Big Audio Dynamite “No. 10, Upping St.” 1986. The second studio LP by former Clash member Mick Jones’ band, B.A.D.; the album was co-produced by Joe Strummer and he also co-wrote over half of the album’s tracks. B.A.D. member and London scenester/ photographer/ Clash collaborator Don Letts co-wrote most of the other songs with Mick Jones. Other B.A.D. members, Dan Donavan and Greg Roberts, get co-writing credits on one track each. The album has very little in the way of punk sensibility, though Jones never had that vibe while in the Clash so it’s not much of a surprise. It’s more alternative pop, though wiki classifies it as alternative dance, and I suppose that also tracks. The most danceable songs also happen to be my top picks: the opener “C’mon Every Beatbox” which the band released as the lead single off of No. 10, Upping St. (#51 UK, #16 US Dance charts), the reggae-infused and beaty “V. Thirteen” which was the other single they released (#49 UK, #15 US Dance charts) the not-a-limbo but dancey “Limbo the Law,” the not-a-samba but groovy “Sambadrome,” That said, overall the album is too bland for my tastes: not quite enough funk or grit which I would have expected more of on both vibes based on the band members and collaborators.

The Dandy Warhols “Welcome to the Monkey House” released 20 years ago today, May 5th, 2003. Extremely notable for including Duran Duran members Simon Le Bon on backing vocals (“Plan A”) and Nick Rhodes on synths (multiple tracks) plus Nick produced the majority of the LP which explains….everything, really. Plus Nile Rodgers on guitar (“I Am a Scientist”)! Weirdly, even actress Parker Posey makes an appearance playing mandolin (“I Am Sound”). It’s no wonder this was my favorite album of the early 00’s and I continue to put some of its tracks on playlists 20 years later.

I adore this record from start to finish, but I do have several songs that rise above the rest. The single “We Used to Be Friends” is gloriously catchy alt-pop; it went to #18 in the UK and has been featured as the theme song to Veronica Mars and was featured on The O.C. and Wonderfalls (so so aughts!). “Plan A” is another favorite that also was a single, going to #66 in the UK. The new wave funk of the above-mentioned “I Am a Scientist,” which sample David Bowie’s “Fashion,” is amazing and produced to sound like a Duran dead-ringer, the loopy falsetto of “The Dandy Warhols Love Almost Everyone” is delightful, and I love 80’s-styled “The Dope (Wonderful You),” too. Plus the single “You Were the Last High” in all of its whispery awesomeness — the fact that its video is an almost exact recreation of Duran Duran’s “Planet Earth” doesn’t hurt either. Welcome to the Monkey House‘s second single, I’m not sure that “You Were the Last High” charted but the band considers it one of the best songs they’ve ever done.

Sugar “Copper Blue” and “Beaster” 1992/1993, 2012 reissue, Merge Records. Copper Blue is one of my favorite records from the 90’s but until now I’ve only had it on CD (I’m actually not sure it even existed on vinyl in the 90’s). The debut release from Bob Mould’s post-Hüsker Dü band – he did a couple of solo releases prior to Sugar – is a thunderous alt-rock record that NME ranked as their album of the year. It went to #10 in the UK, #10 on the US “Heatseekers” chart and to #46 on the US Indie Albums chart. I love it from start to finish, one of those rare records that is highlight after highlight in dense wall-of-sound power pop melody. Sugar released four singles from Copper Blue: “Changes” (in the UK), “A Good Idea” (#65 UK), “Helpless” (#5 US Modern Rock Tracks) and “If I Can’t Change Your Mind” (#30 UK). I also adore “The Slim” and “Fortune Teller.” But hands-down the best of the best is “Hoover Dam.” It is perfect: soaring, melodic, a little jangly, a lot loud and simply gorgeous. We saw Sugar play live when they toured for their next LP File Under: Easy Listening, so probably in late ’94 or early ’95 and while I have zero recollection of what they played, I’m sure a few songs from Copper Blue were in the set list. I do remember standing next to stage speaker with no ear protection and probably losing a good chunk of my hearing from that show (my ears rang for at least 2 days after the show; minimal regrets).

Beaster is a 6-song EP, released in ’93, comprised of tracks recorded during the Copper Blue sessions. Less alt-pop, more noise-pop, Mould describes Beaster as “a lot wilder than Copper Blue…[its] evil twin” with twisted and heavy guitar and religious imagery. It charted at #3 in the UK and #130 in the US (though at #4 on that Heatseekers chart) and Sugar released two singles – “Tilted” and “JC Auto” – both tracks released on a limited 7″ in the UK which went to #48. I don’t think I listened to Beaster much in the 90’s, though I do have it dubbed on an old cassette somewhere around here.

Diane Coffee “Internet Arms” 2019. Polyvinyl Records, limited edition (300 copies) on clear fuchsia vinyl. Internet Arms is Diane Coffee’s (aka Shaun Fleming, former Disney actor and Foxygen drummer) fourth album and he’s still playing around with gender-bending, glammy and synthy dream pop, with a focusing on internet relationships and our relationship to the internet (spoiler: it’s not all chocolate and roses). Lots of “futuristic” electronica, some auto-tune sprinkled with gospel (ie “Simulation” and “Work It”), funky dance grooves (ie the title track “Internet Arms”), 80′s alternative pop inspiration (ie “War”) and show-tune musical flavors (ie “Good Luck” – Fleming has also performed in rock operas). I really like Diane Coffee – we’ve seen him perform a couple of times in the last few years (though we skipped his latest tour for this album because there was a bunch of other bands playing the same evening) and in concert he’s a master at working the stage and the audience. But I have to say that live experience doesn’t translate well onto wax – at least not on Internet Arms, or maybe I’m just not into this style of music when there isn’t a charismatic performer standing in front of me: it’s not mellow enough to be shoe-gaze dream pop to space out to on a long evening drive but it also doesn’t have enough energy for a sweaty dance session in my living room. It’s fine but I’m not sure how often I’ll be throwing this one onto the turntable.

10,000 Maniacs “In My Tribe” 1987. Today’s pull mainly an excuse for me to listen to “Like the Weather” because it’s been stuck in my head all day as the weather basically sucks (freezing rain nastiness). Though the album was released in ‘87, listening to it takes me back to ‘89 when I was a freshman at UW-Madison, living in the tiniest of tiny dorm room with a truly awful roommate (her music collection consisted of Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits, Skid Row and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. On cassette. There may have been some Air Supply in there too, can’t remember). I’d lay in my loft bed until 2:00 in the afternoon, staring out the window and singing (in my head) “Like the Weather”

The color of the sky as far as I can see is coal grey
I lift my head from the pillow and then fall again
With a shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather
A quiver in my lip as if I might cry

Well by the force of will my lungs are filled and so I breathe
Lately it seems this big bed is where I never leave
Shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather
Quiver in my voice as I cry

What a cold and rainy day
Where on earth is the sun hid away?

Apparently I was not alone in my college-age attraction to this album and its various social commentary on issues like child abuse (“What’s the Matter Here?” – a popular theme in the late 80′s i.e. “Luka” by Suzanne Vega, also from ‘87) , illiteracy, alcohol addiction, war and the environment. Allmusic reviewer Chris Woodstra observes “In My Tribe has served as one of the soundtracks for P.C. living and was required listening on college campuses in the late ‘80s.” A certain fascination with the Beat generation was also popular, at least with my friends, and 10,000 Maniacs had us covered with “Hey Jack Kerouac,” another favorite track of mine from this album. Those were also my days of trying on the neo-hippie label so I also loved 10,000 Maniacs cover of Cat Stevens “Peace Train,” a track that was removed in ‘89 from the U.S. CD version after comments made by Stevens (by then a Muslim convert and known as Yusuf Islam) that were perceived to be supportive of the fatwa on Salman Rushdie.

Sugar “File Under: Easy Listening” 1994. Sugar’s second and final full-length release. It may be considered heretical, but I’ve always preferred Bob Mould’s solo work and his recordings with Sugar to his work with Hüsker Dü. This album is not quite as great as Sugar’s first release, Copper Blue, but File Under: Easy Listening has some wonderful fuzzed-guitared melodic alt-pop tracks. “Your Favorite Thing” is hook-driven and soaringly beautiful. “Gee Angel” is super-upbeat and danceable tinged with hard-edges and humor. “Panama City Motel” is as sad as a, well, Panama City motel.

I’m pretty sure we saw Sugar when they were on tour for this album, so probably late ‘94 or early ‘95, at the Rave in Milwaukee. I stood far too close to the speakers just at the side of the stage and the buzz in my head that lingered for days matches the buzzy quality of many of the record’s songs.
