R. L. Burnside “A Ass Pocket of Whiskey” – I had intended to write about this LP last week when it turned 30 years old (released February 6th 1996) and for Jon Spencer’s birthday (February 5 1965) but stuff came up. A Ass Pocket of Whiskey, released on Matador Records, is the great bluesman R.L. Burnside’s 7th studio LP on which he’s backed by Jon Spencer (guitar, lots of “YEAH!” backing vocals), Judah Bauer (on slightly more restrained “yeah” backing vocals, guitar, harmonica, keys) and Russell Simons on drums, plus non-JSBX Kenny Brown on (slide) guitar. I remember my mind being entirely blown by this record in the mid-90’s; JSBX was (and still is) one of my favorite bands and this collaboration was simply epic. “Snake Drive” remains one of my top blues (exploded) songs ever – I’m not positive but fairly certain it is Judah who screams “SNAKE DRIVE” at the end of the track. Absolutely killer guitar and rhythm driven blues. Other top picks include the opener “Goin’ Down South,” Burnside’s rendition of John Lee Hooker’s classic “Boogie Chillin,” the harmonica-forward “Shake ’em On Down” (written by Bukka White though he’s not credited on this album) and the narrative-driven “The Criminal Inside Me” (the lyrics of which include the LP’s title) which is the most JSBX track on the record (or the one that shows JSBX’s inspiration the most?) as at times it’s a dead ringer for JSBX’s classic “Blues X Man” (from 1994’s Orange) except when Jon asks RL for money (“40 nickels) for a bag of potato chips and RL responds that he’s going “kick your ass you sonofabitch.”

Cat Power “Redux” 2026. Domino Recording Co. a three song 10-inch EP by Chan Marshall aka Cat Power where she’s backed by her Dirty Delta Blues band which includes Judah Bauer (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) on guitar plus Gregg Foreman (The Delta 72, Jesse Malin), Erik Paparozzi (Lizard Music), and Jim White (Dirty Three, The Hard Quartet). The 10″ was released in celebration of the 20th anniversary of her 2006 album The Greatest. It includes one Cat Power original, the track “Could We” which was originally recorded but not included on The Greatest. The remaining two tracks are covers: James Brown’s bluesy “Try Me” – also originally recorded for The Greatest and scrapped – plus a hauntingly sad rendition of Prince/Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” According to a review on Under the Radar: “This inclusion is bittersweet as it was recorded in tribute to the late, great guitarist Teenie Hodges, a legendary member of The Memphis Rhythm Band that backed Cat Power on The Greatest and with whom she formed a close bond before his passing in 2014.” (undertheradarmag)

Various Artists “Root Damage: Rotten But Not Forgotten” 2003. Sympathy for the Record Industry. A comp of roots, blues, garage and rock music from the Sympathy label (a “serious excavation through the sympathy catalogue”) including R.L. Burnside, Soledad Brothers, Jack Oblivian, Compulsive Gamblers and (pre-famous) Beck. A double-LP with 28 tracks, it’s a time commitment but totally worth it. I’m familiar with a lot of it – a ton we already have on vinyl on the original albums, but there’s some new-to-me artists that make the comp a great listen.

The loved and familiar: R.L. Burnside’s “Georgia Woman” (1997, a 7″ single on SFTRI, also appears on Mr. Wizard, Fat Possum Records), another Fat Possum artist, Frank Roach with “Alabama,” Soledad Brothers “Shakey Puddin’” (2001, appears on Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit which was compiled by Jack White, who also sings backup on this track along with Dirtbombs drummer Ben Blackwell), and the two Jon Spencer collaborations: Spencer with Jeffrey Evans on Gibson Bros’ “Memphis Chicken” (1993) and Workdogs’ “Our Good Man” (1994).

New to me that I’m digging: “Sun Sinking Low” by Mr. Airplane Man, a female two-piece from Boston described as “a mishmash of deep love for Mississppi hill country blues, Memphis weirdo rocknroll, drony VU and Stooges, and Boston garage beat.” While I do know who Billy Childish is (he’s on this comp multiple times), this is my first time hearing, I think, The Blackhands’ “Black Girl” which is an accordion-soaked rendition of the Lead Belly classic, better known to our generation as “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” famously done by Nirvana on MTV Unplugged. Lo-fi high-speed blues punk w/harmonica “Harpoon Man” by Big Foot Chester is a burner.

Not a fan: Kirby Grips’ “Needless” (corny country), “Blackish Man” by Speedball Baby (corny blues) and Interstate Leisure Kings’ “Best Liquor Store” (formulaic country rock – the liner notes state it comes from the 1998 Shine On Sweet Starlet movie soundtrack – I can’t find any info about the film – and it’s the band’s only song but it seems to be a Jeff Smith (Hickoids) project).

And while it’s neither among my top picks nor particularly disliked, Beck’s “Leave Me on the Moon” is worth a mention. Part of the Kill The Moonlight soundtrack released in ’97 by SFTRI “captured before [Beck] sold millions of records and won the adoration of the world…at the time of this recording he was still living in a rat-infested tool shed in an alley in downtown Los Angeles and, as bands were setting up in clubs, he’d boldly jump on stage with his thrashed guitar to play his brand of infectious punk, blues and country songs.” (Root Damage liner notes)

Taj Mahal “Satisfied ‘n Tickled Too” 1976. Today, May 17th, is Taj Mahal’s 80th birthday (b. Henry St. Claire Fredericks Jr., 1942). Satisfied ‘n Tickled Too is Mahal’s 9th studio album; it’s a mix of blues, jazz, world music and R&B. Not my usual fare, but I have a big soft spot of Taj Mahal as he was my first brush with musician celebrity. In 1976 just a bit before my 5th birthday, my parents took me to the Mariposa Folk Festival in Toronto where he performed and then I met him on the ferry from the island back to the mainland in a torrential downpour (you can read more about that here). I remember absolutely zero of his performance (the chances that I napped during it are super-high) but I strongly suspect he played much of the material on this record.

Satisfied ‘n Tickled Too is OK. The strongest track is the title track “Satisfied ‘n Tickled Too,” a cover of Mississippi John Hurt. It’s got a bit of groove Mahal delivers it with a hefty dose of sly wit. “New E-Z Rider” has moments of good funk, as does “Easy to Love,” and the world beats/reggae rhythms of “Black Man Brown Man” are catchy. I’m less fond of the smooth jazz/R&B numbers like “Baby Love” (which goes on forevvvverrr) and the cover of Irving Taylor’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business” is kinda corny, as is “Old Time Song – Old Time Love” by Hoshal Wright.

Aretha Franklin “Lady Soul” 1968. Today, March 25th, would have been Aretha’s 80th birthday (b. 1942, d. 2018). Lady Soul was her 12th studio LP and it is considered one of the best albums of all-time. It went to #1 on the Soul Album chart, to #2 on the Pop Album chart and to #3 on the Jazz album chart in ’68 and had four Top 20 hits (two of those went to #1 on the R&B chart). Lady Soul boasts a huge and noteworthy backing band including Eric Clapton, Bobby Womack, King Curtis and Cissy Houston among many others. It is such a classic that to me it feels like a greatest hits record with some of my favorite Aretha songs: “Chain of Fools” (#2 US), “Money Won’t Change You” (originally by James Brown, 1966), “Since You’ve Been Gone” (#5 US), “Come Back Baby” (written by Walter Davis and made popular by Ray Charles) and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” (#8 US). Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, King recorded her own version of “A Natural Woman” for her 1971 Tapestry album. Mary J. Blige recorded it in ’95, scoring a place in the Top 100 and Celine Dion did her version in 1995 as well, going to #31 on the Adult Contemporary chart in the US and to #47 in Canada. Franklin’s version is hands-down the best of the bunch.

Workdogs “One Night Only!” 1995. In the Red Records. Heavy heavy punk blues, a “live in the studio” recording on August 9th and 11th, 1992 by Workdogs main members Rob Kennedy (bass, vocals) and Scott Jarvis (drums) who had a revolving door of guest musicians throughout the years. One Night Only! guests are none other than Jon Spencer (on guitar, theremin; Boss Hog, Pussy Galore and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and Jerry Teel (on guitar; Chrome Cranks, The Honeymoon Killers). The guest-star aspect of Workdogs was by design, humorously noted in the liner notes on One Night Only! “It is the principal that the Workdogs were built upon: every guest shall has his or chance to blow the ‘dogs into another dimension – each and every one of them bringing something special and unique to the stage – for one night only!…I never mention the perverse Workdogs’ penchant for pairing improbable sideman combos like slim trombone and lap steel guitar, or inviting ten musicians to participate in a karaoke cover band…I have had to take out restraining orders against more than one fanatical sideman to discourage their obsessive behavior. Fortunately this did not apply to the two sideman represented here. They understood instinctively that this was…one night only!” (Yves Bisquet*). Well, that’s not actually true as both Spencer and Teel recorded with Workdogs on Old (1995) as well as the single “Electric Mutt” (1992) and Spencer also performed on A Tribute to Sonny Boy Williamson (1994, 7″ featuring “Too Young To Die” and “Our Goodman“).

One Night Only! is raw and grainy, rough and lo-fi. My top track is the sole cover on the LP “Insane Asylum” originally by Willie Dixon. It is crazy, of course with the beats all over the place, weird starts, stops and yelps, and feels the most Jon Spencer exploding the blues. I also like “Unbroken” and “Roberta” which are both fairly epic in length and have a Stooges protopunk scuzzy strung-out dirge vibe, though “Roberta” eventually evolves into an all-out blues freak fest.

*I was curious to find out who Yves Bisquet was/is and found this interesting tidbit posted by Rob Kennedy on King Dog Biscuit Records’ Facebook page this past January:

The debut from “dive bar soul” musician Scales out of Chicago/Nashville, who has a serious blues pedigree (Scales is B.B. King’s nephew). I absolutely adore Phillip-Michael Scales! While my tastes definitely do not run towards singer/songwriters, I can get behind a sinner-songwriter like Scales who is beautiful, hilarious and a fantastic performer. Most recently we got to see him play a couple of weeks ago at Anodyne here in Milwaukee.

We first saw him perform at Appleton, WI’s Mile of Music in 2019 (Mutts, another group I adore, were his backup band) and then saw him play at Mile this past August on a gorgeously hot afternoon in the parking lot of Emmett’s (he didn’t have his vinyl record yet but I got a sweet t-shirt).

While I have no clue what he played back in 2019, I do know that in 2021 he played most of the tracks that appear on his latest release Sinner-Songwriter. A few of my top tracks from the shows and from the record are the album opener: the rocking “Feels Like Home,” the gorgeously soulful “O, Hallelujah,” a crowd stomping singalong (hilariously messed up at both 2021 shows by the audience…clearly we are all out of practice singing in public) “Send Me There” and the devastating “Tell Me How I Sound Again.” Before most of the songs, Scales shared either funny or heartfelt and authentic stories that gave deeper insight and meaning to the songs. While not on this record (all of his material is original), he concluded the Anodyne set with an acoustic stroll through the audience, singing “Stand By Me” – it was magical.

Wynonie Harris “Good Rockin’ Blues” 1970. King Records. I’m spinning this collection of early rockin’ rhythm and blues in honor of Harris, truly one of the founders of rock-n-roll, who would have been 105 years old today (b. August 24th, 1915, d. 1969). Harris is credited with being the inspiration for Elvis Presley’s style and vocal delivery but despite having several top 10 hits in the mid ‘40′s through early ‘50′s, as a Black man he never saw the mass recognition that Presley did for cementing the rock-n-roll genre into pop culture. Harris’ recording of Roy Brown’s “Good Rocking Tonight” in 1948 leads off this compilation: it went to #1 on the US R&B chart and Brown’s song written in ‘47 is arguably the first rock hit single (Elvis covered it in 1954 on Sun Records). Also included are his hits “I Feel that Old Age Coming On” (#10 R&B), “Grandma Plays the Numbers” (#7 R&B), “Bloodshot Eyes” (#6 R&B), “Good Morning Judge” (#6 R&B), “Lovin’ Machine” (#5 R&B) and a track whose sentiment still hasn’t gone away 70 years later “All She Wants to Do Is Rock” (#1 R&B).

Screamin’ Jay Hawkins “…What That Is!” 1969. This upcoming weekend would have been Hawkins’ 91st birthday (b. Jalacy Hawkins, July 18th, 1929 d. 2000) and since I just finished reading an excellent biography gifted me by one of its publishers at Feral House (I Put a Spell on You: The Bizarre Life of Screaming’ Jay Hawkins by Steve Bergsman, 2019) I decided to put this live LP on for a spin. It does not have his most famous song, “I Put a Spell on You” but it’s a great live comp (recorded at Club Amigo in North Hollywood) that does include his second-most famous and definitely most notorious song “Constipation Blues.” That track is hilarious, the horns making distinctly obvious plopping sounds throughout, and has Hawkins’ signature performance art delivery of the lyrics – grunting, groaning, hollering, screaming – to get some “relief.” In the book, the story behind this track is like much of Hawkins history and personality: lots of stories, most of which probably aren’t true but create a great and charming narrative. Supposedly he was in the hospital, constipated, and after trying for 5 hours got out the a roll of toilet paper and wrote the lyrics to the track then and there. That story shifted and shimmied quite a bit over the years so it’s hard to say what his real motivation was for the song, possibly just to piss off the more uptight members of some audiences.

The cover of …What That Is! shows Hawkins in a coffin, the prop he would start most of his live performances in since the 50′s. In I Put a Spell on You, Hawkins credits famed DJ Alan Freed with the original idea of emerging from the coffin on stage, but admitted Freed had to bribe him to do it; over time the bribe has been said to be anywhere between $300 and $5,000. (As mentioned above, Hawkins was highly entertaining and charming but an unreliable storyteller.) The liner notes on the back cover of …What That Is! also gives a glimpse into Hawkins’ sly sense of humor, though it does say it’s from the producer it feels like Hawkins’ voice. It says “This album was recorded live at the Club Amigo in North Hollywood on June 23rd and 24th, Nineteen Hundred and Yesterday, and is dedicated to President Nixon, whose efforts to recapture the era of the early 50′s do not pass unnoticed.” Like many, many, many Black artists, Hawkins was almost universally shafted out of most of his recording earnings and was frequently close to homelessness and extreme poverty during most of his professional life.

The Maness Brothers “Drive Me” and “Pain” 2020. Romanus Records, Lathe Love Series #3, very limited edition side-by-side custom clear vinyl single. The Maness Brothers, from St. Louis, just released their latest full LP this past weekend (also on Romanus Records), God Bless The Maness Brothers; I ordered my copy on sand-filled glow-in-the-dark vinyl. We’ve seen The Maness Brothers perform a bunch of times now and their hard-driving deep and dirty garage blues never ever disappoints. Both “Drive Me” and “Pain” are steeped in roots rock/blues with a super-gritty edge, good for both foot stompin’ and head banging. Both tracks appear on their new release which you can listen to in its entirety here.

Here’s a shot from the last time we saw them perform, in Indianapolis at Romanus Fest, August 2019.
