The Beta Band “The Beta Band” 1999. The debut LP from Scottish experimental alt-poppers. The album came on the heels of a couple of very successful EP’s and “was at least partly recorded in a small hut belonging to [John] Maclean’s grandfather in a remote northwest part of Scotland [so they could record sound of the ocean], where the group found themselves with no room to sleep as they filled the hut with an excessive amount of musical equipment and homemade instruments.” The rest was recorded at a few other locations, intentionally lending a haphazard vibe to the record. While it did go to #18 in the UK, the band (specifically vocalist Steve Mason) called it “fucking awful…half-written songs with jams in the middle.” It’s been described by critics as a “brashly schizophrenic freak-out” that ignores conventional songwriting completely in favor of chaos. Lots of sampling, fun-house sounding toy instruments (specifically on “Round the Bend” which has a xylophone, spoons, bird whistle and I think a cuckoo clock), some ill-advised rapping (“The Beta Band Rap“) and some funky disco (with slightly better rapping) on what I think is the best track “Dance O’er the Border.” That song is also the least-representative – it is an alt-dance song that reminds of Yard Act. There’s a fair amount of ambient Floyd-scapes, too – I do like “Brokenupadingdong” which gives me Meddle and Animals feels, at least until the steel drums kick in. Also of note is “The Hard One” which almost landed the band in legal trouble as it is sort of a (uncredited) cover of Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” – rearranging the chorus’ lyrics and sampling the piano riff from the original, though I’m hard-pressed to hear much overlap between the two songs.

Sonic Youth “Dirty” 1992. Grungy and experimental noise rock, produced by Butch Vig. This 2-disc LP is a remastered reissue; I originally bought Dirty on CD in ’92 while in college (it reminds of me of Christmastime so I’m guessing it was procured with some extra xmas money at B-Side Records on State Street). Dirty was Sonic Youth’s seventh album and one of their most successful releases. It hit #83 on the US charts and went all the way to #6 in the UK. Entertainment Weekly named it the best album of ’92 (I guess EW was cooler back then).

I love this whole album and it’s completely wrapped up with the sensory memories of my shitty Madison apartment, blasting this on my JVC cd boombox while getting ready to go out to bars since I was finally legal. My top songs include the four singles Sonic Youth released from Dirty: “100%” (#4 on the US alternative chart, #28 UK) about the murder of their roadie Joseph Cole in ’91; the video was directed by Tamra Davis and Spike Jonze and features Jason Lee skateboarding, pre-acting days; “Youth Against Fascism” (#52 UK) which features Minor Threat/Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye on guitar and the still-resonant lyric “I believe Anita Hill; “Sugar Kane” (#26 UK) – its video is the first screen appearance by Chloe Sevigny; and “Drunken Butterfly” – I don’t know if it charted but the video was a result of a 120 Minutes contest and the song’s lyrics are composed entirely from Heart song names and lyrics. I also like the punk grrrl growl of “Orange Rolls, Angel’s Spit,” the super-short, super-punk’d Untouchables cover “Nic Fit,” and “Purr” which has a late 80’s grungy Seattle feel in the vocals and guitar. The track “Stalker” is not on the CD version, it was added in 2003 when the record was released on vinyl in the US.

Public Image Ltd “The Flowers of Romance” 1981. PiL’s third LP today to commemorate guitarist Keith Levene’s death last week on November 11th. The Flowers of Romance was the last record Levene recorded with PiL; he co-wrote all of the songs, plays guitar plus contributed to most of the percussion (and there’s A LOT of percussion beyond drums), bass (Jah Wobble had departed PiL by then), synth and cello. The album’s title refers to Levene’s early punk band (Sid Vicious was a member); it went to #11 in the UK.

The Flowers of Romance is highly experimental post punk, prog-punk with extended and hypnotic drum solos, weird and exotic instrumentation and innovate sampling and looping techniques. Levene said about the record that it is “the least commercial record ever delivered to a record company.” It is definitely not ass-shaking, nor head-banging. But it’s really interesting. The title track, the “hit single” “Flowers of Romance” went to #24 on the UK singles chart, though it’s a different version than on the album, and was described in 2002 as “the strangest chart record of the last 25 years, maybe ever.” I love the deep industrial groove of “Banging the Door” (about John Lydon’s irritation of fans banging on his London home’s door at all hours of the night). “Four Enclosed Walls,” the lead track, has a crazy mix of sounds, including a “Mickey Mouse pocket watch [which was] placed on a floor tom so it would resonate and have more tone.” And “Go Back” is angular and sparse, with a sort-of Lydon rap about the repressive political climate of early 80’s England.

Quasi “Featuring Birds” 1998. Up Records. Limited edition colored vinyl (repress). Indie/experimental rock from Portland, Featuring Birds is Quasi’s third studio LP. We saw the duo open for Jon Spencer & the HITmakers this past April. Quasi are Sam Coones on keyboards, guitar and vocals and Janet Weiss on drums and vocals. Weiss is probably best known for her work with Sleater-Kinney from ’97 through 2019; she has also played with Bright Eyes, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, The Shins and the Sleater-Kinney side-project Wild Flag. Coones was in The Donner Party in the 80’s and also played bass for Heatmiser.

Featuring Birds is fairly mellow with lovely melodies backed by some buzzy guitar and sometimes wild keyboards. My top tracks are “I Never Want to See You Again,” the rocking and dissonant “Ape Self Prevails In Me Still,” the 60’s organ-forward garage rocker “I Give Up,” and the only Weiss-lead vocal’d “Tomorrow You’ll Hide.” A lot of the record is a little too indie-twee for my tastes (the ukulele-styled guitar ditty “Please Do” for instance, and “You Fucked Yourself” which, despite the title, is a jazzy piano little number). April isn’t that long ago but I feel like they played a much more dynamic show than Featuring Birds would indicate for their style.

Hooveriii “Water for the Frogs” 2021. Reverberation Appreciation Society, clear blue vinyl. Spacey psychedelic modern prog-rock. The vinyl looks weird in this photo because the shrink wrap is still on the jacket in order to save the sticker (there’s no other identifier on the jacket except the spine otherwise). I’m pretty sure Joe caught these guys – and bought this album – a couple of times about a month ago, once at Cactus Club and then again the following night at Promises. I didn’t go because I was tired that week, having just seen Jack White perform and also I was saving my energy to see Duran Duran on the weekend (worth it!). According to the handy setlist.fm website, Hooveriii (pronounced Hoover Three) played several of the tracks on Water for the Frogs (their second album) at the Cactus show: the opener “Cindy,” my top track “Control” (psychedelic garage rock and totally ass-shaking), “Hang Em’ High” and as their final encore, a super-trippy and mellow cover of Lou Reed’s “Shooting Star” (video of that encore at Cactus below). Other notable tracks are the bendy guitar meets 1970’s spaceage-style bleep-bloop keyboards instrumental “We’re Both Lawyers” that descends into cosmic chaos and the hypnotic rocker “Erasure.” Hopefully the next time Hooveriii comes through town it will be during a week when I don’t already have multiple shows on the calendar.

Their music is buzzy, eclectic, experimental, a bit psychedelic and Americana gothic; their Bandcamp bio describes them as “The Cramps from the crypt met up with the Ramones and take all the cocaine Hasil Adkins left on the floor.” Their most recent release, Never Die, has the vibe of a Grimm fairy tale set in a dim Texas saloon filled with smoke and taxidermy. There’s some truly creepy tracks like “Never Die” and “Devil’s Vine” – Carly’s voice floats like a ghost over Nosferatu organ and their cover of Patti Smith‘s “Ghost Dance” is a perfect fit for the record. There’s also a couple of psychedelic garage rockers (and not surprisingly these are my favorite on the LP): “Wild One” and “Pieces of 8.”

The Lost Sounds “Memphis is Dead” 2001. Big Neck Records on smoky vinyl (2018 repress I believe). Experimental, dark garagey noise rock with elements of punk, surf and psychedelia. The Lost Sounds were Jay Reatard (aka Jay Lindsey who died in 2010, from the Reatards), Rick Crook (also from Reatards, Sweet Knives) and Alicja Trout (Sweet Knives, River City Tanlines). We saw Trout perform with River City Tanlines last month at Dirtnap Records Fest where she and her band blew us away; we got this record from her then (the River City Tanlines LP is long out of print). Memphis is Dead is super-witchy (see their reworking of The Lollipop Shoppe‘s 60’s psychedelic “You Must Be a Witch” if there’s any doubt) and weird with creepy keyboards, wailing vocals (courtesy of Trout) and a lot of raw noise. It’s great! “It’s My Dream” is a total nightmare, “Disease” is an all-out angry punk rager and “Don’t Bother Me” is both evil and totally danceable. “Inside My Head” and “I’ve Lost It” are the most accessible songs on the record, both are quick 60’s-style organ-forward garage boppers sung by Jay Reatard and provide a tiny bit of musical levity to an overall super-dark album.

While the title track “Memphis is Dead” does not actually appear on the record – it appeared on the EP 1+1=Nothing (Empty Records, 2000) – it’s one of the only videos of the band from that time available.

Sleigh Bells “Texis” 2021. Torn Clean Records/Mom+Pop Music, on clear vinyl. Noisy experimental pop, Texis is duo Alexis Krauss’ and Derek Miller’s fifth album (the hype sticker on this record’s plastic sleeve weirdly says it’s their 6th record but literally every reputable website says it’s their 5th). I’ve been a Sleigh Bells fan since their first LP Treats (2010), blown away by their combination of a dense wall of hard electronica and killer beats that are overlaid with Krauss’ soaring and gorgeously angelic voice. I also really liked Reign of Terror (2012) and Bitter Rivals (2013) but while I enjoyed Jessica Rabbit OK I don’t think I’ve listened to it since 2016 when it came out. Texis, however, brings back some of the earlier excitement from their older releases. An Allmusic review describes their sound as “cheerleader metal” which is pretty perfect: sweet, poppy and infectious but also gritty, loud and dangerous. My top tracks from Texis are the lead track “Sweet 75,” “Locust Laced” (about which an NME review describes as “a crazed mash of go-go pop, torture-porn thrash metal and dubstep”), “Tennessee Tips” (“a barrage of ray gun synth-punk,” NME), “Red Flag Flies” and the album closer “Hummingbird Bomb” which is weird and excellent: light and fluttery with layers upon layers of intense/insane synth-rock explosions.

New wavey synth-punk, hypnotic and experimental, “Dream Baby Dream” ranks high as one of the best singles of the new wave/post-punk era by folks who rate such things (ie Pitchfork, Q). Ric Ocasek produced the single and several big-name acts have covered it, most prominent was Bruce Springsteen who included it on his 2014 LP High Hopes. The 12″ single has the “Long Version” which basically is just a lot longer than the single version that appears on Side B along with the scaccoto’d, electro-weird “Radiation.” Alan Vega’s lyrics are minimal and more spoken than sung over Martin Rev’s plink plunk keyboards. The duo never achieved real commercial success – they were a bit too art-rock and riotously confrontational live – but were massively influential on the synthpop scene of the 80’s and the industrial dance groove in the 90’s.

Pussy Galore “Feel Good About Your Body” released on or around this day, December 21st, 1985. Today is also the anniversary of Pussy Galore’s first show ever, at the University of Maryland (that info most excellently provided by Pop-Catastrophe). Feel Good About Your Body is a 4-song EP on Shove Records, Pussy Galore’s own label, and Adult Contemporary Recordings, another DC-based micro-label that only put a handful of releases from ’84- present including another Pussy Galore single and a few albums by Peach of Immortality (like Pussy Galore, a noise-rock band). As one would expect, the songs are noisy with lots of distortion and off-kilter rhythms. “Die Bitch” has buzz-sawed guitar and “drums” that are more like hammers pounding on metal (Bob Bert wasn’t in the band yet but clearly was destined to join based on Pussy Galore’s rhythm section aesthetic). “HC Rebellion” has Julia Cafritz taking spoken-word lead vocals (read from letters in the Maximum Rock ‘n Roll zine) over a droning raga-styled guitar hook and then layers and layers are added into the cacophony. Jon Spencer and Cafritz share vocals – more like shouts and screams – on “Constant Pain” (the only lyrics are “constant pain”) and “Car Fantasy” is all atonal, feedback and off-key droning.

Pussy Galore recorded the EP at the Laundry Room in October 1985 with Barrett Jones for $150 (the Laundry Room was his house that doubled as a recording studio). In an article on The Stranger website in 2002 Barrett said the recording process was hellish:

“First, Spencer was never happy with the takes. “He’d say, ‘That sounds too good–make it sound worse,’” Jones remembers. Then there was Julia Cafritz, the other singer at the time. She bragged about smoking three packs of cigarettes a day, and filled the house with a dense cloud of smoke. And Pussy Galore loved noise–loud, obnoxious noise. “God, I hated them for that,” admits Jones.
