The Black Keys “No Rain No Flowers” releases tomorrow, August 8th, 2025. Limited edition blue vinyl, so fresh that I left the shrink wrap on after grabbing it from our mailbox about an hour ago. So new that most of the tracks aren’t available to stream yet on Spotify or YouTube. This is clearly my first listen so my written observations are happening in real time. It’s way more slick-indie and shimmery, less rocking and raw than their earlier material – this is their 13th studio LP. According to a review from another pre-release source, The Black Keys employed songwriters for this album, including “Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves) [who] helps to buff up the grimy rock of ‘The Night Before,’ Rick Nowels (Lana Del Rey) [who] adds a coat of radio gloss to the dreamy title track [‘No Rain No Flowers‘] and The Roots/ Dr. Dre keyboard player [and hip hop producer] Scott Storch [who] colours ‘Babygirl‘ with tasteful piano and organ.” There’s some 80’s style blue-eyed soul flavoring (think Joe Jackson, Hall & Oates, etc.) sprinkled throughout the smooth pop like on “Make You Mine;” it’s a great song but if I heard it in the wild there are zero chances I would have guessed it was the Keys. As another reviewer from Pitchfork notes, songs like ‘On Repeat‘ and ‘Kiss It’ float along to hooks that feel excavated from the golden age of AM radio.” And on “All My Life” they kinda go straight-up disco (it’s fun!). My top track is the buzzy, fuzzy, NOT poppy dark-edged ass-shaking “Man on a Mission” which does sound like band. I also like the jangle rocker “A Little Too High” and the aforementioned “The Night Before.” Overall: I certainly don’t mind bands changing, evolving, especially ones that have been around as long as The Black Keys have, but I’m not sure about the general direction this record is taking them in.

The Other Kids “Living in the Mirror” 1985. Boat Records. Produced by Butch Vig, recorded at Smart Studios; mid-80’s jangly Midwestern alternative power pop. Think The Replacements with less of edge and a smattering of R.E.M and Cheap Trick. Our copy clearly used, and likely part of the Cafe Voltaire dj collection based on the cover graffiti. Cafe Voltaire was a short-lived mid-80’s Bay View/Milwaukee club that became the Odd Rock in ’87 (an infamous music venue that hosted bands like Social Distortion – that show notorious for a bunch of arrests and general mayhem – I still stories about it to this day). My guess is that Madison-based The Other Kids most likely performed at Cafe Voltaire and dropped off a copy of their debut LP after the show. The Other Kids were as short-lived as Cafe Voltaire, recording two records in ’85 and ’87, though it looks like they have reunited for shows on and off in subsequent years. My favorite track is the glam-inspired “She’s Got Me Where It Hurts” which is edgier than most of the album – a real rocker. The only version I can find is a live one, recorded at the UW Madison Field House, probably in ’85. The album track is much better. The rest of the songs are fine (the production: excellent), but kind of bland in a jangly, shimmery very 80’s way. The title track exemplifies that sound and vibe pretty well.

As this is very obscure band, there is next to nothing online but I did find this live performance “Where the Wild Things Are” (not on Living in the Mirror) from ’87 at the now gone but not forgotten and also infamous O’Cayz Corral (Madison):

Kyle Craft & Showboat Honey “Showboat Honey” 2019. Blue Splatter (“Loser Edition”) vinyl, Sub Pop Records. Alt-rock with a psychedelic, glitter indie edge. The tracks range from groovy psych rockers (feeling a bit Ty Seagal) to soaring jangly dream pop (so many bands these days fall into that category but what jumps to my mind is a band most won’t know of, Me Like Bees). Anyway, I’m partial to the psych-rockers; my top picks are the opener “Broken Mirror Pose” and the second track “O! Lucky Hand.” Midtempo ass-shakers with swagger. “Deathwish Blue” is John Lennonesque and anthemic and “Buzzkill Caterwaul” feels like Sgt. Pepper was hanging out with T. Rex (it’s great!). The dreamier songs, like “Blackhole-Joyride” and “Bed of Needles” would be perfect for an outdoor summer solstice show, with lawn chairs and fireflies. “Sunday Driver” mashes up both vibes. The disconnect between the styles on this record are explained on their Bandcamp page:

After years of touring, two LPs with Sub Pop Records, and solidifying the band, he’s since grown into a prodigious songwriter, to say the least. The band recorded Showboat Honey—co-produced by Craft, Clark, and Slater—at their own Moonbase Studios in Portland over 2018. “We approached this record differently for sure,” Craft says. “I’d make a demo, and after putting the songs together, shoot it to the band for ideas.” Tracks such as “Broken Mirror Pose” ended up being highly collaborative, while others settled into Craft’s original vision. “Deathwish Blue,” for instance, was tracked in a similar fashion to his solo debut, Dolls of Highland, with Craft tracking every instrument by himself.

Kyle and the members of Showboat Honey worked at such a feverish wine-fueled pace that they actually ended up with two completely different albums. But at the end of the day, they decided to combine the two into what is now Showboat Honey, a moonstruck rock ’n’ roll record teeming with reckless abandon.

Plague Vendor “By Night” 2019. Epitaph Records. Noisy, hard-rocking post-punk that is, as the band’s name and LP title suggest, super dark. By Night is the California-based band’s third full-length record. This is one of those albums I literally know nothing about- same with the band, it just appeared on my to-do stack, without context. That said, I had zero expectations throwing it on the platter and am pleased to find out that it’s pretty great. Relentless beats, some real ass-shakers, some malevolent psychedelic swirls: think Black Rebel Motorcycle Club meets the big-dick energy of Queens of the Stone Age and then add a dash of Black Angels’ smoke-tinged neo-psychedelia space rock. The opener “New Comedown” grabs you by the throat and pretty much never lets go. “Let Me Get High/Low” and “Night Sweats” are both high-energy stoner rock (an oxymoron but it works) and “Prism” is an all-out butt-shaking banger. “Pain in My Heart” is reminiscent of the chaotic noise-rock of Sonic Youth with extra alt-metal screaming and then the grungy “Snakeskin Boots” goes off the rails, combining rap, thrash and funk. The album closes with another buzzy, fuzzy ass-shaker, “In My Pocket.” It looks like Plague Vendor is on tour this spring with another band I don’t know (L.S. Dunes) and will be playing in Madison in April. Might have to check these guys out live.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre “Something Else” 2018. A Recordings, on white vinyl. Jangly neo-psychedelic alt-rock, Something Else is the band’s 17th LP. In their almost 25 year career they’ve released 20 LP’s (plus comps, live albums, EP’s, etc.) though it remains to be seen if more are coming: during a performance in 2023 the notoriously volatile frontman Anton Newcombe hit guitarist Ryan Van Kriedt over the head with a guitar which ended the show and the rest of the tour (see below). Anyway! I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and intentionally listed to a full record by BJM, though I’m certainly aware of their music and watched Dig!, the 2004 documentary about them and the Dandy Warhols (who I adore – it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it and I feel like I should watch it again).

Something Else is really great. I adore a buzzy, garagey psych rock sound and this album is chock full of it. My top track is the jangle-forward, ass-shaking “Skin and Bones” which reminds me a lot of 80’s era Echo & the Bunnymen. I also really like the groovy, hypnotic 60’s-styled, touch of Velvet instrumental “Animal Wisdom” and another animal themed-stomper “Who Dreams of Cats?”

The opener was [yawn] and Fontaines were fine. Both channeling a 90’s sloppy rave kid vibe. I didn’t have that high of expectations because I’ve found their last two releases (Skinty Fia, 2022 and Romance, 2024) to be lackluster and a bit boring. A Hero’s Death is pretty good, though not as exciting as their debut Dogrel (2019). Definitely more psychedelic with some good rocking moments. It went to #2 in the UK and hit #44 on the US Indie chart; it was nominated for a Grammy in 2021 and received widespread critical acclaim including 5 out of 5 stars from The Guardian. As is my preference, my top picks are the rockers. “Televised Mind” is great psych rock, and while pretty messy, I also like the upbeat swirly tracks “A Lucid Dream” and “Living in America” plus the Velvet-esque “I Was Not Born.” They released two singles from A Hero’s Death: the downbeat and angular opener “I Don’t Belong” which only charted in their native Ireland at #86, and the title track “A Hero’s Death” which is one of my other favorites from the LP – it’s an odd pick for a single with a driving beat, fuzzy psych guitars, and some ooo-aaa harmony backing vocals behind more spoken than sung vocals. That track sort of charted – going to #67 on the UK “Download Singles” chart, to #90 in Ireland and #30 in Scotland.

Yard Act “The Overload” 2022. Island Records. Limited edition “Ghetto Lettuce” green vinyl. We caught Yard Act last night at X-Ray Arcade (Cudahy) and holy sh*t what a show! Sold-out, energy to the ceiling, non-stop dancing (I estimate I danced about 1.5 miles from the number of steps my watch tracked). Definitely one of the top performances we’ve seen this year, probably ranks in the top 50 of all time. Lyrically heavy with social commentary, they make politics an all-out party with a combo of funk, disco, no-wave, alt-dance and a stage chock-full with musicians (James Smith-vocals, Ryan Needham-bass, Sam Shipstone-guitar, Jay Russell-drums, Chris Duffin-sax/keys) and two stellar backup singers/dancers/hype-women Lauren Fitzpatrick and Daisy Smith. Fitzpatrick and Smith also provided rhythm backup with tambourines and some device that had the Prince symbol Ƭ̵̬̊ I have no idea what it does or really how to explain it but it was very cool.

The Overload is Yard Act’s debut LP (they released an EP in 2021); it went to #2 in the UK. Just like the show, it’s almost a non-stop party but smart, a little biting and, at times, arty/weird. They played a bunch of tracks from The Overload last night, fortunately all of my favorites. They led off with “Dead Horse” (a sharp critique on capitalism and racism, to a great groovy beat!), followed by another favorite “Payday” and “Land of the Blind.”

My absolute top pick is the title track “The Overload” – I’m pretty sure this one put me over the mile mark for dance steps and by this time I was absolutely dripping with sweat (as was the band); they followed it up with “100% Endurance” (the album closer). Not shown on the set list was the encore, “Witness” – another favorite – which was short, punky, fast and brilliant.

They also played several songs from their latest release, Where’s My Utopia? (2024), also fantastic. Hoping to see Yard Act again soon – though I’m not sure it will be at such a small venue again.

Lung/Conan Neutron and the Secret Friends “Adult Prom” 2023. Learning Curve Records, multi-color splattered vinyl. Split LP, with Cincinnati’s metal/punk cello duo Lung on Side A and noisy power pop via (now) Milwaukee’s Conan Neutron on Side B. Despite living in Milwaukee I’m not sure that I’ve seen Conan Neutron perform (maybe??) but we have seen Lung many times – twice this summer! – including this past Saturday night at X-Ray Arcade (Cudahy). It was a particularly wild show – the first Lung performance I’ve been at with a mosh pit (it was a local band’s record release party and their fan base is very young and exuberant) – and Lung were top-notch as always, with extra-energy most likely provided by the super-receptive crowd.

Adult Prom is a great, if unusual, split LP. Lung’s side is heavy – it can’t help but be with all low-end drums and cello. Lung covers a Conan Neutron track, “The Impossible Task” from the 2020 Dark Passengers album, making the song sparse and sinister. My top pick on the Lung side is “Anyone Else,” which is also a bit sparse and sinister but has a classical music edge that makes it ultra-unique for a “rock” record. Conan Neutron’s side has a much more traditional grungy rock-n-roll sound (as compared to Lung), with guitar, bass and drums (plus sitar! so not that traditional). They cover Lung’s “I’m Nervous” from the 2021 LP Come Clean Right Now and it’s my favorite on the Conan-side. It’s ass-shaking: they keep the low-end and add some cocky alt-rock swagger. Lung’s Kate Wakefield also duets with Conan on “Fridging;” their vocal styles could not be more different but the song totally works. Actually the entirety of Side B is pretty great and I really need to make an effort to get to one of their shows since they’re now based here in Milwaukee.

“Wild Antics” is the first track on Conan Neutron’s side, it’s a great song but including the video here because it’s silly and it was directed and edited by the infamous Milwaukee indie filmmaker Mark Borchardt, subject of the cult classic American Movie (1999).

The Dandy Warhols “Rockmaker” 2024. Beat the World/Sunset Blvd Records. Limited edition “Sea Glass Blue” vinyl. Buzzy neo-psych alternative rock, the 12th studio LP from the 90’s/early 00’s indie darlings (I was/am a huge fan of their first few releases). We finally got a chance to see them live this past weekend at Summerfest! I know they played at least a couple of songs from this new album but I didn’t get a chance to listen to it prior but I’m fairly certain they played the high energy rocker and first single from Rockmaker “Summer of Hate” and possibly the super-funky “Root of All Evil.” They for sure played a few of my old faves: “We Used to Be Friends,” “You Were the Last High” (which holds a special place in my heart as Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes produced the record and its video is a recreation of D2’s “Planet Earth”) and of course their big hit “Bohemian Like You.” Another highlight was their cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” which they introduced as “a song we’ve been waiting 40 years to play in Wisconsin.” Though I really don’t like the original, I absolutely sang along with the rest of the crowd.

I haven’t really kept up with Dandy Warhols’ releases for the past 20 years so I’m writing from a place of relative ignorance, but Rockmaker is just as strong, maybe even better overall, as their material from 25 years ago. Besides “Summer of Hate,” I am totally digging the entire record with standouts including the slinky, ass-shaking “Teutonic Wine,” the two other singles: heavy, shredding rocker (courtesy of Slash) “I’d Like to Help You with Your Problem” and “Danzig with Myself” which features another, slightly elder indie darling Black Frances of the Pixies. Also of note is the sinister album-closer “I Will Never Stop Loving You” which features a not-sinister Debbie Harry.

Hole “Live Through This” released 30 years ago today, April 12th, 1994. A rare CD pull today because in 1994 I was pretty much only buying CD’s. Hole’s second album went to #52 in the US and to #13 in the UK; both Rolling Stone and Spin ranked it as the best album of the year. I listened to it a lot in ’94, so much so that I got thoroughly sick of it and haven’t really touched it in the past 30 years. Thematically it’s a challenging record, with lyrics that discuss the objectification of and violence against women, being a mom, depression, and drug use (Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain’s daughter was taken away from them for a bit as an infant because of their alleged heroin use). Parts of the record were even recorded while some of the band members were high on crystal meth (specifically drummer Patty Schemel and bassist Kristen Pfaff).

Because this album is so imprinted in my consciousness it’s really hard to highlight my top tracks but if pushed, I’d choose the rocker “Plump” which I’m fairly certain is about drugs and motherhood. The singles are also all great. “Miss World” was the first to be released; it hit #13 in the US and #64 in the UK. It is, partially, also about drugs. “Doll Parts” went all the way to #4 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart (to #58 on the regular chart and to #16 UK); it’s about Kurt Cobain. “Violet” was the third single, going to #29 on the Modern Rock chart (#17 UK) and supposedly is about Love’s relationship with Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan. “Softer, Softest” was the final single from Live Through This and went to #32 on the Alternative Airplay chart in the US. Cobain provided backing vocals for the track (same for “Asking for It” which is another great song). As the title implies, “Softer, Softest” is one of the most mellow tracks on the record but the lyrics are…not (“Burn the witch/Just bring me back her head”).
