The Moonstones “Cuando Cae La Noche” 2014. Soundflat Records. 60’s styled garage rock from Madrid, Spain. I can’t understand a word but hot damn this record rocks! Joe picked this up for me last month in Madrid and it’s exactly what I love in the garage genre. It has all the best of garage revival: punchy and danceable rhythms, gritty lo-fi(ish) recording, Farfisa organ and harmonica, fuzzy guitar; Cuando Cae La Noche seems to be their third, and final, LP release. From their Bandcamp page: “Influenced by bands like The Miracle Workers, The Chesterfield Kings, The Cynics, Lyres, The Sonics, and by sounds pervaded with Garage, R&B and all 60’s scene.” They cover a Chesterfield Kings song (it’s one of my top picks): “No mientas más” (“She Told Me Lies“). The rest of the album appears to be all originals. Other favorites include the title track “Cuando cae la noche” and “Necesitas más,” both high energy and ass-shaking. They do occassionally slow down, like on the album closer “Veneno de escorpión,” bringing the sound to a more garage-psych vibe. It’s all awesome. There’s not much live or video content available by The Moonstones (especially for this record) but here’s one from their 2001 album Fuzz, Farfisa y Fiesta.

The Courettes “Salta Il Ramo” 2022. Wild Honey Records. Limited edition 7″ single, white vinyl. This was a little bonus freebie that arrived from Green Noise Records last week. I’ve never heard of The Courettes, who are a garage rock duo from Denmark and Brazil, on this 7″ singing “Salta Il Ramo” in Italian. Their original “Hop the Twig” (sung in English) came out in 2021; this remake was released for their European tour and RSD 2022. In both languages it’s fantastic: sultry lo-fi 60’s garage with a pyschobilly twang and a sexy beat. The b-side is another 60’s inspired track, “Non Ti Lascerò,” but with a more upbeat and beachy/girl-group/wall of sound vibe, also in Italian. The original English language version, “Won’t Let You Go,” as well as “Hop the Twig,” appears on their 2021 LP Back in Mono.

More about The Courettes courtesy of AllMusic since I have not heard of them til today: “Based in Denmark, the dynamic duo behind the Courettes is lead singer and guitarist Flavia Couri, originally from Brazil, and drummer Martin Couri, a native Dane and Flavia’s husband. The two met in Brazil in 2013, when his band played on a bill with hers during a tour of South America. They quickly hit it off musically, and in 2015 Flavia relocated to Denmark, where she and Martin formed the group. The duo went into the studio to lay down some songs, and while they had initially planned to add more musicians to the lineup, they were so happy with the way they sounded with just guitar and drums that they made their duo permanent.”

The Greenhornes “Stayed Up Last Night” 1999. Italy Records. Recorded by Jack White in his Detroit home. Classic 60’s garage sound by Cincinnati rockers who would be future 00’s stars. “Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler would go on to be the rhythm section in the Raconteurs [Lawrence was also in Dead Weather and Blanche, Keeler has provided vocals for The White Stripes and has performed on records by Loretta Lynn, The Dirtbombs and Wanda Jackson to name a few] while Brian Olive would later join the Soledad Brothers” (from the Third Man Records online store, which re-issued this single in 2017).

Both tracks on the 7″ single, “Stayed Up Last Night” and “Shadow of Grief,” are straight-up first-era garage rockers, with a sound like early Stones and the Kinks. Both are a great mix of bright, jangly blues and rocking rhythm; “Shadow of Grief” has that classic 60’s organ sound and some country twang while “Stayed Up Last Night” has some killer blues harmonica.

The Go “Ferdinand Attic Demos” 1999/2019. Third Man Records, part of the Third Man Vault Package #41, recorded in the attic of Jack White’s childhood home on Ferdinand St. in Detroit (and on “Mottled Carpet Remnant” colored vinyl in celebration of the flooring in that attic) just before their studio recording of their debut album Whatcha Doin’ for Sub Pop Records (White left the band after that record’s release). I loved The Go back in the late 90′s/early 2000′s before I knew who Jack White was or even that the White Stripes existed. Raw midwestern garage punk in the spirt of MC5: this demo LP comes from completed unedited tapes – per the liner notes “all tape crunches, abrupt stops and general weirdness remains intact.” The demo has rough, lo-fi and somewhat muddy recordings of some of the great tracks that would appear on Watcha Doin’ like “Meet Me at the Movies,” “Summer Sun Blues,” ‘Watch Doin’,” “On the Corner,” “You Can Get High” and one of my favorite garage-punk tracks from the whole era “Keep On Trash.” The record feels like a 1:00 am show at a shitty rock club on a cold Midwestern night (but without bar banter and yells to the half-baked sound guy to turn up the sound in the monitors), something we are sorely missing these days.

The Go “Whatcha Doin’” 1999/2019. 20th anniversary reissue on orange vinyl (“summer sun variant),” Third Man Records. Originally released on Sub Pop Records (I’m pretty sure we have the original CD from ‘99 around here somewhere), The Go’s first album featured the then not-famous Jack White on guitar (he left the band after the album’s release). I LOVED this album when it originally came out, a fabulous mix of Detroit grungy garage punk in the spirit of MC5 mixed with glammy psychedelic elements (T. Rex, especially). Jack White remixed the reissue from the original reel-to-reel tapes and issued it as part of the Third Man Vault Package series (#41). The package also comes with another LP, Ferdinand Attic Demos and a 7″ single (studio outtakes of “Keep on Trash” and “Time for Moon”) plus a 30+ photo book of the band at various bars and recording studios around Michigan. My favorite tracks from Whatcha Doin’ have always been the gritty glam-psych “Summer Sun Blues” and “Keep on Trash” (both of which I put on mixtapes back in the day) but also great are the title track “Whatcha Doin,’” the 60′s garage-goes-pop flavored “But You Don’t Know” and “Suzy Don’t Leave,” the T.Rex dead-ringer “You Can Get High” and the grungy ass-shaker “Time For Moon.” I’m not sure why it’s been so long since I’ve listened to this record in its entirety but it’s definitely going back into more regular rotation.

The Fuzztones “Bad News Travels Fast” b/w “Brand New Man (And a Brand New Car)” 1984. Midnight Records. Fuzzy and menacing early 80′s garage rock, too few years removed from the 60′s garage rock movement to be truly called garage rock-revival. The Fuzztones were founded by Rudi Protrudi (singer/guitarist) in 1980 (or ‘82 depending on the source) and he remains the only original member. The Fuzztones are still around – and popular in Europe – and their last full-length LP Preaching to the Perverted dropped in 2011. “Bad News Travels Fast” was their first single and appeared on the 1992 reissue of their first full-length from 1985, Lysergic Emanations. It’s also appeared on a number of compilations throughout the years, including the 2017 Halloween Garage Blues release; The Fuzztones’ sound is perfect for Halloween – both “Bad News Travels Fast” and its b-side “Brand New Man (And a Brand New Car)” have a distinctly creepy vibe while still being quite ass-shakey. “Brand New Man” in particular with the screams and screeches that punctuate the buzzy guitar and Cramps-esque beat.

The White Stripes “Live at the Gold Dollar” 2001/2017. Third Man Records. Vault Package #34, Third Man Records, white vinyl. The final installment of the limited edition box set which also includes Live at the Magic Bag and Live at the Magic Stick. The show recorded at Detroit’s Gold Dollar was the first of a three-night run and the only time in the band’s history that they played an album straight through from start to finish, in this case their 2001 LP White Blood Cells.

Jack White starts the show by announcing “How you doing? We’re the White Stripes from Detroit. This is my ‘sister’ Meg and I’m Jack. We’re going to play our whole new album in its entirety for you,” and then launches into the killer deep guitar riff of “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” (which they played at the other two shows in the Live in Detroit box set; the only other song that gets a revisit is “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known” which they performed in ‘99 at the Magic Bag). Right away it’s obvious the sound quality has improved since the year before and Meg’s drumming seems more solid, Jack’s guitar even more powerful. There’s a bit of tuning and then the hillbilly stomp of “Hotel Yorba” kicks in followed by the killer hook in “I’m Finding It Harder to be a Gentleman” and the soon-to-be-classic “Fell in Love With a Girl.” There’s only one whisper of a cover in the set, “The Union Forever,” influenced by the mariachi tune by Pepe Guízar. Other show highlights include the manic “Little Room,” the sweetly sparse “We’re Going to be Friends,” the weird angry flamenco guitar meets The Mob on “I Think I Smell a Rat,” the thrashy heavy metal/industrial instrumental “Aluminum,” and when we finally get to hear Meg on the set’s closer “This Protector” (even though Jack and Meg’s harmonizing is a bit shaky).

Runout Groove Side A: THREE TVS… Runout Groove Side B: SHOW SO LITTLE TO SEE

The White Stripes “Live at the Magic Bag” 1999/2017. Vault Package #34, Third Man Records, limited edition box set on red vinyl. The Magic Bag performance (located in a suburb of Detroit, “chosen as a venue mainly to placate the fans who wouldn’t venture to see The White Stripes in rough-and-tumble Detroit”) on July 30th, 1999 was The White Stripes’ first show after the release of their self-titled debut album in 1999 and is included in the box set Live in Detroit released this past December (I’ll be blogging about the other two live LP’s in the next couple of days.) Also included in the package are three reproduction prints of the show flyers.

The setlist from the Magic Bag performance includes several tracks from The White Stripes (and generally they have a better recording quality than the gritty in studio ones): “Jimmy the Explorer,” “The Big Three Killed My Baby,” “Wasting My Time,” “Broken Bricks,” “Astro,” a stomping version of Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breaking Down” and the traditional “St. James Infirmary Blues.” Other covers they performed were Bob Dylan’s “Love Sick” (the first time they played it live – also the first time Jack White incorporated piano into a live set and he used it extensively throughout the night) and one of my White Stripes faves “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself” (originally by Burt Bacharach; The White Stripes would later include it on their 2003 release Elephant). A couple other of my top picks are “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” (on the 2001 White Blood Cells) on pounding piano and the raucous “Lafayette Blues” in French. Interspersed between the songs is delightful banter by Jack (especially in between “Wasting the Time” and “Astro” when he makes up a story about when he and Meg were kids), a bit of guitar tuning, some musical riffs and a shoutout to The Greenhornes (who drove up from Ohio to open).

Runout Groove Side A: BOOM BOOM DIDDUM DADDUM WADDUM CHOO Runout Groove Side B: SAY A LITTLE PRAYER FOR YOURSELVES

Gasoline “Fake to Fame” 2001. Estrus Records. Limited edition green vinyl. Lo-fi sloppy garage rock revival from Japan. The Vault is currently in minor reorganization mode (to make way for more vinyl) so we’re going through the current Main Vault collection and pulling records that can be relegated to the Overflow Vault (=basement). In the process, we are discovering records forgotten about, like this one. I had no recollection of what it was but it definitely looked interesting and Estrus is usually a pretty reliable label. Good news – this is pretty great! Fake to Fame is 60′s inspired with a gritty punk attitude, though for the most part I can’t understand the vocals (several songs are in Japanese). No matter, I’ve always been more of a music person than a lyrics one anyway. Stand-out tracks: slinky grooving “Man’s Man’s Time,” psychobilly instrumental “Don’t Turn Your Blade,” and blues-funky “You’ll Remember.” Less exciting: jazz-inspired noodley “Cool Kidding Part 1,″ its redux “Cool Kidding Part 2″ (a bonus track on the vinyl release) and the vaguely folky acoustic “Boogie Wrench” (actually I’m just more confused by that one). You can listen to the whole album here.

The White Stripes “Merry Christmas from…the White Stripes” 2002. Third Man Records/XL Recordings. The White Stripes recorded Side A’s “Candy Cane Children” in 1998 and it appeared on the Flying Bomb Records label’s Surprise Package Volume 2 along with Rocket 455 (“Santa Ain’t Coming for Christmas”) and The Blowtops (“Sidewalk Santa”). It’s classic early White Stripes: lo-fi, sparsely recorded bluesy garage punk and, later, die-hard fans would call themselves Candy Cane Children. Side B is simply adorable; Jack White reads “The Story of the Magi” from the Gospel of Matthew. Meg White sings a rather shaky a cappella version of “Silent Night,” adorably forgetting the lyrics, giggling a bit as Jack prompts her with “ron yon virgin” (which is incorrect – it’s “round yon virgin” – and she notes this to him at the end of the song).

Why don’t you open me up?

Candy Cane Girl
Don’t you know your name, girl?
Twelve people gonna ask you just the same, girl
What a world
Christmas once again, girl
That’s three hundred and sixty four tears, girl

So when Christmas finally comes
And nobody’s got a gun
And you think it might be fun
To hang around
Think again girl

Why don’t you open me up, huh?

Candy Cane Boy
Don’t you know your name, boy?
Nine people gonna tell you just the same, boy
You’re alone, son
In the middle of a million
And nobody knows how to talk to children

Oh, when Christmas finally comes
And nobody’s got a gun
And you think it might be fun
To get a new toy
Think again boy

Oh, when Christmas finally comes
And no one’s got a gun
And you think it might be fun
To make a stand
Think again man
