Deep Sea Diver “Billboard Heart” 2025. Sub Pop Records on “glacial blue” vinyl. Dreamy indie pop, Billboard Heart is the Seattle-based band’s fourth LP. Deep Sea Diver charted in the UK at #77 and its title track/lead single “Billboard Heart” went to #40 on the US Adult Alternative chart. The tracks “Shovel” and “Let Me Go” were also released as singles. Fronted by singer Jessica Dobson (solo plus performed with The Shins, Beck, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs among other indie/alt royalty), it’s on the upbeat not-too-ambient end of dream pop, with a few garage-leaning rockers like one of my top picks “Emergency” and the grunge-bridged loud-quiet-loud “Always Waving Goodbye.” Most of it, however, is synth-forward, accented by sometimes aggressive guitars while Dobson’s clear yet punk-inflected vocals soar above. It’s a nice listen but a bit too ambient for my tastes, at least today. Might be more of a summer evening listen.

Yves Tumor “Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds)” 2023. Warp records on clear yellow vinyl. Electronic, experimental indie pop with a rock edge. This is a new acquisition, a “hmm, this looks interesting and it’s Bandcamp Friday” find (by Joe). Yves Tumor (aka Sean Lee Bowie) is a Knoxville native who left the South for California and began recording in mid-teens, the first release an EP in 2015. Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) – from now on referred to as Hot Between Worlds – is Yves Tumor’s fifth LP and it received very positive critical reviews and while I’m positive it didn’t chart (it’s way too unusual) it ranked on all the cool kids’ best-of lists of 2023 (Alternative Press, NME, Brooklyn Vegan, etc). It’s hard to pinpoint any top picks as the album arcs and flows along dreamily and seamlessly despite the wildly disparate sounds, influences and vibes. There’s an edgy industrial sound at times (“God Is a Circle”), trippy dreamscapes with a beat at others (honestly a lot of the tracks but “Heaven Surrounds Us Like A Hood” is a good representation) and Gary Numan/Tubeway Army synthpop weirdness at others (“Operator“). It’s a challenging listen, but in the very best way.

We learned – and laughed – a lot, including getting a full reading of the Hallelujah Ward manifesto. I believe he also said the record was something like 5 years in the making, started during the pandemic when he first worked out the guitar licks for the LP. Waldoch is backed by MKE celeb drummer Dan Didier (in, like, a zillion bands – currently also in Fight Dice, formerly in The Promise Ring, Maritime and Dramatic Lovers, though the latter might still be a thing?) and bassist Paul Hancock (I guess the band has gone through a few bassists since its inception).

They played most of the tracks during their set, including some of my favorites from the album. The opener “Your Uncertain Shadow” (its video a love letter to Milwaukee from Waldoch who is – both in the video and in real life – a true man about town. In fact, I’m fairly certain the tunnel he walks through at one point is at the end of our street), “Crown” (a seething nod to he-who-shall-not-be-named at the show), the heartbreaking and anthemic “Nobody’s Ghost,” the excellent rocker “Diet Suicide” (on the LP singer Liv Mueller from The Lovelies joins on vocals) and the jaw-dropping “The Ring of Brightest Angels, Around Heaven.” While the 80’s and 90’s influences are strong (even if I couldn’t hear them, we’ve seen Waldoch at a ton of shows like Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, Love and Rockets and The Cure: Waldoch is a Cure megafan), Everybody Swoons is not steeped in nostalgia, rather it feels very modern both in the songwriting and production. You can watch/listen to the entire set in video linked below the video for “Your Uncertain Shadow.”

I'm pretty sure we picked up this album from the band when they played Cactus Club in July 2019...and it's been sitting, sealed, in my to-do box ever since. Color/Sweat is the Texas "party folk band's" second release. I think we first saw them play [...]

I’m pretty sure we picked up this album from the band when they played Cactus Club in July 2019…and it’s been sitting, sealed, in my to-do box ever since. Color/Sweat is the Texas “party folk band’s” second release. I think we first saw them play in 2017 or 2018 at Mile of Music and they are so fun live. Stage props, wild outfits and costumes. And then of course the Jerry Bomb — it’s hard to explain (go to a show) — but for an general idea, here’s a photo from that Cactus show:

Color/Sweat is almost as much fun as a Calliope Musicals performance – highly danceable, dreamy, swirly pop with an edge to the shimmer. I can’t believe it’s taken me almost 5 years to take a listen. Singer Carrie Fussell’s voice is beautiful, lots of depth with a soaring range and the rest of the band is having an absolute ball backing her. I’m sure they played a bunch of songs from this record in 2019 but I absolutely cannot remember which those would have been. Top tracks include the opener “Fear This Body” and the title track “Color/Sweat,” the all-out dance party “That’s Why We Dance.”

Caroline Rose “Loner” 2018. New West Records. Limited edition clear red vinyl, signed copy. Caroline Rose’s third studio LP has been languishing in my to-do pile for over 5 years now – I can sort of explain. Joe saw her perform in either 2018 or ’19 (probably while she was on tour for the record) and for whatever reason I didn’t go. Then I’m pretty sure I hung onto the record to write about since she was (I think) scheduled to tour in 2020 and then…well, we didn’t see any shows for a very long time. Then when she came around more recently, we weren’t thrilled with her newer material so didn’t get tickets for the show. I don’t know what her previous releases were like but from the description, she used to be more in the Americana/singer-songwriter category (not really my jam). Loner, however, has a lot of fun indie-pop weirdness woven through the some more mellow songs which are likely more like her old material. My top track is “Bikini” which is a 60’s garage, organ-forward dance party with a lot of sarcasm – it’s awesome! The track preceding it, “Smile! AKA Schizodrift Jam 1 AKA Bikini Intro,” is jagged, super-weird and also dripping with sarcasm (and a topic I can totally relate to: it doesn’t happen much anymore but when I was in college working retail I can’t even count how many times some asshole dude would tell me to “smile” – as if it was my duty to make his day or something). I also like two other tracks, which are also in the weird column, “Money” – it’s quirky and a total ass-shaker – and clever, slinky “Soul No. 5.” The rest of the album is kinda meh but those four songs make the LP worth having.

S.M. Wolf “Precious B-Sides” 2022. Romanus Records, limited edition lathe-cut (clear vinyl). S.M. Wolf is a “fuzzy, psychedelic, power pop family band from Indianapolis,” and this lathe-cut single has two tracks that didn’t quite make the cut for their LP Precious Downtime (2021, Romanus Records) but were too good to not release out to the world. Side A has “Wide Awake” which has a 70’s arena-rock meets dream pop vibe (it works!). Side B is “Flat Water” – it has a liquid quality with some shimmering organ, mellow bass and beachy psychedelic grove. I have Precious Downtime but I don’t think I’ve listened to it since 2021 when it came out – I think it’s time for a re-listen to determine exactly what about these two tunes wasn’t right for the LP.

There’s not much in the way of videos for S.M. Wolf out there, not much of them playing live that I could find from anytime recently (including when they performed at Romanus Fest in 2021) so here’s a video of them playing live from 2019.

MC’d by WMSE’s Sid McCain and Milwaukee Record‘s Matt Wild, the band played tracks from their 2019 LP You Talk Loud plus some sneak peeks from their forthcoming EP, tentatively titled the Hiatus EP, set for a Fall 2023 release.

The Local/Live event is one of my favorite Milwaukee live music series: it’s early (6:00 pm!), only an hour long (done by 7:00 pm!) and free (FREE!). But more importantly it’s a chance to hear some of the band’s favorite songs to play live and also to learn a bit more about the band members and hear some entertaining stories. Now, because I know a couple of the Dramatic Lovers pretty well, I had previous insider info about the reason for the hiatus (BJ Seidel is heading off for a year-long travel adventure with his family) and also am well-versed in the band’s background and name (made up of members of past Milwaukee groups like Promise Ring, Decibully, Maritime and Camden and named after the WW1-era anarchist group that met at the Cactus Club), which were both discussed in the interview portion of the live radio program. But it was really fun hearing the story behind one of the tracks performed, “Blaze Orange” (to appear on the Hiatus EP): BJ went for a run in the woods of Door County during deer season and realized as he was hearing gun shots in the distance that he was missing the potentially life-saving blaze orange colors needed during a Wisconsin autumn. (A legit fear I know well, having grown up in rural Wisconsin, my parents basically forbade me from even going for a walk outside on our country roads during deer season.) Also fun was watching my good friend Anna hit the stage during the first song of the evening, “Throwing Halos,” to sing backup. (Anna is a fellow yoga teacher and we joked just before the show that she should do a handstand vault up onto the stage, like some crazed acrobatic fan since no one in the audience knew she’d be doing some singing. She did not end up doing that which was probably the best choice.)

Another highlight was the discussion of their April 2020 single release “Buried” b/w “Slow Down” that went Milwaukee-viral in the earliest days of the pandemic: they shot the video for “Slow Down” separately in their own homes in lockdown (BJ had nothing else to do but play guitar in his stairwell and Andy found his laundry room to be “super-inspiring”) and made it into what now feels like an historical marker about how it felt during those first few weeks

You can watch the Local/Live performance in its entirety to hear the sparkling indie-pop that is Dramatic Lovers here:

Green/Blue “Offering” 2022. Hozac Records. Jangling noise pop from the prolific Jim Blaha (The Blind Shake, Shadow in the Cracks, Jim and the French Vanilla). Offering is Green/Blue’s second LP (their third, Paper Thin came out in June 2022, while their s/t debut came out in early 2020). Dense and rocking, Offering calls to mind a mix of early 90’s Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, but with more of a pop sensibility, like you can actually dance to a lot of it. My top tracks include “Disregard,” “Same Waste of Time” (frantic, fun, heavily layered) and the title track “Offering” (even more frantic, slightly atonal giving it an exotic flavor). Green/Blue are from Minneapolis and Jim Blaha has played Milwaukee with some of his other projects in the past; hoping they’ll make their way east again soon.

Johnny Marr “Fever Dreams Pts 1-4” 2022. Limited edition white vinyl, double LP. Johnny Marr’s fourth solo album, released just a few days ago, is brilliant! We got a great sneak peek with the EP Fever Dreams Pt. 1 that he released in Fall ’21; all four songs from that EP make up Side A of Pts 1-4 including a couple that are some of my top picks: the single “Spirt Power & Soul” and “Ariel,” a very Smith-ish track. I’m just now on my first listen of Parts 2-4 and with the sheer volume of sounds, textures and number of songs I have a lot more listens in my future. But for now I’m smitten with “Lightening People,” which is dark and gothy with shimmering bright overlays of melody; the hard-driving glam-strutting “Sensory Street;” “Counter-Clock World” with its psychedelic guitar riff and anthemic chorus, the funk-tronic “Ghoster” and the swirl of “The Whirl.” The last track, “Human,” is sad but not Smiths-miserable, more sweetly and emotionally expansive, simply lovely.

Martha “Blisters in the Pit of My Heart” 2016. Dirtnap Records. Martha’s second LP, released in the UK on Fortuna Pop! Records. Another unknown-to-me-til-now vinyl gift from my friend Dirtnap Ken so this is my first listen to Martha, the bright and bouncy punky pop/alternative rockers from the UK who fit in quite neatly with most of artists on the Dirtnap label. Blisters in the Pit of My Heart didn’t chart to my knowledge, but did receive some accolades, ranking pretty high for Top Albums of 2016 (#20 with The A.V. Club, #54 with Rough Trade). Martha doesn’t have a designated frontman/woman – they all share vocals – and among my favorites on the album are when lone-female member Naomi Griffin (bass) takes lead on “Do Whatever” (subtitled “the fuck you like”) and “11:45, Legless in Brandon.” I also really like “The Awkward Ones” and the concept behind “Goldman’s Detective Agency” (from the liner notes: it’s “about an alternative universe where Emma Goldman became an Anarchist Private Investigator in order to take down crooked cops and corrupt politicians). Martha lists The Replacements as one of their main influences and besides totally reflecting that power-pop/punk sound, the last track on Blisters is “St. Pauls (Westerberg Comprehensive)” which references The Replacements’ “Bastards of Young” directly.
