Edgar Winter “Frankenstein” 1973. I’m really stretching the criteria for a Halloween-themed song today – there’s nothing particularly scary about this #1 single from the early 70′s (except maybe how much classic rock stations overplay it); the proggy instrumental rock track earned its name from the multiple edits on recording tape, cut and pieced together with razor blades and splicing tape. It was originally the b-side to “Hangin’ Around” but this reversed quickly when radio stations preferred playing “Frankenstein.” This copy’s b-side is Edgar Winter’s other major hit “Free Ride,” also from ‘73, which hit #14 on the US charts. Memory Lane is a series of single reissues produced by Epic Records, itself a subsidiary of CBS, now owned by Sony.
