Moon Goons “A Daydream Dark” 2021. Limited edition purple marble variant, self-released though another variant was released on Wax Mage Records. Heavy heavy psychedelic rock from Indianapolis. We saw Moon Goons at Romanus Records festival this past August; they put out their 2024 release Lady of Many Faces on the Romanus label. A Daydream Dark is their second LP – very spacey, a bit groovy and definitely trippy (as was their performance at Romanus Fest – the lighting was darkly intense and this was the best I could do for a photo). Their sound is also big – duo guitars, bass, drums and keyboards, with guitarist and primary songwriter Corey Standifer taking lead on vocals most of the time, except for “Finger Puppets” (one of my top tracks) when keyboardist Brooke Rice sings lead. Other top picks include the Gizzard-ish “Voodoo Medicine,” the spooky and exotically menacing “Alien Sewage” (their stage wardrobe consisted of janitorial-like jumpsuits with a weird alien-wizard logo) and another space-themed track “Cosmic Duality” which also has a touch of Sabbath-esque other-worldly evil.

This is one of the most exciting new bands we’ve seen play live in a minute – we caught them for the first time at this past weekend’s Romanus Records Fest in Indy. Space/stoner heavy psych with an impressive 7-member lineup, with THREE percussionists, two of whom share a kit. Incredible stuff. Think a mashup of Frankie and the Witch Fingers and King Gizzard Lizard Wizard, but with some dreamy synthpop + prog-nerd thrown into the mix. Super-duper nice folks too, from Louisville, Kentucky. I got a chance to chat briefly with both guitarist/main vocalist John and GONG master Dino after their set. Here’s their bio, lifted straight from their website

Formed in 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A. by 7 music school nerds, DOOM GONG has made a name for themselves internationally with their own home-baked genre, Denim Psych – a hodgepodge of psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, bedroom pop, lo-fi, contemporary classical music, as well as blood, sweat, and a lot of denim.

Having only released their first two LP’s in 2023 (DOOM GONG and Dream Behemoth), DOOM GONG has quickly become a mainstay of the psych scene in the U.S. and abroad, performing their enigmatic and seamless live shows alongside the likes of Amyl and the Sniffers, The Black Angels, BADBADNOTGOOD, Allah Las, King Buffalo, Bass Drum of Death, Death Valley Girls, HOLY WAVE, Gustaf, Ron Gallo…In 2024, DOOM GONG launched their international presence, completing two summer tours consisting of 24 shows across the eastern United States and Canada with immense reception. Soon after, the denim assemblage partnered with Romanus Records to produce vinyl of their debut album – all presses were sold out within an hour of its release. [ed note: I have a copy, just haven’t featured it here yet]

Side A of Megagong is heavy on the dreamy: synth-drenched and swirly, see especially “The Perilous Rise.’ Side B is distinctively heavier: one of my favorites on Megagong is not all dreamy (though it has moments): the single “Annihilator” which was released before the LP and currently the only track with any kind of link (I’m guessing until tomorrow) is mostly hard hard heavy prog synth with glimpses of Motörhead and Sabbath. As the title suggests “Spiral Dance of Imminent Doom” is another hard and heavy rocker (with proggy synths!) which is also supremely ass-shakey. Slightly less heavy and profoundly more frenetic is the excellent title track “Megagong.” Brilliant and otherworldly.

Doom Gong is currently on tour (not in the upper Midwest unfortunately, but I begged them to put Milwaukee on their circuit next time ’round) – this is one of those bands that you must see live to fully experience the intelligent insanity of their music.

Moon Goons “Lady of Many Faces” 2024. Romanus Records, limited edition tricolor variant. Heavy psychedelic + spacey prog rock from Indianapolis, their third LP. If the little gnome-like wizard drawings on the cover weren’t enough of a clue, Lady of Many Faces is a fantastical trip into what I can only describe as medieval space, a cross between Devo and Black Sabbath. With song titles like “Telesmatic Figures,” “Hidden Hermit of the Hills” and “Wizard Prison” (which is one of my favorites), the imagery is a mushroom trip with steroids and synths. Space age bleep bloops one second, epic heavy metal shredding guitar the next. Wild shit! Every song is a journey, with twist, turns, and startling creatures jumping out of the darkness when least expected. While likely categorized as stoner rock (besides the other labels I’ve already slapped on above), I can’t even imagine zoning out while listening to Lady of Many Faces: it’s way too interesting. I also won’t put the “experimental rock” label on it (though it clearly is very unique, edgy and explorative) because, well, it somehow makes sense in all of its glorious weirdness. There are melodies, harmonies and clear beats (though those beats change – a lot), giving the album an element of pop. Though I can’t imagine any of these songs will make to a Top 40 playlist, ever.

The band itself seems to view their record through a prog-rock lens that’s got 50ish years of blurry goo smeared on it, never cleaned from back in the era of the 70’s epic concept album. From an article on Nuvo, frontman Corey Standifer says of the plot of Lady of Many Faces (inspired by keyboardist Brooke Rice’s dream of a three-faced woman), “There’s the Wizard, who is unfortunately in his own prison. He’s pure, but he doesn’t know it yet. Same with the ‘Hidden Hermit of the Hills.’ He’s a total nomad of sorts, who lives by his own book. But the Lady [of Many Faces] needs him in order to fulfill this prophecy of good and spreading your true potential. The ‘Doom Tomb Giant,’ however, is wanting to take that away from them. The song ‘Phantom Erasion’ is essentially the concept of wiping away all the negative forces within your life and really trying to tackle that as best as you can. The Lady has many faces, so [that equates to] many characters and many concepts. But she represents really digging inside of your inner self and exploiting your selfless soul.”

Here’s the entire album, performed in order at their record release show in Indy in November 2024.

Wytch Pycknyck “Wytch Pycknyck” 2024. Limited edition transparent green vinyl, Property of the Lost Records. Hard garage-psych stoner rock. The debut LP from the UK four-piece that their label describes (with my editorial flair) as a Motörhead meets the Butthole Surfers, with a spicy dash of AC/DC, the Pixies and Sonic Youth. I will say that I think the band’s name is terrible but I guess on brand for their genre(s). Loud, a bit screamy at times, lots of shredding, occasionally messy, always weird. The opener “Rawkuss” is a total psych-rock banger. “Gravity Lies” is grungy as hell, totally channeling Soundgarden but accented with creepy spoken word stuff, something I’m generally not fond of it, but with these guys it works. “Fire Breathin’ Dragon” is an epically long ass-shaker and I found this take on it which is fun:

Fire Breathing Dragon is a top as fuck grunge number with a massive Geordie like riff teaming up with Pantera for a nu metal party. It’s a seven and a half minute banger that rocks with the rolls and punches high on the solo meter. After two minutes it goes all weird psych again with some gloomy synth from Ewan Fitzgerald before a slow doom riff from Bonj (not Jovi) slowly rises with some clever drums from Sam Davies who sounds like he knows his way around his kit. Malt sounds like someones stubbed a cig out on his arse at this point and is cursing the burn. It sounds great. It’s a tune that dabbles with everything and a sound of four mad bastards having a laugh. The guitar attack in the outro is brutal as fuck. –Wayne Cary

“Colombo No. 5” is one of the shortest tracks on the LP, another ass-shaker, probably the most straightforward garage rock track: tight, bass and riff-heavy, no zoning out on this one. The closer “Frostbite” is alt-rap with a charming UK accent, as if to drive home the point that Wytch Pycknyck is allergic to being classified (and to using vowels).

Mooner “Tabiat” 2017. Limited edition clear w/color swirl vinyl, Outer Battery Records/Bhang Records. Heavy Indonesian psychedelic rock. This LP showed up in my to-do pile and I know nothing about it so from the album page on Outer Battery’s website: “Released as a companion album to our Shark Move reissue, Mooner update the heavy psych sounds of early 70’s Indonesia while staying true to the roots of the original scene. Featuring members of The Slave, The SIGIT, Sigmun and Sarasvati, Mooner are a supergroup of the Indonesian heavy/hard rock scene. Tabiat is Mooner’s first full length and it’s a monster, 12 tracks of heavy psych with strong influences of Indian Raga and Middle Eastern touches thrown into a stoner rock stew…Tabiat is an extremely limited release, with just a few hundred copies being made available outside of Indonesia.” I can’t understand any of the lyrics but it doesn’t matter – the music is amazing. Head-banging Sabbath beats, hypnotic bass and buzzy guitars behind female vocals that alternate between slightly lo-fi and soaring, layered yelps. My top tracks include the opener “Buruh/Pemburu,” the groovy “Hei,” the shredding, ass-shaking “Lancang” and the wild “Serikat Penyembuh.”

O.R.B. “Tailem Bend” 2024. Fuzz Club Records, red vinyl. Heavy psychedelic stoner rock via Australia. Tailem Bend is the band’s fourth LP, released six years after their previous release in 2018 The Space Between for which they toured supporting King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (a perfect pairing). Since I’m not familiar with that record or their earlier releases, I’m relying a bit on other reviewers; apparently this record is a bit of a departure from their historically doom rock sound, adding in some more dreamy, pop melodies. A lot of the record is late-night-drive hypnotic but there’s some light jangle and melody on songs like “Karma Comes” and “Skyclock” (both have a 60’s Sgt. Peppers era Beatles vibe) and some ass-shaking funk – “You Do” grooves hard. But there is plenty of heavy heavy doom — Sabbath level — on tracks like “Morph” and “Commandment.” My top track on Tailem Bend is the danceable garage-psych rocker “Can’t Do That.”

Astral Hand “Lords of Data” 2023. Romanus Records, limited edition tri-color variant. Heavy heavy psychedelic space rock from one of my favorite Milwaukee bands with their first album after their pandemic reformation into Astral Hand from Calliope. We missed the record release show in March (we went to see Iggy Pop instead, pretty sure singer/keyboardist Al Kraemer will forgive me!) but caught them last week at Anodyne for their WMSE Local/Live performance.

WMSE’s Local/Live shows are a mix of music and interview so the band got a chance to discuss the origins of Lords of Data. They initially wrote the album in the deep woods back in 2019 with the intention of releasing the record, as Calliope, in 2020. Well, we all know how that turned out. As the pandemic dragged on and on and they continued to write, they realized that the “60’s funhouse psychedelic” sound that the name Calliope implied no longer described the evolution of their music. Heavily (heavily) influenced by Dune (ie the tracks “Navigator,” “God Emperor“) and other works of sci-fi, they rebranded as Astral Hand and it fits their vibe completely. Melt-your-face hallucinogenic jams that swirl in the cosmos, both live and on wax, Lords of Data is a trip. My top track is “Universe Machine,” a thundering, beat-driven (courtesy of drummer Dan Dahl) mind-fuck’d ass-shaker that had me grooving at the show. “End of Man” is another killer head-banging rocker. Other great picks are “Contact” and the epic “Psychedelicide.” The Local/Live show is their last for awhile as the bassist’s wife just had a baby (or is about to??) but I’ll be looking forward to catching a complete set from Astral Hand soon.

Spirit Mother “Cadets” 2020. Polymer Records. Heavy psych space rock. Spirit Mother Armand Lance on guitar, bass and vocals, Landon Cisneros on drums, Sean McCormick on drums along with Sarah Jane Long on violin. Had I not known it was violin, I’d definitely think that the crazy spaced-out sounds accenting the tracks on this LP were from experimental keyboard noodling. From their Bandcamp: “jangly, heavy and rhythmic with violin ominous, out front and present.” Accurate though I think the violin could have been even more prominent (though the closing track “Bajorek” is basically a violin solo). Violin is pretty up front on one of my top songs, the relatively rocking “Martyrs” (it’s still a total stoner rock track). I also like the jangle-forward “My Head is Sinking” (only a live version is available to link and its much less jangly than the Cadets version) the richly dark “Black Sheep” and the extra mind-bending duo “Shape Shifter 1″ and Shape Shifter II.”

Cadets is Spirit Mother’s first LP and it doesn’t look like any of the band members have been in other groups, at least after an non-exhaustive glance on Discogs. They released a live record in 2021 that has several of the songs from Cadet called Live in the Mojave Desert Volume 3. That record is part of series on Giant Rock Records, all recorded live and filmed in the natural amphitheater of California’s Mojave Desert and backed by a visual performance from the Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show. Other bands appearing on the series include Earthless, Nebula, Mountain Tamer and Stöner.

Heavy pyschedelia via Toronto, Canada: Hot Garbage opened for Frankie and the Witch Fingers last week and again, holy shit! So so good: swirling and hallucinogenic organ/synths (Dylan Gamble), icy cold vocals (Juliana Carlevaris), hot buzzy guitar (Alessandro Carlevaris) and nonstop hardworking rocksteady beats (Mark Henein). Comparing them to bands I love and listen to: a mash up of Ty Segall, The Limiñanas and Sonic Youth.

Since we picked up Ride after the show, I’m not entirely sure which tracks they played but I’m guessing the bulk of their performance included tracks from this, their latest release and first LP (I think its their debut anyway: according to their Bandcamp page they also have 2 EP’s). My favorite songs from Ride (and probably from their show) are “X-Ray,” “Everything Stops” (both heavy bass and beat-driven fuzzed out rockers), the slinky grooves of both “Soft as Gold” and “Fantasma” plus the hard tripping title track “Ride.”

The Pack A.D. “Positive Thinking” 2016. Cadence Music. Signed by the band last night at the Back Room Colectivo after their show. We became huge fans of the powerhouse garage punk duo from Canada several years ago after being turned on to them by our buddies Brother O’Brother (Chris Banta and Warner Swopes) who have collaborated with Pack A.D. in the past (I have action figures!).

Positive Thinking is Maya Miller’s (drums) and Becky Black’s (guitar, vocals) sixth album and one of my favorites; it’s crashing, fuzzed out and catchy as hell. The best of the best is “Yes, I Know,” a track I never tire of and that they played last night right before their encore (Maya with some exaggerated winking: “This is our last song!” – it wasn’t! They came back out for a couple more!). One of the best garage punk songs ever: angry AND danceable! I also love the album opener “So What,” the touch-of-evil “Medium,” the all-out insane rocker “Los Angeles,” the psychedelic edges of both “Gold Eyes” and “Fair Enough,” and Is It So” which is a wall of furious swirling sound.

The Pack A.D. put on a fantastic show, their second concert of their current tour, and I was thrilled that the turnout last night was so good. The last time they were in Milwaukee, in 2018 at Company Brewing with Brother O’Brother, almost no one was there and I was embarrassed by our city’s poor showing. We had tickets to see them in the spring of 2020 for their It Was Fun While It Lasted release, but we all know what happened to that. So thankful that they’ve finally been able to get back on the road.

I shared this video with practically everyone I ran into this past week to get them to come to last night’s show and I guess it worked!
