Convert “Unrestrained” Remix EP, 2023. Triple Eye Industries. Released this past weekend, on limited edition cassette and CD only. Milwaukee industrial-goth, post-punk and currently my favorite local band. We made it out to the release party show at Promises on Friday night and it was pretty epic, though no one saw much because of the intensity of the smoke machine. This literally is the best picture we took (and I’ve applied filters so you can at least kind of see Dillon singing). Funniest part of the evening: the young guy with the dreads you can see in the photo below at one point tried to start a mosh pit. Some of the young women in the crowd freaked and scurried out of the way to near where we were standing by the wall. Joe lightly grabbed the guy by the shoulder and told him to “Settle down!” I laughed so hard because it was such an old-man moment: get off my lawn!

Anyway, Unrestrained is a collection of six remixed tracks from their 2022 LP Saves and it’s amazing. I think I actually like the remixes even better than the originals. Super extra dark, with the industrial sound amped into EBM territory. Think early (good) Ministry, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb meets The Cure, Bauhaus and Siouxsie. I 100% would have been dancing to these tracks on industrial night in the 80’s. “Watch It Burn (Blood Remix)” and “Bleached Bones (Vic Dagger Remix)” are ass-shaking amazing. I also love the swirly dream-synth accent on “Nightbursts (TransAmvania Remix)” and “Death Mask (Cellmate Remix)” is terrifying — in a good way. I also must give a shoutout to the sludgy track “Cold Motive (Guerrilla Ghost Remix)” mostly because I know one of the Guerrilla Ghost guys. You can get your own copy here.

Nuisance “Kuchisabishii” 2022. Katuktu Collective. Ambient and highly experimental dream pop, 50% Milwaukee. Nuisance is a wildly creative project hatched out of pandemic necessity: collaborators BJ Seidel (the Milwaukee half) and Ryan Weber (now in California) – both were/are in the late 90’s Milwaukee indie pop band Camden – made the album together but apart, each writing and recording their portions under a strict 48 timeframe in their respective homes. Ryan has developed a unique virtual instrument library, Poetic Devices, comprised of sounds like “Monarch Mandolin” and “Emotional Ukulele,” and composed the album using only those devices, its theme “a painting of fruit, so all the songs became about the lifespan of a piece of fruit, from the seed dropping from the tree until it became something edible or fermented into a bottle of wine.” (Seidel, 88.9 interview) He then sent the music to BJ to add lyrics and voice, with the instructions “to open up a track and start recording to it without listening to any of the other tracks.”

I only knew a bit of that backstory before listening to Kuchisabishii but I was immediately struck by the visual nature of the music: it truly paints a delicate soundscape, like an impressionistic painting in soft sunlit pastels. “Primordial” in particular immediately conjured up the image of cherry blossoms falling in slow-motion at the end of romantic arthouse cinematic drama. I’m a rock-n-roll girl who grew up playing classical violin so one of my favorite tracks is “Bacchanal,” one of the few songs on Kuchisabishii with a solid drumming rhythm but also a lovely and soaring violin accenting the melody. I also really like “Usufruct” (the second single from the album) which has Beach Boy-meets-choir boy pop harmonies, and the last track, “Repletion,” which is reminiscent of a classical music requiem at its start that crescendos into a soaring, densely anthemic conclusion. Overall, Kuchisabishii has a sweet atmosphere of emotion that just barely skims the edge of sadness: goth but goth if painted by Monet or Cassatt.

Dark Psychic “Hallucination” 2021. The debut from this Milwaukee dark synthpop band is my most listened to local album of ’21. Self-released on cassette (and now I think also available on CD), this release hit exactly the right spot for me in the late spring/early summer last year as we emerged from the worst winter ever, hunkered down in semi-lockdown and societal chaos, still feeling the bleakness but with bright hope of a season of fun (which was, as we know, cut abruptly short). From their website: “Hallucination tells the tale of disillusioned millennials and gen-xers navigating adult life in an economic and political wasteland, in the midst of multiple systemic crises. The title refers to the state of mental fatigue one experiences day-to-day while living in a country that is rapidly spiraling out of control. When each new day is more unbelievable than the last, we begin to question reality, which may explain the popularity of conspiracy theories. The album was largely written and recorded during the pandemic, and while there is a dark, cynical nature to much of it, many songs contain at least some glimmer of hope, with the ultimate theme being togetherness and solidarity.” Heavily inspired by some of my personal favorite 80’s bands: Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure, etc., Dark Psychic combines synth and vocals (Clark Rendall) and guitar (Nathan Greene) into a gothy and haunting hypnotic groove that is instantly addictive.

The first time I heard the lead single, “Burn,” I was hooked and had it on repeat for weeks, adding it to several of my playlists. The rest of the album is fantastic, too. Other top picks include the first track “IDK,” the 80’s plink-plunk, bleep-bloop Speak and Spell-ish of “Wake Up,” the menacing Black Celebration-ish “Wolf at the Door,” the title track “Hallucination” and the guitar-forward “Living in America.”

We had the good fortune of seeing Dark Psychic’s first ever show at Puddler’s Hall in early July (it was the second show we had seen since March 2020, making it extra-memorable). Two days later I met up with a good friend for some light afternoon day-drinking at Blackbird Bar and realized the bartender looked extremely familiar: turns out it was guitarist Nathan Greene so I got to gush to him in person how much I enjoyed Hallucination and their show. We also caught them on the patio of Boone & Crockett in August: while Dark Psychic’s sound generally feels more shadowy late-night, its edges of shimmer worked to highlight that gloriously beautiful sunny afternoon.

Rexxx “Pure Pleasure II” 2020. Party punk power pop from one of my favorite Milwaukee “super-groups.” Self-released on cassette, though now available on vinyl from Big Neck Records (which we might have but I’m focusing on local cassette releases this week). Any Milwaukee band that includes Sam Reitman (Slow Walker, Surgeons In Heat, Ramma Lamma, many others) in its lineup will automatically catch my attention so Rexxx has been on our radar since they formed a couple of years ago. Also in Rexxx are Zach Otto and Harrison Colby (Sex Scenes) and Jesse Buskov (King Eye & The Squirts, another local favorite). It’s super-fun on the edge of bubblegum, high energy rock and an absolute blast live. We saw them sometime in 2019 and/or the record release in early 2020 (it’s blurry) and, more recently, this past August at the WMSE Backyard BBQ (which is almost quite literally in our own backyard). Here’s a couple of photos from that show.

Pure Pleasure II – misleading a bit because it’s their first album – is a short ‘n sweet burst of, yes, pure pleasure. A crowd favorite, and one of mine, is the first track “Can’t Help It” which reminds me a lot of old-school power poppers Buzzcocks’ “What Do I Get?” but with a bit more growl. Also great are “Lost Cause” (such great harmonies and Sam’s bassline melody riff), the excellently named “Fuccboii,” the crashing “Rock n Roll” and the power pop ripper “Animal.”

Static Eyes “Traps” 2017. Triple Eye Industries. Local Milwaukee trashy, thrashy garage punk. I’ve collected a tidy pile of local music over the last little bit, mostly on cassette (vinyl production issues, you know the deal) so this week I’m focusing exclusively on Milwaukee bands currently, or at least very recently, active. Static Eyes is 3/4 of one of my favorite MKE bands, Fox Face; both bands include Chopper (on drums in Static Eyes, on guitar in Fox Face), Lindsay (on bass, some vocals: Static Eyes, guitar and vocals: Fox Face) and Lydia (drums: Static Eyes, guitar and vocals: Fox Face). Lee provides howling, growling vocals and some crazy-ass dancing for Static Eyes — it’s been a few years since they’ve played out (I think) but their shows were dynamic, loud and nuts. I think the last time we saw them was maybe in 2017 at Burnhearts Pabst Street Fest.

“Traps” is a quick and brutal six-song EP, no filler. My top track is “Dahmer Faced Dog” which is both wicked and hilarious; I believe the story behind it is that Lee was at a yoga class and misheard, in the most Milwaukee way ever, the pose Downward Facing Dog as Dahmer-Facing Dog. It has a killer (pun intended) hook and is a total ass-shaker. The title track “Traps” is dark, menacing and more than a little creepy. My other top pick, “Close Talker,” has a sentiment pandemic-me can totally relate to: “Don’t stand so fucking close…get outta my face!”

Nitzer Ebb “That Total Age” 1987. Not on vinyl, but on ALL the other formats: I bought the cassette in ‘87 (and listened to it incessantly that year), picked up the CD sometime in the 90′s or early 2000′s, and am currently streaming it on Spotify (my tape player will probably munch the cassette and I don’t have a CD player readily accessible). Last night we got to see Nitzer Ebb play at Turner Hall here in Milwaukee – it was insane!! I danced non-stop for almost 2 hours (logging in over 10,000 steps and 2 cardio workouts on my FitBit 😅). The last time I saw them was over 30 years ago, in the summer of ‘90 when they toured with Depeche Mode – the bands are/were good friends and continued to work together on tours and recording for years after. Nitzer Ebb’s Bon Harris and Douglas McCarthy look older; I suppose I do, too.

Relentlessly pounding EBM/industrial dance, That Total Age was Nitzer Ebb’s debut album. The single “Join in the Chant” hit #9 on the US dance charts and the crowd went insane last night when they performed it.

Join in the Chant

Join in the Chant (2)

They also played “Murderous” and “Let Your Body Learn” (two of my favorites and both also released as singles ), plus a hilarious ballad version of “Violent Playground” and “Alarm” as part of the encore. While not on That Total Age, Nitzer Ebb also played “Hearts and Minds” (we have that 12″ single on vinyl). Another top pick from the album is the opener “Fitness to Purpose.” My original cassette has the track “Warsaw Ghetto” which was not included on the originally released CD’s (mine doesn’t have it) but that track does appear on the 2018 reissue.

Billy Idol “Don’t Stop” 1981. A cassette post today for a few reasons: the inventor of the cassette tape, Lou Ottens, died this past weekend at age 94 and today, March 10th, is Ritchie Cordell’s birthday – he was one of the writers of “Mony Mony,” a hit for Tommy James and the Shondells in 1968. Billy Idol’s 1981 version of “Mony Mony” on this cassette EP first went to #7 on the US Dance chart but then his live version went to #1 in 1987 (knocking Tiffany’s cover of another Cordell-penned/produced songs, “I Think We’re Alone Now” from the top spot that week). I didn’t purchase many cassettes, though I have a ton of dubbed Maxell tapes, but for whatever reason I bought this one back in the mid-80′s. Besides “Mony Mony,” it has Generation X’s “Dancing With Myself” (Idol did not re-record it for the EP, the producers simply edited down the original Gen X version). It has another Gen X song that Idol did re-record: “Untouchables” that originally appeared on the 1980 album Kiss Me Deadly plus the song “Baby Talk.” Side B is an interview with Billy Idol and Martha Quinn from MTV and I honestly don’t remember ever listening to it and can’t confirm that by actually playing this tape right now because, true to form, my cassette player immediately began to chew it up.

Abby Jeanne “Get You High” and “Spellbound” 2019. Hi Fi Records. Very limited edition 7″ colored vinyl and even more limited cassette release. This past weekend Milwaukee’s own Abby Jeanne hosted a “Pop-Up Atomic Records” shop at the Bay View coffee shop, Hi Fi Cafe for her just-released single, “Get You High,” a dreamy track filled with swirls and tension. Side B is a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshee’s “Spellbound,” which Jeanne recreates beautifully, respectfully: not many singers can match Siouxsie Sioux’s piercingly clear vocals but wow, Abby does an amazing job, adding her bluesy touch to the goth classic. The cassette has both of those tracks plus a bonus track – “Get You High (Daniel Ash ‘Paradise Mix’)” – remixed by the Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love and Rockets/Pop Tone goth master himself.

The Stone Roses “The Stone Roses” released 30 years ago today, May 2nd, 1989. I forgot I had a copy of the Stone Roses’ breakout debut album! (It’s been buried in a drawer of cassettes that hasn’t seen the light of day since the mid-90′s.) Jangly neo-psychedelic Brit pop, The Stone Roses was a slow-burning hit that eventually thrust them, and the “new” Manchester scene onto the international scene (albeit briefly, The Stone Roses disbanded in ‘96, though did reunite for a tour in 2012). One of my favorite tracks is “Waterfall” which the Roses released as one of several singles from the album; it went to #27 in the UK. They also released “Elephant Stone” (this track did not appear on the original UK The Stone Roses but is on my US cassette version), “Made of Stone,” “She Bangs the Drums” (which went to #34 in the UK), “I Wanna Be Adored” (released as a single in the US in 1990 where it went to #18 on the Modern Rock chart) and “I Am the Resurrection” which wasn’t released until 1992 in the UK where it went to #33. That final single has been called one of “The 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever” (NME) and one of the Greatest Guitar Tracks (Q).

Allmusic says about The Stone Roses: “What made the Stone Roses important was how they welcomed dance and pop together, treating them as if they were the same beast. Equally important was the Roses’ cool, detached arrogance, which was personified by Ian Brown’s nonchalant vocals. Brown’s effortless malevolence is brought to life with songs that equal both his sentiments and his voice – “I Wanna Be Adored,” with its creeping bassline and waves of cool guitar hooks, doesn’t demand adoration, it just expects it. Similarly, Brown can claim “I Am the Resurrection” and lie back, as if there were no room for debate. But the key to The Stone Roses is John Squire’s layers of simple, exceedingly catchy hooks and how the rhythm section of Reni and Mani always imply dance rhythms without overtly going into the disco. On “She Bangs the Drums” and “Elephant Stone,” the hooks wind into the rhythm inseparably – the ‘60s hooks and the rolling beats manage to convey the colorful, neo-psychedelic world of acid house. Squire’s riffs are bright and catchy, recalling the British Invasion while suggesting the future with their phased, echoey effects. The Stone Roses was a two-fold revolution – it brought dance music to an audience that was previously obsessed with droning guitars, while it revived the concept of classic pop songwriting, and the repercussions of its achievement could be heard throughout the ’90s, even if the Stone Roses could never achieve this level of achievement again.”

Depeche Mode “Music For the Masses” released 30 years ago on this date, September 28th, in 1987. Up until recently, I only had this album on cassette because in September ‘87 I didn’t own a CD player and my teenage brain believed vinyl was anachronic. Inevitably my off-brand Walkman munched up part of the tape, pictured here and still stopped at the 1987 munch-point.

I still really really love Music For the Masses. It is moody, introspective, spacious yet still danceable. The single “Strangelove” was released months before the album, in April ‘87, hitting #16 in the UK and a more uptempo version (“Strangelove ‘88″) made it to #50 in the US. I was, and still am, enamored with “Never Let Me Down Again,” which was released as a single in August ‘87, hitting #63 in the US and #22 in the UK. It is dramatic and atmospheric, with odd emphases and lyrical punctuations (”We’re flying high/We’re watching the world pass us by/Never want to come down/Never want to put my feet back down on the ground”). “Nothing” is another favorite, full of darkness and nihilism, and the stark desperation of “I Want You Now” is heart-wrenching. “Little 15″ pretty much freaked me out – the dense and creepy funhouse synths, the menacing lyrics – and it still does.
