The Saints ’73-’78 “Live Nights in Venice Vol. 1” 2025. In the Red Records on red vinyl. Last night we caught The Saints (’73-’78) in Chicago at the Metro and scooped a copy of this limited edition EP. Just two of the original legendary Australian punks are still around, hence the ’73-’78 caveat in the band’s name. From the blurb on the concert website:

Featuring founding Saints members, guitarist Ed Kuepper and drummer Ivor Hay alongside honorary Saints: singer Mark Arm of Seattle rockers Mudhoney, former The Birthday Party / Bad Seeds guitarist Mick Harvey and bassist Peter Oxley of Australia’s legendary Sunnyboys, The Saints ’73 -’78 carry on where the original band left off in 1978 performing the material from their three incendiary albums (I’m) Stranded (1977), Eternally Yours (1978) and Prehistoric Sounds (1978).

Also joining the band onstage was a horn section, who also appear on this four song EP (Julien Wilson on tenor sax, Eamon Dilworth on trumpet and Mark Spencer on baritone sax). I loved the show! I really like Mark Arm so I was super excited to see him perform and felt that his distinctive raspy growl/shriek lent itself well to The Saints material. Not counting the horn section, 60-something Arm was the youngster in the group; the rest of the guys definitely in their 70s (or older). However, age is just a state of mind and they absolutely killed with tons of energy and rock swagger. The Saints played a couple of my favorites, including “(I’m) Stranded” (which is generally accepted to be the first punk rock single released outside of the United States, predating the first record releases from the UK punk scene, ie The Damned, and is lauded as an Australian national treasure) and “Know Your Product.” While “Stranded” does not appear on this release which was recorded at Princess Theater in Brisbane in December 2024, “Know Your Product” does (the swirly horns great both in person and on wax). While the single from their second LP (Eternally Yours) did not chart, it retrospectively is considered one of the greatest punk singles of the era. Also on Live Nights (and played last night) are “Nights in Venice” (from I’m Stranded) “No Time” (the b-side to “I’m Stranded”) and “(I’m) Misunderstood” (from Eternally Yours).

Garage punk “supergroup” composed of Ty Segall, Chris Shaw (Ex-Cult) and Charles Moothart (Fuzz). Their debut 7″ single is fuzzy, fast and ass-shakey. Ty has had about a million side-projects over the years but according to the band’s Discog bio “This is not a side-project, it is a necessity. GØGGS is three heads, one spine, circling the drain of the wasteland known as mother earth….The three of us have been friends for years at this point, crashing at each others houses and riffling through each others record collections after a night of performing, partying, or both…Ty and I decided we were going to start a band together when Ex-Cult opened for his band on the Slaughterhouse tour in 2013. A couple years later when the plans were solidified, it only made sense that thrash master Charles Moothart should get in on the experience.” (Shaw)

The b-side is an Iggy Pop cover, “Billy is a Runaway.” It’s even fuzzier (with some truly signature Segall buzz) accented with saxophone (played by Zumi Oneiro) and an intentionally off-kilter rhythm section, making it a wonky cacophony of weirdness. It’s pretty great.

Demolition Doll Rods “Tasty” 1997. In the Red Records. Noisy, lo-fi garage rock. The debut LP from the Detroit three-piece, known for their outrageous performances in the 90’s/early 2000s. Though it’s a great record, I’ve been avoiding writing about it for almost 6 years now because I really really dislike the cover art. I pulled Tasty to listen to back at the end of August 2019 after a rather surprising Doll Rod performance at the teeny tiny Circle A (now closed) bar in Riverwest (Milwaukee) where we and like just 25 other people were in attendance. The band was touring with Jon Spencer at the time; he played Harley Fest but my guess is the Rods weren’t invited on that bill so ended up opening for local Milwaukee act Ifihadahifi’s record release party. I was almost nose-to-nose with Dan Kroha (aka Danny Doll Rod, also of the Gories) during the show, arching my back on the barstool to get some photos. Original singer/guitarist Margaret Doll Rod was there, too but original drummer Christine Doll Rod was not (she left the band in 2006). I got a chance to chat with Dan for a bit after the show, which was a huge treat. Super-nice guy!

Tasty is both noisy and sparse, infused with blues punk and a Midwest industrial no-frills attitude. My top tracks are the ass-shaking “If You Can’t Hang…,” the snotty “Maverick Girl,” the more angular and experimental-leaning “Psycho Kitty,” the classic-blues infused “Lil Darlin”

And while I’m not entirely sure what two songs these are (other than they are not on Tasty), here is a couple of songs from their show in Chicago just a couple night after we saw them in 2019 since there is close to zero internet content from the Dolls from Tasty:

Their third LP (plus one earlier cassette release which I’m not sure counts?), and their last release. Mystery Girls’ guitarist Jordan Davis currently lives in our neighborhood (and because it’s Smallwaukee, I’m friends and longtime colleagues with his partner, Michelle); we caught a few songs of his current country twang project, Long Line Riders, at the Wiggle Room this past Friday.

They were pretty good but Mystery Girls much more my speed. Incontinopia is gritty, hard-rocking and a bit messy, just as punk blues is meant to be. My top picks are the garage rocker “I Took the Poison,” the noise-psych of “Quit Your Flyin Around” (great guitar work on this one!), the wild punk blues of “Cool It in Control” and the Bo Diddley maraca beat meets psychedelic freakout on “Cold Feet.”

Jukebox Explosion: Rockin’ Mid-90s Punkers! is a compilation of mostly releases from 7″ singles and rarities from the 90’s. We have a fair number of the singles from JSBX’s Jukebox series but a few of the selections on this comp are über-rare or are totally unavailable elsewhere. That would include the tracks “Caroline” and its b-side “Curfew Blues.” The story behind these two tracks is pretty great – to quote directly from the liner notes: “Caroline” – “Independent record label Caroline was the accurately rendered subject of what was originally intended to be the A-side of Jukebox single number three. The single made it as far as the test pressing stage (only four exist) before the humorless pussies at Caroline threw a hissy fit and began to threaten the band and label with legal action. Now this sneering stomper can finally be given a proper release.” From “Curfew Blues” – “This super-charged number was the B-side to the aborted “Caroline” single. Recorded at a VPRO session during a tour of Europe. On the trip, while under the impression that it was a particularly rarified variety of European cheese, Judah happened to eat an entire bar of soap that belonged to the Devil Dogs.” (🤣🤣🧀 – you can take a boy out of Wisconsin but he’ll still look for cheese) Also of note on this comp, though not nearly as hilarious, are the tracks “Naked” (again from the liner notes: “This ultra-frantic monster was the A-side to a limited edition giveaway single, inspired by avid nudist David Yow of the Jesus Lizard, who the Blues Explosion toured with early in their career. 100 copies were pressed and given to the lucky attendees at the Blues Explosion’s Third Anniversary show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey), “Push Some Air” (“Side A of a rare single released in 1995 on the short-lived Brazilian label Barulho del Mal, to coincide with the band’s first tour of Brazil. The single was only available on the band’s merch table, and all copies were sold out by the second date, an outdoor show in Fortaleza. Unfortunately the majority of the pressing was warped and only a handful are presently in playable condition.”) and “Dig My Shit” (“…recorded as a backing track for a planned Blues Explosion appearance on the television program Saturday Night Live. Due to a miscommunication between the band and NBC’s representatives regarding the use of profanity, the whole performance had to be scrapped. The song was later included on an otherwise completely worthless compilation on Matador Records.”). My top tracks, which are still interesting! are “Shirt Jac” (the first In the Red jukebox series, produced by Steve Albini), “Bent” (the B-side to the second jukebox single “Son of Sam“) and “Get With It” (Jukebox single #4, recorded during the Now I Got Worry sessions).

Alice Bag “Sister Dynamite” 2020. In The Red Records. New punk from an OG, Sister Dynamite is Alice Bag’s third solo record. 40+ years after fronting the legendary 1st generation west coast punk band The Bags (1977-81), she’s still rocking hard with power vocals – she also plays keyboards on the record as well as the glockenspiel (!!), marking a serious evolution in punk sound. One of my top tracks is the power pop/pop punk (with a bit of Alice growl) lead single from the record: “Breadcrumbs.” According to the Bandcamp notes, the song is “Laced with dreamy glockenspiel tones and brilliantly bratty backup vocals from riot grrrl frontliner Allison Wolfe. The video for lead single “Breadcrumbs” depicts a Hansel and Gretel flavored cautionary tale about not treating your partner like a witch. It features Bob Baker Marionette Theater as well as a colorful cast of familiar faces including Allison Wolfe, Nina Diaz, Seth Bogart as well as members of The Linda Lindas, Death Valley Girls and Fresno grrrl gang Fatty Cakes & the Puff Pastries. “‘Breadcrumbs’ is actually inspired by working with Allison,” notes Bag, who previously played alongside Wolfe and Seth Bogart in a band called Cliquey Bitches. “She’s got tons of attitude, and the intonation on that song is totally me imagining Allison singing it.” My other favorites on Sister Dynamite are “Sender is Blocked” which has a killer hook and “Súbele” sung entirely in Spanish, its chorus translates to “Turn it up, turn it up! Enough of complaining and grumbling.”

Workdogs “One Night Only!” 1995. In the Red Records. Heavy heavy punk blues, a “live in the studio” recording on August 9th and 11th, 1992 by Workdogs main members Rob Kennedy (bass, vocals) and Scott Jarvis (drums) who had a revolving door of guest musicians throughout the years. One Night Only! guests are none other than Jon Spencer (on guitar, theremin; Boss Hog, Pussy Galore and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and Jerry Teel (on guitar; Chrome Cranks, The Honeymoon Killers). The guest-star aspect of Workdogs was by design, humorously noted in the liner notes on One Night Only! “It is the principal that the Workdogs were built upon: every guest shall has his or chance to blow the ‘dogs into another dimension – each and every one of them bringing something special and unique to the stage – for one night only!…I never mention the perverse Workdogs’ penchant for pairing improbable sideman combos like slim trombone and lap steel guitar, or inviting ten musicians to participate in a karaoke cover band…I have had to take out restraining orders against more than one fanatical sideman to discourage their obsessive behavior. Fortunately this did not apply to the two sideman represented here. They understood instinctively that this was…one night only!” (Yves Bisquet*). Well, that’s not actually true as both Spencer and Teel recorded with Workdogs on Old (1995) as well as the single “Electric Mutt” (1992) and Spencer also performed on A Tribute to Sonny Boy Williamson (1994, 7″ featuring “Too Young To Die” and “Our Goodman“).

One Night Only! is raw and grainy, rough and lo-fi. My top track is the sole cover on the LP “Insane Asylum” originally by Willie Dixon. It is crazy, of course with the beats all over the place, weird starts, stops and yelps, and feels the most Jon Spencer exploding the blues. I also like “Unbroken” and “Roberta” which are both fairly epic in length and have a Stooges protopunk scuzzy strung-out dirge vibe, though “Roberta” eventually evolves into an all-out blues freak fest.

*I was curious to find out who Yves Bisquet was/is and found this interesting tidbit posted by Rob Kennedy on King Dog Biscuit Records’ Facebook page this past January:

The Demon’s Claws “Little Satan’s Pet Pig” 2007. In the Red Records. Lo-fi garage rock via Montreal. Little Satan’s Pet Pig is The Demon’s Claws second album and it’s a raucous hot mess, in a good way. Echoey vocals like they’re sung through a tin can, sprinklings of psychobilly and good ol’ time country swing with a bit of harmonica here and there (“1000 Rounds,” and “That Old Outlaw” as the titles might imply), some really roughed-up Stones styled rhythm and blues (“Gun to My Head”), but mostly irreverent garage punk, that manic energy likely pushed forward with the band hiring Jay Reatard to master the record. I prefer those wild numbers that really put the punk into the 60′s garage sound like “Shadow of a Castle,” the title track “Satan’s Little Pet Pig,”“Unemployment,” and “Cecile Lemay” which throws in a taste of that 60′s psych-garage organ sound to add to the insanity. The track “Hunting on the 49″ is really great – it reminds me of “Fed From Her Hand,” on their 2010 LP The Defrosting Of which I believe was the first song I heard by them. That track prompted me to buy that record – the song is a little like Nirvana’s cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” – simple and folksy with super-dark, creepy vibe.

Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin “Reverse Shark Attack” In the Red Records (reissued in 2012, originally pressed by Kill Shaman Records, 2009). Heavily fuzzed, psychedelic noisy garage punk and it’s so so good. Side A is jam-packed with seven fairly short, punchy and loud tracks; my favorites are “Wear Black,” “Drop Dead Baby,” “Doctor Doctor” and “Bikini Babes” (that last one so excellently 60′s psych-garage inspired) – all are totally danceable. Also great is Segall and Cronin’s cover of Pink Floyd’s 1967 “Take Up Thy Stethescope and Walk” – it’s completely insane. Side B has just one very long song, the title track “Reverse Shark Attack” which is just as nuts: distorted vocals, 60′s pop melodies, loping to crashing rhythms, abrupt tempo changes and general psychedelic freak-outs. Segall and Cronin grew up together in Laguna Beach, California (Cronin was born in ‘85 and Segall in ‘87) and while Segall is now probably the better known of the pair, Cronin’s resume is pretty impressive: he’s been in Segall’s backing band (working on Slaughterhouse, Emotional Mugger, Ty Segall and Freedom’s Goblin), Thee Oh Sees (on Drop), Okie Dokie and others besides issuing four of his own solo albums.

Wolfmanhattan Project “Blue Gene Stew” 2019. In The Red Records. No wave garage-noise rock by the alt-super-group that includes Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Jon Spencer’s Hit Makers) on drums, Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs) on guitar and vocals, and Kid Congo Powers aka Brian Tristan (The Gun Club, Knoxville Girls) also on guitar and vocals. Lo-fi, swampy and often catchy as hell, Bob Bert smashes the shit out the rhythm section (his preferred drumsticks? Hammers!) and the guitars are garage-jangly mixed with hard power chords. Long-time Bert collaborator Lydia Lunch even makes a guest appearance on the track “Jar in the Staircase.” My top tracks include the garage-blues ass-shaker “Smells Like You” which Wolfmanhattan Project released as a single in 2015, and “Now Now Now” plus “Silver Sun” (both totally danceable, too). There’s some weird shit on the album as well, like the VERY no-wave track “Toynbee Tile Blues” which is long and filled with lots of crazy beat, spacey noise, distorted “vocals” (spoken word, mostly name-checking various cities, planets and Stanley Kubrick).

Last week I got a copy of Bob Bert’s kinda-autobiography I’m Just the Drummer, sent and signed to me by Bert himself. It’s a delightful read, a little bit about the man: his background, musical influences and collaborations, and art – one of his works is featured as Blue Gene Stew’s cover – but mostly it’s short interviews and photographs of the multitude of other artists he’s worked with over the years. Some of those interviews are pulled from Bert’s zine BB Gun from the early 2000′s.
