Bob Marley and the Wailers “Rebel Music” 1986. Island Records. Compilation of Bob Marley’s recordings from 1973-1979. Groovy roots reggae, always with class and political commentary. Most of the tracks appear on other album releases, though the title and opening track “Rebel Music (3 O’Clock Roadblock)” is a comp-exclusive remix by Paul “Groucho” Smykle, different than the version that is on Marley’s 1974 Natty Dread. The song “Roots” has its first LP appearance here; it was the b-side for the 1977 single “Waiting in Vain” (#27 UK singles chart, #54 US r&b chart) which was originally on Exodus. It’s a great overview of some of Marley’s best work (and I’m pretty sure one of my friends made me a dubbed cassette of the record in the 80’s). I particularly like “Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)” from Natty Dread, the aforementioned “Roots,” and the Peter Tosh collaboration “Get Up, Stand Up,” originally on the 1973 record Burnin’ ; it was also released as a single, inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The version on this comp is the live recording from July 17th, 1975 concert at the Lyceum Theatre in London that also appears on Marley’s Live! album (also ’75).

While I don’t love this album as much as their debut The Overload, it’s still ultra-original and very, very fun (except when it’s depressing but not in a bad way); it went to #4 in the UK and has been included in many Best of ’24 lists, including those complied by Rolling Stone UK, Rough Trade and Allmusic. Yard Act played a bunch tracks from Where’s My Utopia when we caught them at the quite small X-Ray Arcade this past October (such a fantastic show). Two of my top picks (and ones that made me dance up a frenzy at the show) are the singles “We Make Hits” and “Dream Job,” both high energy punk-disco ass-shakers. Also performed and released as singles were “Petroleum” (which has a darker and more subtle groove) and the upbeat-yet-depressing “When the Laughter Stops” (I have no idea if any of these singles charted), plus the non-singles “Fizzy Fish,” “Down by the Stream,” and “A Vineyard for the North.” There’s a bit too much spoken-word on the record for my tastes (ie “Blackpool Illumination“), but in their spirit of anything goes, that fits Yard Act’s non-classification.

PJ Harvey “4-Track Demos” 1993. Island Records. Noisy, super-raw demos and unreleased tracks from the Rid of Me (1993) era. This sort-of companion record to the widely critically acclaimed Rid of Me (produced by Steve Albini) was recorded at her home and produced by Harvey herself. It hit #19 on the UK charts. According to Wiki, she “briefly contemplated releasing Rid of Me as a double album, consisting of the studio album on one disc and the demo versions on another. However, considering that Rid of Me was to be her major label debut, a double album ended up being a move that neither Harvey nor Island wanted to make.” She ended up releasing 4-Track Demos as a stand-alone, just after her band that recorded Rid of Me disbanded, to show another side of several of the tracks. She also includes six previously un-released songs, ones that do not appear on Rid of Me: “Reeling,” which is one of my favorites on this album, “Driving,” “Hardly Wait,” “Easy,” “M-Bike” and “Goodnight.” I really love the demo’d versions of some tracks that appear, much much more produced, on Rid of Me including the absolutely hooked “Hook,” the absolutely crazed demo version of the single “50ft Queenie” (the Rid of Me version went to #27 in the UK), the powerful “Rub ‘Til it Bleeds,” bendy-bluesy “Ecstasy” and a track that out-noise-rocks bands like Sonic Youth, “Snake.”

U2 “The Joshua Tree” released 35 years ago today, March 9th, 1987. Island Records. I got this copy on April 19th, 1987: I generally do not record the exact day that an album comes into my collection but this was my “Easter basket” that year, hidden cleverly behind a large piece of artwork in my parents’ living room (I was just shy of 16 and found it in like 2 minutes) so that makes it easy to remember. This is also the last U2 album I was actually excited about; they have had plenty of great songs since but my interest in owning their records halted abruptly after my profound disappointment in Rattle and Hum.

The Joshua Tree marked U2′s ascension from “heroes to superstars” (Rolling Stone), generated their only #1 singles in the US (“With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”) and became one of the world’s best-selling albums of all-time, earning placement in the National Recording Registry by the US Library of Congress. It was their 5th LP and went to #1 virtually everywhere, including the US and the UK. It’s also tangled up in a lot of teenage angst, heartbreak and joy for me as being 15 almost 16 is super-complicated. Thirty-five years later, I still really love it – every single soaring, over-the-top jangled note. Besides the two #1 singles, I particularly love “Where the Streets Have No Name” (#4 UK, #13 US), “Running to Stand Still,” “In God’s Country” (#44 US) and “One Tree Hill.” “Mothers of the Disappeared” is also beautiful but so devastatingly sad that it’s difficult to listen to, especially knowing that it’s about the the Madres de Plaza de Mayo whose children were “forcibly disappeared” at the hands of the Argentine and Chilean dictatorships. (Wiki)

U2 “Boy” released 40 years ago today, October 20th, 1980. North American version with alternate album cover, Island Records. U2′s debut LP went to #52 in the UK and #63 in the US. Boy is generally darker and more post-punk sounding than their later stridently earnest anthemic pop work, Boy does hint at that direction with its signature U2 sound: Edge’s distinctive style of guitar (on Boy influenced by Siouxsie and the Banshees and Television) and Bono’s soaring vocals. They released two singles from the album: the new wave-tinged “A Day Without Me” and “I Will Follow” (two of my favorites). “I Will Follow” went to #20 in the US in ‘81 and its re-release in ‘83 hit #81. I also really like “Twilight,” the rockers “Out of Control” and “Stories for Boys,” the atmospheric “The Ocean” and the Banshee-esque “Shadows and Tall Trees.”

Frankie Goes to Hollywood “Welcome to the Pleasuredome” released 35 years ago today, March 18th, 1985. 12″ single, super-limited (300 copies) test pressing on clear vinyl. And according to the letter included by Jeff J. White of Island Records, he stole the pressings for radio stations from Island’s “never to be distributed vault.”

“Welcome to the Pleasuredome” was FGTH’s fourth and final single from their debut smash album Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, released in fall of ‘84. The title track wen to #2 in the UK, the only single from the record which didn’t hit #1 (stymied by Phil Collins’, that f*ckr, and Phillip Bailey’s duet “Easy Lover”) in the UK; it went to #48 in the US. There’s a whole slew of versions of this track, the single and album versions differ and even the 7″ single had variations and it was impossible to know which one you got based on the cover and catalogue numbers which were identical, though I guess the paper sleeves varied in thickness. Weird. Because it’s a test pressing, this copy has different tracks than the commercial release (though it’s not that dissimilar from the US and UK 12″ – those included the track “Get It On” (T. Rex) and “Happy Hi!”). Side A has “Welcome to the Pleasuredome (Trevor Horn Remix)” which was the standard remix for the commercial versions. Side B has a remix I’ve never heard before and doesn’t seem to be available on any other releases (though I’m sure someone out there will correct me if I’m wrong): “Welcome to the Pleasuredome (Vocal/KZAP Edit)” and it’s super-cool with extended instrumentals, acoustic-ish guitar jams and extra Holly Johnson sing-snarls. Also on Side B is “Relax (Vocal/Live Version).”

I saw Frankie Goes to Hollywood perform a few months after the release of this single in July, 1985 in Irvine, CA. My dad and I traveled to Los Angeles that summer for a family reunion and he somehow got us hooked up with really great seats for this concert. FGTH were massively popular in ‘85 and at the time were my second-favorite band (behind Duran Duran of course). It was a wild show and I’m sure my dad was massively uncomfortable the entire time. I was pretty clueless as to the context of all of their songs so I just danced and screamed the entire time (I was like 13 years old so of course I did).

U2 “Boy” released on this date, October 20th, 1980. Island Records, North American cover. U2′s debut LP, Boy reached #52 in the UK and #63 in the US, propelled by their first hit single, the soaring “I Will Follow.” The entire album showcases U2′s penchant for recording BIG music, songs meant to take up vast amounts of space, echoing large in the aural field and their raw emotions ripping huge heart holes. Wiki says, “The album’s theme is the psychological nature of the transition of adolescence from childhood to manhood, with lyrics and atmospheric music examining a dawn of sexuality (“An Cat Dubh”), the entry into adolescence (“Twilight”), mortality (“Out of Control”), the exile from one’s past enforced by the passage of time (“Into the Heart”), mental disturbance (“The Electric Co.”) and youthful ambition (“The Ocean”). “I Will Follow” focused on the trauma of the early death of Bono’s mother when he was a young teenager. The album’s lyrics possess several literary references, “Shadows and Tall Trees” taking its name from a chapter title in the dystopian William Golding novel Lord of the Flies, and “The Ocean” mentioning Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Grey.”

Frankie Goes To Hollywood “Relax” b/w “One September Monday” 1983. Island Records. 45 rpm. This week in February ‘84 “Relax” was #1 on the UK charts propelled by the band’s early January appearance on Top of the Pops and the brief airplay ban by BBC, then reached #2 again in the UK in June after the release of “Two Tribes” (which made it to #1), eventually making the single one of the top-selling singles in UK chart history. “Relax” was not released in the US until late in ‘84 and finally made it to the US Top 10 in March of ‘85.

The song was highly controversial due to its overt sexual references, even though the band initially claimed the lyrics were not meant to be suggestive. However, after the release of Welcome to the Pleasuredome in 1985, upon which the single was included, the (obvious) truth came out: the liner notes state “Like, when people ask you what ‘Relax’ was about, when it first came out we used to pretend it was about motivation, and really it was about shagging.” Shocking! I thought the line “Relax, don’t do it/When you want to suck it, do it/Relax, don’t do it/ When you want to come” was meant to be spiritually uplifting!

The b-side, “One September Monday” is not really a song, it’s more of a kinda interview over vague beats between music journalist Paul Morley and FGTH’s Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford, where among other disjointed discussions, they reveal the source of the band’s name. You can read the transcript here.

U2 “The Joshua Tree” gatefold, released on this day March 9 in 1987. Island Records. I received this album soon after its release in ‘87 as an Easter present from my parents. My dad has a quirky talent for treasure hunts so every Easter he’d hide an Easter basket (when I was little) and then something more mature (like a U2 record) as I got older. (He now has upped his game considerably for his grandson and the treasure hunts have become elaborate 1-2 hour searches.) I was just shy of 16 years old in ’87 and knew his hiding style well and found “The Joshua Tree” after about 10 minutes behind a large canvas painting that hung in our living room.

“The Joshua Tree” is a true classic: most of the songs are still musically relevant and fresh after almost 30 years so it’s no surprise that it is one of the world’s best-selling albums of all time. Tinged with longing and sadness, it is perfect for road trips and/or wallowing in the depths of any kind of personal loss. “With Or Without You” was always a go-to song during adolescent heartbreak, as was “Running to Stand Still,” which still gives me literal chills. “Where the Streets Have No Name” evokes the expanse of the American west perfectly, while “Bullet the Blue Sky” punches that west in the gut. But with “In God’s Country” and “One Tree Hill” the love for our wild open spaces comes back with a feeling of hope and optimism and I want drive fast through mountains and deserts, windows down and the sun shining.
