of Black Flag) at its grittiest, chaotic and dark Hollywood/pop culture obsessed – including a cover of the fictional band Carrie Nations from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls “Look On Up At The Bottom” and odes to Linda Blair (“Linda Blair”) and Charles Manson (“Charlie”). Though not listed on the either the back cover or the vinyl label, this LP also includes the bonus track and Charles Manson cover “Cease To Exist.”

To my ears, this is a pretty run-of-the-mill punk comp for the time; not much stands out. However, I do really like JFA’s cover of “Low Rider.” Circle One’s “Red Machine” is pretty good, too.

“1945″ appears on later comp albums, including “Story of My Life…And Other Stories” (1990), “Mainliner: Wreckage From the Past” (1995) and “Live at the Roxy” (1997). The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” also appears on “Mainliner” and “Live at the Roxy,” as well as the 1996 release “White Light, White Heat, White Trash.” “Playpen” only appears on “Mainliner” (besides this 12″ of course). Here is a video of them looking ridiculously young playing “1945″ in 1983 and around the same time, “Playpen.” And here they look considerably more mature playing “Under My Thumb” in 2007. Still tons of punk energy – hoping the 8 years since then hasn’t slowed them down much: we’ll see in a couple of days when they play at the Rave.

“P.E.A.C.E./War” 1984. R Radical Records, international punk band compilation, 72-page magazine insert compiled by punk fanzine Maximum RocknRoll. I picked this up at downtown Milwaukee’s Radio Doctor’s during the summer of ‘86 and it blew me away. “Endless Blockades For the Pussyfooter” by GISM (Japan) is still one of my favorites. “Here Come the Cops” (The Afflicted – US) is punk-catchy. I have no idea what Kalashnikov is singing on “Schluter’s Kabinet” but punk in Danish – at least I’m guessing that’s the language – is amazing. My favorite track is False Prophets (US) “Banana Split Republic.” I saw False Prophets play live in Green Bay at the ABC Boxing Club in either late ‘86 or early ‘87 and this song nearly tore the place down. Reagan Youth’s (US) “Reagan Youth” is classic American hardcore.

For some reason I was enamored with Septic Death (US) and the track “Silence,” so much so that I sent my $5 off to Pushead for a Septic Death t-shirt, pretty sure they threw a poster and sticker into the package. (I probably figured a Septic Death t-shirt was the best way to piss off my parents and teachers without actually getting into any real trouble. I believe I wore it to school along with a pillow-case skirt that I borrowed from my friend, Carrie. 80′s punk fashion at its finest!)

There are 55 tracks on this double-LP, too many to list or review here. But worth a total listen for a snapshot into the international antiestablishment punk viewpoint of the day. That’s even reflected in the runoff groove scratchings: Side 1 – “What we want is free” and “Do it now” Side 2 – “This moment only happens once in your lifetime” Side 3 – “No poison nuclear power, weapons or war” “It’s life or death” and “Your choice!” Side 4 – “Think globally, act locally before it’s too late”

“Let Them Eat Jellybeans!” 1981, French reissue 1984/85 on red “election jelly vinyl,” Alternative Tentacles. Compilation of US bands, side A featuring the creme de la creme of early 80′s punk. Flipper’s “Ha Ha Ha” gets routinely stuck in my head (especially the line “We go downtown to do our shopping and we live in suburbia and I say ha ha ha ha ha ho ho ho ho ho”). Bad Brain’s “Pay to Cum” has moved into the classic punk category – probably one of the best tracks ever. Of course Dead Kennedys appear; Alternative Tentacles was Jello Biafra’s label and “Nazi Punks – Fuck Off” is another punk classic, as is Circle Jerk’s “Paid Vacation.” “Police Story” is from the pre-Rollins/Dez Cadena era though the insert credits Rollins (Henry Garfield) with vocals. Several tracks on this LP are versions not found on other releases, including “Police Story,” “Nazi Punks – Fuck Off” and “Pay to Cum.”

Side B is a bit more obscure, less punk and more experimental/dissonant in its sound. Lyrically “Isotope Soap” by Geza X disturbingly amusing (”Washed my hair now my head is bare with isotope soap”) while other songs are overtly political and anti-capitalism: “Corporate Food” by Anonymous and “Joke’s on You” by Christian Lunch. (According to the comp’s insert, he went into self-imposed exile to Germany until Reagan left office.) Reggae filtered through a punk lens even makes a showing on The Offs’ “Everyone’s a Bigot,” which is infectiously catchy despite its subject material.

DepoProvera “totally useless” 1985. Sacred Fish Records. I picked this up around ‘86, probably after seeing them open for a bigger name punk band in either Green Bay or Appleton, WI (DepoProvera are from Green Bay) and/or meeting at least one of the guys at a party. The album was produced by a local punk fixture, Brian Trash, who I knew nominally (and once cut my hair). DepoProvera only recorded one more release, an EP in 1989. For this release another local fixture, Rev. Norb, replaced “totally useless” vocalist, Hutch.

The songs are very 80’s punk and represent the style that was popular in the Fox Valley: young, loud and snotty with a few nods to local geography (“Surf Lake Michigan”) and 1980’s popular culture (“CHiPs Ahoy!”). You can listen to the entire album here for a really great snapshot into the sound of the northeastern Wisconsin disenchanted youth.
