Bauhaus “Burning From the Inside” 1983. Today, July 11th, is Peter Murphy’s 65th birthday (b. 1957). Burning From the Inside was Bauhaus’ fourth LP and would have been their last – they broke up before its release – but they got back together to record another over 20 years later, the 2008 album Go Away White. Murphy was very ill during Burning‘s writing and recording (his absence during much of the processes was one factor that led to the band’s dissolution) so “Who Killed Mr. Moonlight” has David J on vocals and “Slice of Life” features Daniel Ash. It’s a dark and gothically beautiful record: the best track is also its most successful “She’s In Parties.” That track, according to Allmusic, was written much earlier in the band’s history and they dug it up, needing more material due to Murphy’s sickness. It ended up being Bauhaus’ last released single and it went to #26 in the UK. I also really like the industrial-goth “Honeymoon Croon,” the Bowie-glam styled “Kingdom’s Coming” and the title track “Burning From the Inside,” a 10 minute epic hallucinatory journey that apparently was inspired by a hash-smoking incident where the inside of a car started on fire.

I’ve seen Love and Rockets (in ’89), Peter Murphy (solo in 2016) and Pop Tone (Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, along with Haskins’ daughter Diva Dompé in 2018) perform but thought Bauhaus was something that would always remain out of reach. BUT! The original lineup has gotten back together to tour this fall and we have tickets to see them in Detroit.

Bauhaus “Ziggy Stardust” released October, 1982. 12″ single on Beggar’s Banquet. The masters of goth’s 8th single was a tribute to the master of glam – they were huge Bowie fans – and is close to perfection; it went to #15 on the UK singles chart. According to Far Out Magazine the video for “Ziggy Stardust” was shot in the catacombs of Camden Market (actually just a series of tunnels but that’s what the locals call them) and features a full mock-gig set up with complete backline and riotous fans. It would act as a catapult for the band, eventually landing them a spot on the acclaimed show Top of the Pops. Fittingly, I picked up this 12″ in Camden a couple of months ago (or maybe it was in Islington, possibly SoHo. I can’t remember). Also on this 12″ is a Bauhaus original, “Party of the First Part” which is really weird and seriously creepy (perfect for Halloween season), a swinging little number with dialogue from the cartoon The Devil and Daniel Mouhaus. Side B has the Brian Eno-penned track “Third Uncle” that is Peter Murphy’d and Daniel Ash’d up (dark and slinky vocals, a sinister screaming, vaguely industrial guitar; it also appears on Bauhaus’ 1982 LP The Sky’s Gone Out) and a fairly rough live cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Waiting for the Man,” recorded in October 1981 at Fagin’s in Manchester. Nico herself joined Bauhaus on stage for the song. Southern Death Cult (later, just The Cult) was the supporting act and Ian Astbury said about the scene, “Nico just ended up in Manchester on heroin. Southern Death Cult supported Bauhaus at Salford University when she did ‘Waiting for the Man’ with them, and Pete Murphy had to hold her up, she was so smacked out!” And Peter Murphy stated, “Nico was gothic, but she was Mary Shelley gothic to everyone else’s Hammer horror film gothic. They both did Frankenstein, but Nico’s was real.” (from dangerousminds)

Bauhaus “Bauhaus 1979-1983″ 1985, Beggars Banquet. I’m cleansing my palette after two days of soft rock with a spin of dark gothic post-punk, a double LP comp of many of Bauhaus’ best and some lesser known tracks. Bauhaus 1979-1983 went to #36 in the UK and Spin ranks it in the top 10 of the best and most essential goth albums.

Side A is simply amazing, five of my favorite Bauhaus songs back-to-back: “Double Dare,” “In the Flat Field,” (both on their debut In the Flat Field), “Dark Entries” (released as a single in ‘80),” “Stigmata Martyr” (also on In the Flat Field) and “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” (the live version from Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape, released in ‘82), which was the band’s first-ever released single in 1979 and widely considered to be the first goth rock record. Side B is just as strong, starting off with the great cover of T. Rex’s “Telegram Sam” (Bauhaus’ from ‘80, T. Rex’s from ‘72; I love them both). A couple of other favorites are the single “Terror Couple Kill Colonel” from ‘80 and “The Passion of Lovers,” which Bauhaus released as a single in ‘81, hitting #56 on the UK chart. Also on Side B are tracks from In the Flat Field “St. Vitus Dance” and “A Spy in the Cab” as well as the title track “Mask” from their second album released in 198. Side C kicks off with more from Mask: “Kick in the Eye” (which they released as the second single from the LP), “Hollow Hills” and “In Fear of Fear.” Next up is a fantastic cover of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” and a single from ‘83 “Lagartija Nick” which went to #44 in the UK. Side D leads with a Brian Eno-penned song, “Third Uncle,” and then moves into two singles, “Spirit” from ‘82 (#42 on the UK chart) and “She’s in Parties” from ‘83 which also appears on Burning From the Inside. “She’s in Parties” was the band’s last single release; it went to #26 in the UK. Also on Side D is “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” from The Sky’s Gone Out (1982) as well as “The Sanity Assassin” (a non-album fan club only single) and “Crowds.”

I feel so, so much better now.

Poptone “Poptone” 2018, limited edition double LP on white vinyl. Cleopatra Records. We visited Minneapolis last week, as did Poptone, so we got to see Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love and Rockets who are, along with Haskins’ daughter Diva Dompe, performing as Poptone at First Avenue. (Though I’ve been to Minneapolis many, many times, this was my first show at First Avenue and all I could do was giddily picture Purple Rain era Prince and Morris Day and The Time videos.) I also picked up this album at the show.

In concert and on Poptone, Ash and Haskins focus on revamps of previous material – most even darker and heavier than their unique industrial goth, which was pretty heavy and dark to start with – with lots of Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets tracks. I was in heaven! Tones on Tail songs they played that appear on Poptone included “Movement of Fear,” “Lions” “Performance” and “Go!” The Love & Rockets selections were “Mirror People,” “No Big Deal,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Love Me” and “American Dream.” Not on Poptone, their First Avenue set had a ton of other Love & Rockets’ selections: “Motorcycle,” “Haunted (When the Minutes Drag),” “All In My Mind,” and “Yin and Yang The Flowerpot Man.” The last time I saw Love and Rockets was in 1989 when they were on tour for their 1989 album Love and Rockets. That fall, either right before or after that concert, a friend of mine and I took the Greyhound bus to Minneapolis from Madison, WI to visit her sister and see a guy I was dating who went to the University. Her sister’s boyfriend drove us around town at full speed while blasting Love and Rockets, so it just felt right to be hearing those songs again at First Avenue.

Daniel Ash “This Love” 1991. 12″ single from the album Coming Down, Beggars Banquet records. This upcoming Sunday July 31st is Daniel Ash’s birthday (b. 1957). Ash has released several solo albums since his first, Coming Down, but is probably better known for his work with Bauhaus, Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets.

The songs on the 12″ single are, not surprisingly given Ash’s style, sinister waves riding on dark romanticism. “This Love” has an industrial flavor that is punctuated with a locomotive rhythm and Ash’s “dry Bolanesque purr.” “Heaven is Waiting,” the second song on Side A, is a shoe-gazing swaying instrumental. Side B has just one track, “Coming Down (slow version)” which differs from the album version, “Coming Down Fast.” It is beautiful, sultry yet vampire-cold, using guitar effects that evoke flickering candles in a dark gothic cathedral.

Bauhaus “In The Flat Field” 1980. 4AD Records. Last night we saw Peter Murphy perform at Turner Hall in Milwaukee as part of his ‘Stripped’ tour. Murphy charged his performance with regal and slinky energy, with perhaps a bit more sitting than 35 years ago, but he still busted out his crucifixion arms and black-booted goth ballerina toe kicks. His voice is still strong, too, filled with drama, dark brooding and maniacal sing-shouts. Too many show highlights to fully list but one particularly great song was “Hollow Hills.” Another fun moment was when Murphy started cracking up while singing – the source of his amusement was two young kids who were at the front of the stage and falling asleep toward the end of the show. He brought them onstage and gave the girl’s stuffed Pokemon a kiss, then sent the kids backstage for a more comfortable spot to rest. It was goth-adorable.

In The Flat Field is a masterpiece of an album. Allmusic says “Few debut albums ever arrived so nearly perfectly formed; that In the Flat Field practically single-handedly invented what remains for many as the stereotype of goth music – wracked, at times spindly vocals about despair and desolation of many kinds, sung over mysterious and moody music…” The title track “In the Flat Field” is one of my all-time favorite songs and this video of its live performance in ‘82 is worth watching over and over again.

Bauhaus “Bauhaus” Tone-Def Records, double album promo, released in 1990? Album 1, tracks 1-10, rejected studio mixes from Mask, 1981 and Album 2, tracks 11-20, March 1982, Milano, mostly tracks from In the Flat Field, Mask and Press The Eject and Give Me the Tape. The rejected studio mixes are quite great for rejects, but do lack a certain fullness and flavor of the legit Mask album (i.e. tracks like “Passion of Lovers,” “Of Lilies and Remains” and “Mask”). The sound quality of Album 2 is not great, like wearing earplugs at a show (so I guess maybe a realistic live experience). That said, the frenetic energy of “Flat Field” does poke its way through the mud and I can almost picture Peter Murphy’s manic dancing (in that same mud).

This unauthorized release is from a friend’s vault; he wanted to find out more about the album. Sadly I cannot find much more than I’ve already written above, though Album 2 mirrors closely the 1982 unofficial release Live in Milano At the “Odissea 2001″ on the German Geebo Geebo Records, so these songs are likely from the same live show.

Here is the tracklist as it appears on the back of the album rather than what is listed on the few websites I could find:

Muscle In Plastic
Passion Of Lovers
Hollow Hills
Dancing
Harry
Hair Of The Dog
Of Lilies And Remains
Unreleased
In Fear Of Dub
Mask

Double Dare
Flat Field
Silent Hedges
In Fear Of Fear
Lilies And Remains
Rose Garden Funeral
Three Shadows
Terror Couple
Stigmata Martyr

Dark Entries

The only full-length release from Tones on Tail, Daniel Ash’s and Kevin Haskins’ ‘side project’ nicely rounded out the space between Bauhaus and Love and Rockets by combining dark goth, industrial and doom-and-dance pop. It even gets jazzy at points, the walking bass line and brush snare in “Happiness” evoking a suited-stroll down dark club alleys in rainy London. “Go!” is industrial dance at its finest, a sound that remerged significantly on Love and Rocket’s later releases. “Christian Says” is begging for a darkly shrouded dance floor lit only with eery flashes of strobes giving glimpses of black-clad figures wildly flailing. And “Movement of Fear” could not be better titled: barren and sinister with the sad strains of a lone saxophone.

Bauhaus “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” 1979. Small Wonder Records. 12″ single b/w “Boys” and “Dark Entries (demo).” I had every intention of pulling this from the vault for this past weekend’s Halloween and Day of the Dead but the weekend’s festivities got in the way.

“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is the epitome of goth rock and many consider it the first true goth release. It’s 9+ minutes of pulse-like rhythm punctuated with haunting bass strums and eery guitar squeals, the words “dead” and “undead” appearing 48 times painted with visions of bats, dead flowers and red-velvet lined coffins.

The b-side track “Boys” is another one of my favorites by Bauhaus. Peter Murphy’s voice is gloriously pained and the music sparsely and desperately sad. The teaser “Dark Entries (demo)” hints at the glorious full recording to come in its 1980 release.

“Dark Entries” has a faster rocking tempo than most Bauhaus songs (so much so that it took me a few seconds to realize that I failed to switch the record player setting from 33-1/3 rpm to 45 rpm – it was only when the vocals started that I realized that Peter Murphy can sing low, but not that low), and has a very similar flavor to Bauhaus’ most excellent “In the Flat Field.” “Telegram Sam” is a cover by glam rockers T. Rex., lending Bauhaus a decidedly upbeat groove and garagey sound with sneer and swagger rather than the goth fathers’ usual gloomy distant minimalism.

4AD released the EP just months after Bauhaus disbanded in July 1983.
