Hot Garbage “Ride” 2021. Mothland Records. Heavy pyschedelia via Toronto, Canada: Hot Garbage opened for Frankie and the Witch Fingers last week and again, holy shit! So so good: swirling and hallucinogenic organ/synths (Dylan Gamble), icy cold vocals (Juliana Carlevaris), hot buzzy guitar (Alessandro Carlevaris) and nonstop hardworking rocksteady beats (Mark Henein). Comparing them to bands I love and listen to: a mash up of Ty Segall, The Limiñanas and Sonic Youth.

Since we picked up Ride after the show, I’m not entirely sure which tracks they played but I’m guessing the bulk of their performance included tracks from this, their latest release and first LP (I think its their debut anyway: according to their Bandcamp page they also have 2 EP’s). My favorite songs from Ride (and probably from their show) are “X-Ray,” “Everything Stops” (both heavy bass and beat-driven fuzzed out rockers), the slinky grooves of both “Soft as Gold” and “Fantasma” plus the hard tripping title track “Ride.”

Frankie and the Witch Fingers “Monsters Eating People Eating” 2020. Greenway Records. Psychedelic garage rock from Indiana via L.A. and holy shit! We caught Frankie and the Witch Fingers on Wednesday night at their sold-out show at Cactus Club and it was one of the wildest performances I’ve seen so far this year (and I’ve seen a lot!). They were non-stop: dynamic, electric, hypnotizing, sweat-drenched head-banging with barely time to breathe between songs. The packed-to-the rafters crowd was a sea of movement the whole show: shaking, dancing, head bopping (except for one woman right up at the stage who literally stood there the entire show with arms crossed, glaring and not moving – I just could not understand why she was there and having such a bad time).

They played several of my top tracks from Monsters Eating People Eating (though really the entire record is fantastic) including the loud-quiet-loud shredding, bass-grooving “Reaper,” the epically killer psychedelic rocker “Where’s Your Reality?” and the ass-shaking “Simulator.” The shredding and psychedelia was courtesy of Dylan Sizemore and Josh Menashe, the ass-shaking was courtesy of bassist Nikki Pickle (I finally realized why she looked so familiar – she’s in Death Valley Girls!) and new drummer Nick Aguilar who used to drum for Mike Watt.

The Blind Shake “Live in San Francisco” 2015, Castle Face Records. We caught The Blind Shake last night at the Cactus Club in Milwaukee and they played many of the songs from this performance in 2013, including one of my favorites “I’m Not an Animal.” Furious energy with sounds ranging from serpentine swampy to, what I somewhat drunkenly tapped out on my notes app during the show, the bastard child of Jimi Hendrix and Jack White on a cocktail of ‘shrooms and amphetamines. Garagey, punk noise and surf all mixed tempestuously together by the Blaha brothers out of Minneapolis.

Besides “I’m Not an Animal,” Live in San Francisco features another favorite of mine from their 2011 release Seriousness: “Hurracan,” as well as the title track, “Seriousness.” Also included are songs from the 2013 Key To a False Door: “Garbage on Glue” and “Porto Alegre;” “Wexford Scramble” from the 2007 album Carmel; and “Young Carnival Waste” from 2014′s Breakfast of Failures.

Opening for The Blind Shake were Milwaukee bands Devils Teeth (who wore all-white outfits in the mode of Captain Stubing from “The Love Boat” – complete with cap!) and Gallery Night. Gallery Night were especially killer: their drummer, Kelsey Kaufman, is outta control amazing. I found a clip of their performance opening for Thee Oh Sees – check it out!

Lyres “On Fyre” 1984. New Rose Records. Their first studio full-length release, all 60′s garagey, grungy guitar and pounding organs, tambourines! The Lyres played at the Cactus Club here in Milwaukee last night. I didn’t go (stayed home with the kiddo), but the husband did – and of course he’s still asleep so I cannot review the show from his perspective here. BUT – the album: awesome! Melodic and not overly nostalgic, forward-looking retro.

“Don’t Give It Up Now” leads off the album with a perfect 60′s vibe, Side 2 overtly gives reference to the greats of garage, the Kinks, with a cover “Tired of Waiting” “Also by the Kinks, Lyres’ “Love Me Till the Sun Shines” is probably the track that most feels like it truly belongs in the summer of love rather than the summer of Reagan.

Wishing I would have made it out last night to see the band but at least I have the vinyl to enjoy (and I’m sure someone will post a recording of the show on You Tube or whatever).

The Mistreaters “Grab Them Cakes” 2000. Big Neck Records. The first release from local Milwaukee power-grunge-punk-rock band. Very local: the guys still live in my neighborhood (hi Kevin and David!). Sooooo good and absolutely blistering live performances: we saw them play often at the Cactus Club – sadly I missed the show when the Mistreaters appeared with the White Stripes.

The Mistreaters went on to release “Playa Hated to the Fullest” in 2003 on Estrus Records and a self-titled album in 2012 on Dusty Medical Records (guitarist Kevin Meyer’s label) after playing their last show at the Cactus Club in December 2011.
