The Chrome Cranks “Dead Cool” 1995. Crypt Records. Dirty, noisy garage punk blues, Dead Cool is the Chrome Cranks second LP. Chrome Cranks’ lineup included two Jon Spencer collaborators: Jerry Teel on bass (Honeymoon Killers, The Work Dogs) and Bob Bert on drums (Pussy Galore and more recently Jon Spencer’s HITMakers); Dead Cool was Bert’s first recording with the Cranks. It’s an ass-shaker of an album: raw, nasty (in the best way), swampy, a bit bat-shit crazy and, yes, dead cool. My top track is the garage-rock ripper “Desperate Friend” which had me dancing at my desk, followed closely by “Down So Low” (for the bat-shit crazy). “Bloodshot Eye” has a killer bass line hook, creepy lo-fi vocals (Peter Aaron) and a solid, relentless beat. All track on Dead Cool are originals except for the final track, a cover of the 1966 Yardbirds “Lost Woman” which keeps the bass and adds more than a little raw punk edge to the 60’s blues rocker.

Not surprisingly there isn’t a ton of live video footage of the Cranks out there, but I did find a video from ’09 which includes “Desperate Friend” about 3 minutes in:

Chrome Cranks “Chrome Cranks” 1994. PCP Entertainment (Matador Records distribution). Noisy punk blues featuring former Jon Spencer collaborator Jerry Teel (Honeymoon Killers). Current(ish) and frequent(ish) Spencer collaborator Bob Bert (Pussy Galore, Jon Spencer & the Hitmakers, plus Sonic Youth) joined a year after Chrome Cranks release, in 1995 (the first gig of an earlier iteration of Chrome Cranks was as an opener for Pussy Galore.) There’s a good, brief bio of the band here (though hard to read) that lists the history and chronology of the band and its members. The s/t album was Chrome Cranks first full-length; it’s loud and lo-fi, rattly and rocking and, though formed in metropolis Cincinnati in ’88 and stationed in uber-urban NYC during the 90’s, it’s also infused with country blues strumming, some whooping and hollering (see “Driving Bad“) giving it a psychobilly bent – the spooky “Eight-Track Mind” would feel at home on a Cramps album. My top picks are the garagey opener “Dark Room,” the raucous punk’d out “Drag House,” the Hendrix-ish “Doll in a Dress,” plus the ass-shakers “Stuck in a Cave,” “Lo-End Buzz” and the vinyl-only closer “Party’s Over.”

Jon Spencer & the HITmakers “Spencer Gets It Lit” 2022. In the Red Recordings/Shove! Records/Bronzerat Records. Limited edition pink vinyl. We picked up Spencer’s latest LP at his show this past Friday at the Back Room Colectivo, even though I pre-ordered it a couple of months ago (still waiting for its delivery!). A fabulously funky and weird as hell record, with junkyard beats courtesy of the most excellent Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore) on trashcans and a gas tank, plus crazy space-age electronic sounds from keyboardist Sam Coomes (Quasi). M. Sord (Boss Hog) plays “regular” drums on Spencer Gets It Lit, though the HITmakers have the other half of Quasi, Janet Weiss, playing drums on their current tour (Quasi is also opening for Spencer).

We arrived pretty early to the show on Friday so I was able to get a good shot of Bob’s rig before the shitty Colectivo lights went on, as well as an ancient Fender Bassman amp from his and Spencer’s Pussy Galore days.

As is my style, I got a spot right at the stage for Spencer’s performance and took a few decent photos (after heavily editing the bad lighting, of course), plus scored Coomes’ copy of the setlist at the end of the night.

The HITmakers played several tracks from Spencer Gets It Lit including some of my top picks: the opener “Junk Man,” “Bruise” (I need to somehow work this into a yoga playlist as one of the main refrains is “inhale/exhale”), “Death Ray,” “Get It Right Now” and the super-sexy “Worm Town” (the name of the song=not so sexy). They also played a couple of songs from Spencer’s last release, Spencer Sings the Hits! like “Beetle Boots,” “Overlord,” “Cape” and “Do the Trash Can” (as one of the encores) plus the super-early Jon Spencer Blues Explosion song “Shirt Jac” (1992).

Sonic Youth “Evol” 1986. SST Records. Noisy no-wave, Evol is Sonic Youth’s third LP, their first with drummer Steve Shelley (replacing Bob Bert); it’s also notable for including bassist Mike Watt on the track “In the Kingdom #19,” his first recording after fellow Minutemen D. Boon’s death. (Watt also played on the Kim Fowley cover “Bubblegum” which is not on the vinyl version of Evol but is included on the CD). Sonic Youth also continued their collaboration with Lydia Lunch (who sang on their 1984/85 single “Death Valley ‘69″) – she co-wrote “Marilyn Moore.” (The cover of Evol is a still of actress Lung Leg from Submit to Me, Lung Leg also was in the video for “Death Valley ‘69″ – great song, great video). My favorite tracks on Evol are two tracks sung by Kim Gordon: “Shadow of a Doubt” and “Starpower,” which was the only single from Evol. I also appreciate the arty chaos sensibilities that carry over from the music to creating confusion for the listener: the tracks aren’t listed in order on either the back cover nor the lyric sheet, plus the last track “Expressway to Yr. Skull” is listed as “Madonna, Sean and Me” on the cover and as “The Crucifixion of Sean Penn” on the lyric sheet (and regardless of the title, has an infinity loop of chords in the runout groove). I’m not entirely sure what the obsession with Madonna and Penn was all about – the two married in ‘85 and divorced in ‘89 (with a lot of acrimony in between), but clearly there was some fascination. Around the same time as the recording of Evol, Sonic Youth and Mike Watt formed the side project Ciccone Youth, releasing the single “Into the Groove(y)” in ’86 and issuing the album The Whitey Album (1988, J. Mascis also contributed to that record).

Wolfmanhattan Project “Blue Gene Stew” 2019. In The Red Records. No wave garage-noise rock by the alt-super-group that includes Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Jon Spencer’s Hit Makers) on drums, Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs) on guitar and vocals, and Kid Congo Powers aka Brian Tristan (The Gun Club, Knoxville Girls) also on guitar and vocals. Lo-fi, swampy and often catchy as hell, Bob Bert smashes the shit out the rhythm section (his preferred drumsticks? Hammers!) and the guitars are garage-jangly mixed with hard power chords. Long-time Bert collaborator Lydia Lunch even makes a guest appearance on the track “Jar in the Staircase.” My top tracks include the garage-blues ass-shaker “Smells Like You” which Wolfmanhattan Project released as a single in 2015, and “Now Now Now” plus “Silver Sun” (both totally danceable, too). There’s some weird shit on the album as well, like the VERY no-wave track “Toynbee Tile Blues” which is long and filled with lots of crazy beat, spacey noise, distorted “vocals” (spoken word, mostly name-checking various cities, planets and Stanley Kubrick).

Last week I got a copy of Bob Bert’s kinda-autobiography I’m Just the Drummer, sent and signed to me by Bert himself. It’s a delightful read, a little bit about the man: his background, musical influences and collaborations, and art – one of his works is featured as Blue Gene Stew’s cover – but mostly it’s short interviews and photographs of the multitude of other artists he’s worked with over the years. Some of those interviews are pulled from Bert’s zine BB Gun from the early 2000′s.

Chrome Cranks “Love in Exile” 1996. Today, June 11th, is Bob Bert’s birthday (b. Robert Bertelli, 1955). Bert drummed for Chrome Cranks, as well as for Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Knoxville Girls, Jon Spencer and the HITMakers, among many others. Love in Exile was Chrome Cranks’ third and final studio album and also features former Honeymoon Killers’ bassist Jerry Teel along with Cranks founders William Weber and Peter Aaron. Much like Sonic Youth, Honeymoon Killers and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, it’s blues-punked noise rock, with a dash of psychobilly thrown in for a sound Allmusic labels “sleaze-rock.” There’s a deeply sinister cover of the old traditional tune “See That My Grave is Kept Clean” as well as some sparse – and also sinister – experimental tracks like “Movie Star” and “Curtains for My Baby.” Some of my favorites are the growling blues-exploded “We’re Going Down,” the blues-boogie punk of “Lost Time Blues,” as well as “Hot Blonde Cocktail,” a great screaming ass-shaker that weirdly got a decent amount of airplay on MTV in the mid-90′s.

I saw Bob Bert perform with Jon Spencer last summer, July 2018. His “drum kit” was a refabbed car engine atop a bass drum and hooked onto a trash can; he hit his kit mainly with hammers.

Sonic Youth “Death Valley 69″ 1985 EP, Homestead Records/Blast First Records. First released as a 7″ single in 1984 and then included on Sonic Youth’s second LP Bad Moon Rising (1985), “Death Valley 69″ features no-wave artist Lydia Lunch on vocals along with Thurston Moore on vocals and guitar, Kim Gordon on bass, Bob Bert – who is currently touring as part of Jon Spencer’s Hitmakers band – on drums, and Lee Ranaldo on guitar. It is a dark, loud, powerful post-punk noise rock masterpiece. This was the first song I ever heard by Sonic Youth; a friend of mine had this EP in ‘85 and I listened to her copy obsessively after making a tape (our vinyl copy is a relatively new acquisition). “Death Valley 69″ is about the Charles Manson murders of 1969 which puts its sinister vibe into serious context. The B-side of the EP has the tracks “I Dream I Dreamed” (a no-wave shoegazer), “Inhuman” (industrial-tinged noise rock), “Brother James” (driving dissonance in minor, creepy as hell yet weirdly catchy) and “Satan is Boring” (all no-wave, really really creepy chanting, no discernible melody or beat).

The Chrome Cranks “Love In Exile” 1996. PCP records. Chrome Cranks third and final studio LP. Dirty punk blues and a “deconstructive bastardization of garage rock,” the Cranks feature founding members Peter Aaron on vocals and guitar and William Weber on guitar as well as former Honeymoon Killers bassist Jerry Teel and Bob Bert, formerly of Sonic Youth and Pussy Galore, on drums.

Love in Exile is lo-fi and sleazy, sort of the sound you hear while in the nasty bathroom of the local dive bar at 1:30 a.m. (granted, it is a very hip dive bar). “Lost Time Blues” is a perfect example of this vibe: churning rhythm, shrieked and strained vocals with an undercurrent of real danger. “See That My Grave is Kept Clean” is a cover of one of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s tunes, recorded in 1927 on Paramount. The Cranks version is dirgey, a Cramps-esque creepy lament, traditional blues deconstructed and then rolled through an ashtray or two.

Well, there’s one kind of favor I’ll ask of you
Well, there’s one kind of favor I’ll ask of you
There’s just one kind of favor I’ll ask of you
You can see that my grave is kept clean

And there’s two white horses following me
And there’s two white horses following me
I got two white horses following me
Waiting on my burying ground

Did you ever hear that coffin’ sound
Have you ever heard that coffin’ sound
Did you ever hear that coffin’ sound
Means another poor boy is under ground

Did you ever hear them church bells tone
Have you ever hear’d them church bells tone
Did you ever hear them church bells tone
Means another poor boy is dead and gone

Well, my heart stopped beating and my hands turned cold
And, my heart stopped beating and my hands turned cold
Well, my heart stopped beating and my hands turned cold
Now I believe what the bible told

There’s just one last favor I’ll ask of you
And there’s one last favor I’ll ask of you
There’s just one last favor I’ll ask of you
See that my grave is kept clean
