Bauhaus “In The Flat Field” 1980. 4AD Records. Last night we saw Peter Murphy perform at Turner Hall in Milwaukee as part of his ‘Stripped’ tour. Murphy charged his performance with regal and slinky energy, with perhaps a bit more sitting than 35 years ago, but he still busted out his crucifixion arms and black-booted goth ballerina toe kicks. His voice is still strong, too, filled with drama, dark brooding and maniacal sing-shouts. Too many show highlights to fully list but one particularly great song was “Hollow Hills.” Another fun moment was when Murphy started cracking up while singing – the source of his amusement was two young kids who were at the front of the stage and falling asleep toward the end of the show. He brought them onstage and gave the girl’s stuffed Pokemon a kiss, then sent the kids backstage for a more comfortable spot to rest. It was goth-adorable.

In The Flat Field is a masterpiece of an album. Allmusic says “Few debut albums ever arrived so nearly perfectly formed; that In the Flat Field practically single-handedly invented what remains for many as the stereotype of goth music – wracked, at times spindly vocals about despair and desolation of many kinds, sung over mysterious and moody music…” The title track “In the Flat Field” is one of my all-time favorite songs and this video of its live performance in ‘82 is worth watching over and over again.

Bauhaus “Bauhaus” Tone-Def Records, double album promo, released in 1990? Album 1, tracks 1-10, rejected studio mixes from Mask, 1981 and Album 2, tracks 11-20, March 1982, Milano, mostly tracks from In the Flat Field, Mask and Press The Eject and Give Me the Tape. The rejected studio mixes are quite great for rejects, but do lack a certain fullness and flavor of the legit Mask album (i.e. tracks like “Passion of Lovers,” “Of Lilies and Remains” and “Mask”). The sound quality of Album 2 is not great, like wearing earplugs at a show (so I guess maybe a realistic live experience). That said, the frenetic energy of “Flat Field” does poke its way through the mud and I can almost picture Peter Murphy’s manic dancing (in that same mud).

This unauthorized release is from a friend’s vault; he wanted to find out more about the album. Sadly I cannot find much more than I’ve already written above, though Album 2 mirrors closely the 1982 unofficial release Live in Milano At the “Odissea 2001″ on the German Geebo Geebo Records, so these songs are likely from the same live show.

Here is the tracklist as it appears on the back of the album rather than what is listed on the few websites I could find:

Muscle In Plastic
Passion Of Lovers
Hollow Hills
Dancing
Harry
Hair Of The Dog
Of Lilies And Remains
Unreleased
In Fear Of Dub
Mask

Double Dare
Flat Field
Silent Hedges
In Fear Of Fear
Lilies And Remains
Rose Garden Funeral
Three Shadows
Terror Couple
Stigmata Martyr

Dark Entries
