The Hollywood Brats “Hollywood Brats” 1973/1980. Cherry Red Records. Glam rock/protopunk from the UK (and sometimes credited as the UK’s first punk band), originally recorded in 1974 for NEMS Records but the label refused to release it. The band formed in ’71 as The Queen, changed their name, added a guitarist in ’72 (recruited through an advertisement in Melody Maker for a guitarist “drunk on scotch and Keith Richards”) and then disbanded in ’74 after being boo’d offstage and kicked off their label. The Brats performances have been described as raunchy, flamboyant and meant to “to annoy and disturb.” Contemporaries of and very similar to New York Dolls musically and with nihilistic tendencies like The Stooges and other US hooligans, the band leaned into shaking things up and being obnoxious. Singer Andrew Matheson “hobnobbed with (and stole from) Cliff Richard, punched a young Freddie Mercury in the mouth for having the temerity to call his band Queen (before renaming themselves, The Hollywood Brats were The Queen), and managed to alienate every record company that came sniffing. Even when his band was thrown a lifeline, Matheson managed to torpedo it. In 1974, Mick Jones, not yet of The Clash, introduced him to an eager Malcolm McLaren, convinced the Brats might just be on to something. Matheson considered McLaren a man of no substance, and sent him packing. McLaren had to settle for signing The Sex Pistols instead.” Reportedly The Who’s Keith Moon said they were the best band he had ever seen.

Hollywood Brats is snotty, glammy, hard rock and hilarious. The track “Sick on You” is about a man so tired of his girlfriend’s actions that he wants to vomit on her. Their cover of the Phil Spector penned and The Crystals performed classic “Then He Kissed Me” is dripping with punk sarcasm. The Brats continue to foreshadow the Ramones’ sound which evolved 50’s/60’s pop into a punk sound (“Zurich 17“) while “Tumble With Me” flips the narrative to the chaste “Wake Up Little Susie” (Everly Brothers ’57) and asks her, point blank, to enjoy herself and take a tumble. It probably had those early 70’s record execs clutching their pearls. Other tracks lament the irritations of youth like “Another Schoolday” (it’s sooo good!).

Here Comes the Good Part is Gyasi’s second LP – it’s my first listen (just came in the mail) and I love it! There’s a ton of 70’s T. Rex glam (“Baby Blue” especially) and Bowie (“Grand Finale“), but also a lot of other influences. My picks: The opener “Sweet Thing” – 60’s jangly psych-rock vibes. “Lightning” is straight-up fantastic rock: notes of Tom Petty plus some buzzy Jack White-style guitar: SO good. “Snake City” has its roots in stomping blues (with harmonica!). “Street Life” is Zeppelin-esque and a dead-ringer for both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, same with another hot rocker “Cheap High.” The riffs on those plus “Star” are killer. While not my favorite, there’s even some bossanova notes (and saxophone!) on “23.” I’ll have this album on repeat for awhile and fingers crossed he tours soon and plays a show we can get to.

Alice Cooper “Love It to Death” 1971. Today’s pull for the track “I’m Eighteen” because my kid turns 18 today. Hard rocking glam rock, Love It to Death is Alice Cooper’s third studio LP. It’s considered among the vanguard of hard rock/metal of the 70’s and inspired some of the heavy hitters of the 70’s punk scene including Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols (he auditioned for the Pistols by performing “Eighteen” and mimicking Cooper’s delivery), Johnny Ramone of the Ramones (he wrote his first song based on “Eighteen’s” chords) and Pat Smear of the Germs (Smear reportedly was inspired to start playing guitar after listening to Love It to Death). The record hit #35 in the US and went to #28 in the UK. The first single, “I’m Eighteen,” went to #21 in the US, making it the band’s first top 40 hit and its lasting influence has it included in many best-of all time lists. The second single released was “Caught in a Dream,” the album’s opener. A big riff-filled rocker, it squeaked into the top 100 at #94 in the US. Besides those tracks, I also dig “Hallowed Be My Name,” another hard rocker, “Black Juju,” an evil-tinged psych-rocker, and the glammy “Is It My Body.” One of the kiddo’s belated birthday presents is to see Alice Cooper perform here in Milwaukee in May.

Sweet “Give Us a Wink” 1976. Today, February 23rd, would have been Sweet founding member and bassist Steve Priest’s 75th birthday (b. 1948, d. 2020). Give Us a Wink was Sweet’s fourth studio LP and the first to be entirely written and produced by the band members. It hit #27 in the US but didn’t chart in England, Sweet’s home country. Hard and fast glam rock, Give Us a Wink is overblown 70’s awesomeness with intricate guitar solos and sometimes wailing operatic vocals (“White Mouse” has all of that and more), it’s what the UK punk movement was directly rebelling against. But it’s a really really good time! Our version is the US Capitol Records release, which flipped the European RCA sides A and B and adds the song “Lady Starlight” which originally appeared on the European versions of Desolation Boulevard (1974). Sweet released three singles from Give Us a Wink: “Action” (which leads off the US version) which went to #20 in the US and to #15 in the UK; according to Wiki it’s a criticism of the music press’s coverage of Sweet and has a “masked backwards vocal with the words ‘You kiss my arse.'” The other two singles were “The Lies in Your Eyes” (#35 UK) and “4th of July” (only in Australia where it failed to chart).

Gyasi “Teacher” 2019. Fat Elvis Records. Limited edition 7″ single on clear blue vinyl. I was listening to Gyasi’s LP Pronounced Jah-See this morning, remembering the warm days of early August when we caught Gyasi’s performance up at Mile of Music, where we picked up this single. Glittering glam rock, highly influenced by T. Rex and Bowie (if the knee-high platforms and the vinyl’s lightning bolt didn’t give it away), Gyasi is simply fabulous rock-n-roll: “Teacher” starts off with droning accordion and then launches into Zeppelin-meets-Bolan blues rock, with sparkles. I love the B-side’s “Adrognyne” which also appears on Pronounced Jay-See. It’s catchy, clever and definitely ass-shaking. Fingers crossed they venture north (they’re based out of Nashville) to perform again soon.

Lou Reed “Transformer” released 50 years ago today, November 8th, 1972. Lou Reed’s second solo LP after leaving Velvet Underground in ’70 was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. It went to #29 in the US and to #13 in the UK and is considered one of the most important glam rock records ever released and ranks among the greatest albums of any genre (NME, Rolling Stone, Q). While “Walk on the Wild Side” gets most of the attention on Transformer (massively controversial still to this day for its content referencing transgender people and oral sex; it went to #16 in the US, #10 in the UK and reentered the charts after Reed’s death in 2013 at #14 in the US on the Hot Rock & Alternative chart), I’m really partial to the record’s opener “Vicious.” “Vicious” is a cocky, swaggering rocker that was quite literally inspired by Andy Warhol who told him to write a song titled “Vicious.” I also love “Perfect Day,” partially because Duran Duran covered it on their 1995 LP Thank You but also because it’s simply a very sweet song (though it’s said that the subtext is about heroin addiction – which is not sweet). “Satellite of Love” (#119 US) is fabulous: Bowie provides backing vocals and it’s a really Bowie-flavored track overall. Both Morrissey and U2 have successfully covered that track as well – Morrissey‘s went to #1 in the US after Reed’s death in 2013. Also notable are the glam-rockers “Wagon Wheel” and “I’m So Free.”

Mott the Hoople “All the Young Dudes” released 50 years ago today, September 8th, 1972. Their 5th studio LP, All the Young Dudes made Mott glam rock superstars. The record was produced and arranged by David Bowie; he also sang lead vocals on “Soft Ground” and most famously wrote the title track “All the Young Dudes.” That single, released a couple of months before the album, hit #3 in the UK and made a respectable showing the US, going to #37; it’s been described as the glam rock “ultimate ’70s glittered” anthem. Other notable contributors to All the Young Dudes also include Mick Ronson, who played strings and brass plus arranged “Sea Diver” and rock photographer Mick Rock who designed the LP cover. Besides the title track, my favorite song is Mott’s cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” – it was released as a single in the North American market and parts of Europe but not the UK. I also like “One of the Boys,” another 70’s anthemic track, which was originally the b-side to “All the Young Dudes” and then released as a single in North America.

AMAZING glam rock, my favorite new-to-me band at this past weekend’s Mile of Music Fest in Appleton, Wisconsin. T. Rex/Ziggy Stardust/New York Dolls vibes for days, with dashes of Zeppelin as their nods to the past, infused with modern Ty Segall, Black Keys and White Stripes blues-garage riffs. Despite the very not-glam hour and weather (hotter than fuck at 3:00 p.m. in full sun), Gyasi put on a fantastic show and I was hooked from the first note and strut of sparkles and platform boots.

I’ve had Pronounced Jah-See on repeat since we picked it up at the show on Friday afternoon and I love every single track. The opener “Burn It Down” is an all-out glam rocker, followed by the blues stomper “Tongue Tied“: think Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney dressed in sparkles and heels. “Androgyne” is, I’m guessing, autobiographical and so damn catchy, bendy blues guitar celebrating individuality. “Black Strap” goes big and heavy; “All Messed Up,” the strutting “Fast Love” and “Walk On” go straight-up early 70’s T. Rex/Ziggy era Bowie with shredding guitar. “Little Tramp” feels earlier T. Rex, more psychedelic English folk (there’s flute!). “Feed Your Face” would be comfy hanging out on pretty much any Ty Segall album and “She Don’t Care” on a Jack White LP. (I should reiterate here how much I love Ty Segall and Jack White.) “Kiss Kiss” is so fun, like Zeppelin and New York Dolls had the most fabulous baby ever. “Swordfight” does not appear on the vinyl release but is on the digital version: not only is it a heavy-duty head-banging rocker but it also makes me laugh — there absolutely was air-sword during their performance and it was glorious. The opening lyrics of the closer “Godhead” sum up Gyasi nicely: “Well me and all my friends, we sparkle and we preen, outcasts writing fables…” I cannot wait for Gyasi to swing back through our area; I am utterly smitten with the music, the look, the performance – they are the full package and without irony: just pure straight-up genuine love for glamorous and heavy rock and roll. Including several videos here as they are all too good to miss.

Ty Segall “Hello, Hi” released today, July 22nd, 2022. Drag City Records. It’s my birthday today so it’s pretty awesome that I have Ty’s latest release in hand to spin (we received this preorder a couple of days ago, it includes a cassette of what I assume is the same material on the vinyl edition). In the incredibly small chance that Ty himself reads this: I’m doing much better, three weeks after the stage dive incident at the First Avenue show in Minneapolis. My neck and shoulder are only a little stiff and sore now.

Hello, Hi is a mostly mellow acoustic album (he opened his show at First Avenue with “Good Morning” from Hello, Hi and possibly “Saturday Pt. 1” and “Saturday Pt. 2“). Much of its sound is reminiscent of pre-glam T. Rex when Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took were doing their psychedelic folk thing, sounding like they would be most comfortable strumming a lute around the May Pole. Recorded in 2020 during the pandemic shutdown (the closing song “Distraction” pretty much perfectly sums up those weird months), Hello, Hi feels very introspective, intimate and quiet: many tracks are just Ty alone with his guitar, his voice frequently high and a little warbly as if just at the edge of being overcome by emotion – see especially “Blue” when his overdubbed harmonies croon “you can’t erase the pain.” His cover of The Mantles‘ “Don’t Lie” is lovely and lilting and “Looking At You” is simply beautiful, a little reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s mellower work, and one of my favorite songs on the record. He does add in some electric buzz and fuzz as the song builds toward its end. My top track is the total, all-out buzzed and fuzzed title track rocker “Hello, Hi.”

Ty Segall “Manipulator” 2014. Drag City Records. A double LP, the glammy psychedelic garage rock album Manipulator was Seegal’s seventh studio release; it went to #45 on the US album chart (and to #8 on the Alternative Album chart) and to #73 in the UK. We saw Ty play this past weekend at First Avenue in Minneapolis, where he played mainly from his 2021 release Harmonizer and probably tracks from his forthcoming album Hello, Hi due to be released later this month.

It was an awesome show that started with him playing solo acoustic for a couple of songs before his Freedom band joined and tore the roof off in a maelstrom of fuzz and buzz. We had secured a spot right up front which was excellent – until it wasn’t. There had been a small pit that formed and unformed throughout the concert, which was mildly irritating but manageable. However at the final encore, a couple of guys charged the security fence and leaped over. This is where things get hazy for me and I didn’t see what happened but the next thing I know, a guy apparently must have made it up onstage and dived – right onto me. He hit me at the base of my neck/top of my thoracic spine and I went down. I was pulled from the crowd and made it to a wall where I think I was surrounded by security asking me if I was OK. I was able to respond to indicate that I did not want them to call an ambulance as I was able to move my head and process thought enough to know what was going on (and to know that I did not want the medical bills associated with an ambulance ride and ER visit). When the last song ended and Joe went to get the car (no way was I up for walking through downtown Minneapolis to get to where we parked), security got me a massive bag of ice from the bar and I literally laid down on the floor of First Ave, draped over that ice. After a few minutes, Ty himself came out to check on me and find out how I was doing. He apologized profusely (I let him know it wasn’t his fault!), we commiserated on how the kids these days don’t know pit and stage-dive etiquette (Ty: “You make direct eye contact first! Then you go!”). He also expressed his love for Spotted Cow beer when he learned I was from Wisconsin (you can’t get Spotted Cow outside of the state and he had loaded up while driving through) and offered me one (I declined). He also offered me free tickets to any of his shows from here on out. (I’ve been in contact with his manager and she’s confirmed free shows for me!) So I guess that’s cool even though I still am sore and have weird nerve shit happening in my arms and hands two days later.

Anyway, Manipulator: it too is fuzzy, buzzy and awesome. My top tracks are “It’s Over,” the groovy ass-shaker “Feel,” the extra-glammy/Marc Bolan-dentical “The Clock,” “The Hand” and the Stooges-inspired “The Crawler.”

Another top track is the super-catchy “Tall Man Skinny Lady” – the video linked below is from Ty and his Manipulator Band performing at Grimey’s in Nashville, which is perfect because that’s where we picked up this copy of Manipulator just a few weeks ago. (Two of the guys in the band are in his current Freedom band: though the guitarist is now on drums.)
