The Chrome Cranks “Dead Cool” 1995. Crypt Records. Dirty, noisy garage punk blues, Dead Cool is the Chrome Cranks second LP. Chrome Cranks’ lineup included two Jon Spencer collaborators: Jerry Teel on bass (Honeymoon Killers, The Work Dogs) and Bob Bert on drums (Pussy Galore and more recently Jon Spencer’s HITMakers); Dead Cool was Bert’s first recording with the Cranks. It’s an ass-shaker of an album: raw, nasty (in the best way), swampy, a bit bat-shit crazy and, yes, dead cool. My top track is the garage-rock ripper “Desperate Friend” which had me dancing at my desk, followed closely by “Down So Low” (for the bat-shit crazy). “Bloodshot Eye” has a killer bass line hook, creepy lo-fi vocals (Peter Aaron) and a solid, relentless beat. All track on Dead Cool are originals except for the final track, a cover of the 1966 Yardbirds “Lost Woman” which keeps the bass and adds more than a little raw punk edge to the 60’s blues rocker.

Not surprisingly there isn’t a ton of live video footage of the Cranks out there, but I did find a video from ’09 which includes “Desperate Friend” about 3 minutes in:

Today, December 10th, is Meg White’s 50th birthday (b. 1974) Live in Las Vegas is a monster of Vault package: 3 LP’s on red, white and black vinyl. Also included are a patch, two Vegas-style art print playing cards by Rob Jones, a bumper sticker and a 7″ single featuring “Ball and Biscuit” – Side A is Jack White and Bob Dylan performing the song on March 17th 2004 at the State Theater in Detroit and Side B is the White Stripes’ first performance of the track on May 2, 2002 at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London.

Quoting widely from the box set insert about Live in Las Vegas backstory:

In the midst of the run of shows in September 2003, a promotional idea was cooked up by the team at V2 Records – 40 or so fans would be flown out to the White Stripes show at the Joint (at the Hard Rock Casino) in Las Vegas, get a meet-and-greet with the band, and then some time afterward be presented with a vinyl pressing of that evening’s show.

The original pressing is sparse to say the least. With no printed artwork, tracklisting or even credits “The White Stripes Live In Las Vegas” rubber-stamped on the labels is the only true identifier on this record. A dip through the original paperwork shows only 100 copies were ever pressed, all at United Record Pressing in Nashville.

Consider this snapshot of the night…Josh Hartnett, Steve Mcdonald, Darryl Hannah, Scott Caan and Josh Klinghoffer were all there, not necessarily together or gambling. Soledad Brothers and Whirlwind Heat tore it up as the opening bands, and the Stripes’ set itself was spectacular. The unpredictable moments electrify…an off-the-cuff take of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” to a mid-set abandonment of “Offend In Every Way” because of its reliance upon the D minor chord [ed: relevant because two months prior Jack White was in an accident that injured his hand and he was at that time unable to play D minor chords] and an opportune tease of “Mary Had A Little Lamb” imbue the evening with spontaneous joy. Songs from Elephant had taken shape as muscled, taut beasts of energy as the blasting jolt of pure rock and roll lava via “The Hardest Button To Button” testifies. All these factors make this night stick out as measurably better than the rest.

The White Stripes sound fantastic, of course, leading off with Meg’s gigantic sound on the opener “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” and continuing on through the million-song set (OK not quite but it’s a lot of tracks). Jack’s guitar work on “I Want to Be the Boy” is bendy beautiful and the rollicking southern blues guitar on Son House’s classic “Death Letter” is over-the-top fabulous. Plus we get the early teaser of the smash “Seven Nation Army” and a bunch of early-Stripes favorites like “You’re Pretty Good Looking,” “Hotel Yorba” and “Fell in Love with a Girl.” Can’t even imagine how amazing it must have been to be one of those 40 folks at the Hard Rock Casino, and did they even realize how lucky they were?

Not from the Vegas show (there isn’t anything out there on YouTube) but “Dead Leaves” from Coachella the same year:

The Black Keys “Ohio Players” 2024. Nonesuch Records, limited edition bleach/smoke vinyl. Not only did this record just come out a few days ago (and it’s the first spin for me), but today is also Keys drummer Patrick Carney’s birthday (b. April 15th, 1980). Ohio Players is the band’s 12th studio LP. It’s too soon to say where/when/if it will chart (well, it has reached #13 in the UK as of right now). That said, there’s already three singles from the record: the excellent and funky “Beautiful People (Stay High)” which came out in January; “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” which was originally performed by William Bell in 1968 and famously covered by Billy Idol in ’86 on Whiplash Smile (Idol’s version went to #6 in the US); and “This is Nowhere.” I have no idea if the Black Keys will release any other singles from Ohio Players but of note are “On the Game” which features Oasis’ Noel Gallagher on guitar (he provides backing vocals on that track plus a few others), the ass-shaking funky “Paper Crown” featuring Beck on guitar and organ (he’s on a few other tracks, too, including acoustic guitar on “Fever Tree” – which has a very “Beck” feel to it) as well as Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia with a breakout rap; and “Please Me (Till I’m Satisfied)” which is one of my top picks on the record. It’s co-written by Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound, The Oblivians, The Compulsive Gamblers) and a gritty garage rocker. Cartwright also co-wrote “Read Em and Weep.” There’s a slew of other famous and not-so-famous musicians on the record, giving it a broader blend of genres than the Keys standard lo-fi garage-blues sound. Pop, r&b, hip hop, funk, garage punk, even some surf sounds are sprinkled throughout Ohio Players. Another top pick is “Live Till I Die” which has a great combo of psych, metal and jangle pop. Ohio Players is an excellent and eclectic listen, with tons of surprises on each track.

Mutts “Pray For Rain” 2011. Mutts Music (ie self-released) on orange vinyl. Another record that has been languishing in the to-do pile since before the pandemic. It’s gotten so bad that I don’t know if we bought this from the band or not, and if so when that could have been. Stuck into the record is this setlist on a cheap crumpled paper napkin and I have zero recollection of where/when/how:

Mutts setlist from ????

We saw Mutts (from Chicago, now mostly defunct since frontman/singer/pianist Mike Maimone relocated to Nashville – I think – around 2019 or so) pre-pandemic, both at Mile of Music and in Indianapolis for Romanus Records Fest (possibly twice there). They are absolutely fantastic live and Pray For Rain, their first full-length, channels a lot of their brand of energetic bluesy and soulful garage rock, punctuated by Maimone’s signature deep growl (one reviewer says, “Mike Maimone fires off his lyrics like pissed off Nick Cave in a blues mood”). Wherever/whenever we saw them they clearly played two songs off of the LP and they are two of my top picks: “Not Ready” which is super high-energy with a ska-like beat, and “Done It Again” which has a sinister waltzing beat and a feeling like the listener is darting along an old-timey 20’s film noir movie set. That old-timey vibe is also present on “D.O.B.” (feels a bit Cab Calaway) and the sinister on the super-dark, gothic (not goth, just gothic) “Save Us.” Two other top picks are “Throwback” which has a super-funky, slinky groove plus chugga-chugga rocking guitar, and the album closer “Putting on a Show” which is a combo of pure chaos, a highly danceable beat and some serious head-banging vibes.

The Pack a.d. “Unpersons” 2011. Limited 10 Year Anniversary edition on “Haunted” glow-in-the-dark green vinyl (2022). Mint Records. Ripping, ass-kicking garage punk from Canadian duo Becky Black (guitar/vocals) and Maya Miller (drums). Unpersons is The Pack a.d.’s fourth LP and probably one of my favorites. I don’t know what is in the atmosphere these past several days but this is another pull that I realized, after choosing it, was produced by Jim Diamond (Dirtbombs bassist, production for White Stripes, etc.) More l0-fi and raw than their later releases – I’d say angrier, too, but most of their stuff has a decidedly pissed-off edge. From an article on Exclaim “In a career defined by loud, grimy garage albums, the Pack a.d.’s 2011 release Unpersons just might be the loudest and grimiest of the bunch.” Unpersons opens with the banger “Sirens” which should have been a hit; it’s soooo good. The super-short “8” is another favorite, hitting hard and fast. “Positronic” is weird, ass-shaking and thrashing all at once. From the Exclaim article: Maya Miller “One of my favourite recording moments was creating the intro to ‘Positronic.’ I recorded my voice through a shitty little toy voice changer while Becky tweaked around on her guitar and Jim played around distorting it on a guitar pedal.” “Cardinal Rule” is buzzed, fuzzed and super-snotty. And “Ride” has such a wall of crashing sound it’s mind-bending to know it’s just the two of them making this much noise. The Pack a.d. do slow down occasionally (but remain pissed!) like on the more garage-blues “Seasick” and the slinky-speed/loud-quiet-loud “Take.”

White Stripes “Elephant XX” 2023. Third Man Records, Vault package no. 55, the 20th anniversary reissue of their smash Elephant released on April 1st, 2003. The Vault pressing is a 2-LP colored vinyl release (one red, one white) that also includes a Jack White 7″ single, a DVD and a gorgeous 28 page booklet of show posters, photographs and other assorted ’03 memorabilia. Up til now, we only have had Elephant on CD (because, of course, 2003).

Elephant is the band’s fourth LP and far and away their most successful as well as critically acclaimed. It’s included on many best-of-ever lists and won both the Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song (“Seven Nation Army”) at the Grammy’s. It went to #6 in the US and to #1 in the UK. It’s totally digital/computer-free; the White Stripes recorded it with all pre-60’s gear onto an eight-track tape machine. For the most part it’s hard to tell but I can feel that old-school tech straining its edges on “There’s No Home for You Here” about which Jack White said they recorded “to see how far we could go with an eight track recorder, and I think how far we went is too far.” (I love it, though, it sounds like super-early Beatles or Stones).

They released four singles from Elephant. The first was the mega-power-hit “Seven Nation Army” which only went to #76 on the main US chart but hit #1 on the alternative charts in both the US and the UK. The track now an ubiquitous sports arena fav which is a bit of a head-scratcher to me, more for the genre it comes from than the song itself which is simple, rhythmic and primal aka perfect for sports. According to Wiki, “This phenomenon has its roots in a UEFA Champions League football match in Italy in October 2003, during which fans of Belgium’s Club Brugge KV began singing the riff in a game against Italy’s A.C. Milan. They continued the chant after Club Brugge KV striker Andrés Mendoza scored a goal. Club Brugge KV won the game, and the song subsequently became the team’s “unofficial sports anthem.” The second single was the cover of Burt Bacharach’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself” (first recorded in ’62 by Chuck Jackson and then, also in ’62, by Tommy Hunt, finally made popular by Dusty Springfield in ’64). The Stripes version went to #25 on the US indie chart. The third single from Elephant was “The Hardest Button to Button” (#8 US alternative, #23 regular UK chart, #1 UK indie) and the final single was the aforementioned “There’s No Home for You Here.” I love all the singles and my other top picks from Elephant include the hard bluesy rocker “Ball and Biscuit” (fun fact: a friend of ours named her catering company Ball and Biscuit a couple of years after this LP’s release and her business is still going strong), “The Air Near My Fingers,” and “Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine,” a track that “was originally written for the band’s previous album, White Blood Cells, but Meg had disliked the song and it was removed. After debating it, the song was rerecorded and included in Elephant, but only after a line from the song was removed after it was deemed too harsh.” (wiki) Elephant does treat us to future-Jack White’s tendency towards bat-shit crazy, though, especially on the intro to the song “Little Acorns” (the rest of the song is pretty great though).

The Black Keys “Dropout Boogie” officially released today, May 18th, 2022*. Nonesuch Records. Limited edition “pink panther” colored vinyl. Their 11th LP, Dropout Boogie has their classic garage blues sound, albeit way less lo-fi now that they have the success and cash for more slick production. They also, according to a review on Pitchfork, have “both the star power and underground pedigree to corral garage-punk lifer Greg Cartwright (Oblivians, Reigning Sound), Nashville hitmaker Angelo Petraglia (Trisha Yearwood, Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon), and ZZ Top legend Billy Gibbons onto their record.”

I’m on my very first listen to Dropout Boogie but my first impression is that is really great and also very predictable (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing – The Black Keys are clearly very good at what they do). The opener and the album’s first single “Wild Child” is a fantastic alt-blues ass shaker that will most definitely be making an appearance on my Wild Thing playlist. “Your Team is Looking Good” is another great rocker and “Burn the Damn Thing Down” is foot-stomping and barn-burning. “For the Love of Money” goes a bit more traditional southern blues, as does “Happiness” and “Didn’t I Love You.” “Baby I’m Coming Home” has a 70’s arena rock vibe, but no complaints from me on that. I’m not wild about hazy, dream-bluesy “How Long” though the guitar jam is quite lovely.

I’m not sure if all copies of Dropout Boogie come with these inserts, but our edition includes a drawn rendition of the cover backed with their summer/early fall tour dates plus a pink slip backed with the liner notes.

The White Stripes “De Stijl XX” 2020. Third Man Records. Third Man Vault Package 44, 2-LP set on colored vinyl (white, red) plus 1 DVD. Released for De Stijl‘s 20th anniversary, this box set is almost as thick as textbook and chock full of goodies including a 36-page glossy booklet of photos, tour flyers and ticket stubs. What it doesn’t include is De Stijl (#38 US Independent Albums, #137 UK) which is fine because we have already on vinyl. Instead it has a entire side of outtakes and demos on Side 1 (the acoustic version of “I’m Bound to Pack It Up” is particularly raw and beautiful) upon which Jack White often calls out the chord progressions, and Side 2 has recordings the White Stripes made while on tour in 2000: the 7″ limited edition tour-only single of Thee Headcoatees/Billy Childish‘s “You’re Right, I’m Wrong” and an early attempt at Burt Bacharach’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself” (that song later re-recorded and appearing on Elephant). There’s three SubPop-released tracks, all Captain Beefheart covers (“The Party Of Special Things To Do,” “China Pig” and “Ashtray Heart“) on Side 2 as well, plus their excellent cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” (originally the b-side to “Hello Operator” on Sympathy for the Record Industry, Loretta Lynn’s “Rated X” and Blind Willie McTell’s “Lord, Send Me An Angel” (single on Sympathy for the Record Industry).

The second LP is from a live show at the Magic Stick in Detroit on December 31st, 2000. Since they were just back from a tour of Australia they play a couple of AC/DC covers: “Let There Be Rock” and “Dog Eat Dog,” Iggy Pop’s “I’m Bored,” plus live versions of some De Stijl songs like “You’re Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl),” “Little Bird” and “Let’s Build a Home.”

I haven’t watched the DVD yet but the Vault insert states that it is video of “TWO killer shows never seen or heard before their sharing here, from the peak of De Stijl touring…From June 15th [at Jay’s Upstairs, Missoula MT], the band performs strongly while advertising happy hour Pabst pints behind them. Only in Missoula. We think. Excitingly, this show is synched with crystalline soundboard recorded audio giving it an added ‘oomph’ not usually found on these videos…Follow that with the White Stripes first ever in-store performance at Fallout Records in Seattle on June 17th.” They performed a mix of originals and covers, including Bob Dylan’s “One More Cup of Coffee” and Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breaking Down.”

JD McPherson “Undivided Heart & Soul” 2017. New West Records. McPherson’s third album was a big success for an indie release: it went to #130 on the regular Billboard album chart but hit #4 on the Indie Albums chart and, a bit inexplicably in my opinion, made it onto Rolling Stone‘s Top 40 Country Albums of 2017 at #33. It is not country unless one categorizes this record as simply “rockabilly” – which it is not. It definitely is retro and mixes a hearty dose of rockabilly into a mix that also includes soul (especially the crooners “Hunting for Sugar” and “Jubilee“), garagey-blues that sounds very Black Keys-ish (“Lucky Penny” would be right at home on their 2019 album Let’s Rock) and late 40’s/early 50’s rockin’ rhythm-and-blues (the excellent “Crying’s Just a Thing You Do“). There’s even a touch of early 2000’s indie pop (“On the Lips“), some trashy glam (“Style (Is a Losing Game)“) and, for lack of a better description, garage funk (the great title track “Undivided Heart & Soul” which is swinging and sexy). It’s a really great LP and its diversity is tied together by McPherson’s songwriting and feel for a solid rock-n-roll beat.

Soledad Brothers “The Hardest Walk” 2006/2021. Alive Records, limited edition blue and gold splattered vinyl. Punk blues from Ohio, The Hardest Walk is Soledad Brothers 5th and final album. It’s lo-fi garage blues that at times smashes the blues like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion like on “White Jazz” (I think there might be some theremin!) or takes it straight into the garage like The White Stripes on “Downtown Paranoia Blues” (it’s worth noting that Soledad Brothers more likely influenced White Stripes than the other way around). The Hardest Walk also goes slow-mo honky tonk a la The Rolling Stones on “Crying Out Loud” and straight-up hard-driving blues in the spirit of R.L. Burnside: “Crooked Crown,” which is one of my favorites, reminds me a lot of JSBX’s Judah Bauer’s – and his brother, Donovan’s – side project 20 Miles who were active in the late 90’s. “Dark Horses,” whose chorus supplies the album’s title, is the saddest of the sad style of blues which is followed – on Side B – by the sunny upbeat rocker “Good Feeling.” Soledad Brothers even throw in some buzzy glam garage with “Loup Garou.” The Hardest Walk is a lot of things but it is most definitely NOT boring.
