The Quilz “Are You Still Out Tonight?” split 7″ with Xposed 4Heads “Ultra Cloud” 2020. Milwaukee synthpop /new wave retro 80’s mash up: each band performs their original track along with a remix/redo of the other’s song. We caught The Quilz last weekend at our neighborhood park’s annual Pumpkin Pavilion, where they performed an electric selection of spooky – but danceable! – Halloween-adjacent songs.

The Quilz’s “Are You Still Out Tonight?” is electro-dream pop, shimmery bright with a few dark-edged touches and nods to the early 80’s Euro-synthpop sound. The Xposed 4Heads version of the track has a driving beat and bass background, making it way less dreamy and much more urgent, but keeps the synthpop vibe. Xposed 4Heads are heavily influenced by Devo so their “Ultra Cloud” absolutely has that keyboard/guitar 80’s dancey space geek mood. The Quliz’s remix sounds pretty similar to the original, with maybe a bit more emphasis on the bleep-bloop synths plus an intro that maybe had some Duran nods (always a good thing). Both bands are fun to see live – I don’t remember if they’ve done a joint show but it would be a good one.

While neither of these songs is on this video, here’s a bit of The Quilz performance from last week filmed by man-about-Milwaukee Juan:

Jack White “Taking Me Back” 2021. Third Man Records. We got this as part of the Third Man Vault #50 package (The White Stripes Live at the Detroit Institute of Arts) and just now getting around to writing about it. “Taking Me Back” was the lead single from Jack White’s Fear of the Dawn LP (2022); it went to #1 on the US Rock Airplay chart and to #27 on the Hot Rock & Alternative chart. It’s an excellent hard garage rocker with fuzzed and buzzed guitar plus synth. I remember hearing it in 2021 and being so relieved that he was playing some honest-to-god ass-shaking rock again after the bat-shit crazy Boarding House Reach from 2018. Side B is “Taking Me Back (Gently)” which reimagines the song as a 19th century/early 20th century saloon-style folk-stomper complete with fiddle, upright bass, acoustic guitar picking (which is quite amazing), brushed percussion and ragtime piano.

The Clash “London Calling” 1979. It’s February 5th and International Clash Day! “London Calling” was the title track and lead single from The Clash’s third LP; one of the best anthems of the era, the single went to #11 in the UK and #30 in the US. A urgently stomping anti-nuclear weapon/energy, anti-police brutality, anti-corporate capitalism and pro-environmental awareness song, its themes still, unfortunately, are more than relevant 42 years later. And the band’s ethos, as espoused by Joe Strummer, is something he’d still likely be fighting for as well: “We’re anti-fascist, we’re anti-violence, we’re anti-racist, and we’re pro-creative. We’re against ignorance.” Oof, he’d have his work cut out for himself, for sure.

The B-side to “London Calling” is a cover of the 1978 song by Willie Williams “Armagdieon Time,” a reggae tune that also appears on The Clash’s Black Market Clash (1980), a collection of “b-sides and rarities”).

Andre Williams “The Greasy Chicken” b/w “Come On, Baby” 1957. Fortune Records. Another musical legend gone: R&B great Andre Williams “Mr Rhythm” died on Sunday, March 17th at age 82 (b. Zephire Andre Williams, November 1, 1936). “The Greasy Chicken” was one of Williams’ early popular recordings, issued on his first record label, Fortune Records which was located in the back of a Detroit barber shop. He released several other popular tracks on Fortune (including “Bacon Fat” and “Jail Bait”) in the 50′s and a few on Chess Records in the 60′s (including “Cadillac Jack” which went to #46 on the R&B chart). In the 70′s Williams collaborated with Parliament, Funkadelic and Ike Turner. The 80′s weren’t kind to him: he struggled with drug addiction and homelessness. However, in the late 90′s and early 2000′s his career had a resurgence when he partnered with several alternative/indie bands like The Sadies, The Dirtbombs and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (“The Black Godfother”). It was during this part of his career renaissance that we got a chance to see Williams – at least once, maybe twice (memories are hazy!). We for sure saw him play Milwaukee’s Cactus Club and might have gone to Chicago to see him as well. At one of these shows he played ‘The Greasy Chicken” and I recall some lunatic running down a hallway shrieking “greasy chicken! greasy chicken!”

George Michael “Faith” from his album Faith which was released on this date, October 30th, 1987. The LP was his first debut record after disbanding Wham! “Faith” was the second single from the LP (the first was “I Want Your Sex”) and it was released just a few weeks earlier than the album and hit #1 in late ‘87 to early ‘88 where it remained for four weeks, and then stayed in the top 10 for another 5 weeks, making it the #1 single of the entire year.

I really love this single, with its organ intro that references Wham’s “Freedom” before breaking into a Bo Diddley beat and classic 50′s rock-n-roll guitar. The video became truly iconic, featuring Michael’s ridiculously sexy ass sculpted in Levi’s, perfectly groomed stubble, Ray Bans, black leather jacket and a jukebox (the latter two he’d later set on fire/explode in the video for “Freedom ‘90″). The B-side has “Hand to Mouth,” a smooth blue-eyed soul 80′s crooner with a deep bass line, the vocals recalling the sexy whispers from some of Wham’s slower numbers (ie “Careless Whisper”). “Hand to Mouth” also appeared on Faith.

I really liked this song when it came out in ‘85 – it’s fairly straight-forward rock with an excellent beat but also has some cool effects that appealed to my 80′s new-wave self (I’m not sure I really knew who Jimmy Page was in ‘85 so the Zeppelin connection did not influence me at all – in fact I probably would have been less inclined to like the song). The B-side “Together” is a guitar-forward rock ballad with way too many 80′s flavors – heavily reverbed vocals, big echoey production and sappy lyrics. This is an A-side listen-only 45″ for sure.

We saw Diane Coffee last Thursday evening at Collectivo’s Back Room in Milwaukee and what a show! Diane Coffee aka Shaun Fleming is part soulful doowoppy funkster, part rock operaman (in the spirit of Rocky Horror Picture Show), part skate punk munchkin sprinkled with a bit of Aladdin Sane Bowie and a dash of Elton John and Lady Gaga.

It was a great set and I’m pretty sure he performed both songs that appear on this single: “Poor Man Dan” and “Get By” (we picked up the 7″ at the show as well as his debut LP, up until then we only had his sophomore release Everybody’s a Good Dog from 2015). About “Poor Man Dan” (from Spin): “At first listen, the song’s bright, brassy Motown influence feels uplifting, but according to Coffee, the story it’s based on is tragically dark. ‘Poor Man Dan’ is about an urban legend of my childhood,’ Coffee said in a statement. ‘A neighborhood man who loses his daughter starts killing kids from the block to give her someone to play with.’” This is the second time we’ve seen Fleming perform, the first was last August at Appleton’s Mile of Music, part of our 16 bands in 29 hours marathon. Thursday (May 31st) was Fleming’s 31st birthday so his backup band and the audience at one point broke into a huge “Happy Birthday” singalong, which was adorable.
