The J. Geils Band “Love Stinks” 1980. The band’s namesake musician and guitarist, J. Geils (b. John Warren Geils Jr., 1946) died at age 71 yesterday, April 11th. Love Stinks was the bands’ 11th album, reaching #18 on the album charts with three singles: “Come Back” (#32), “Just Can’t Wait” (#78) and “Love Stinks” (#38). Love Stinks is fairly straight-forward rock-n-roll, propelled by a hearty dose of humor, power chords and occasionally some hard-driving harmonica (“Takin’ You Down”) and piano (their cover of “Night Time” – also lots of harmonica). Since this isn’t usually the kind of music I listen to, I’ll quote Allmusic’s take on it:

Released some two years after the band’s EMI debut, Sanctuary, the Love Stinks project would see the J. Geils Band going in an even more commercial-leaning direction than its predecessor. Taking over the main production duties, keyboard player/main songwriter Seth Justman set out to better the band’s gold-plus-selling Sanctuary. And to some degree, he wildly succeeded. Although not as consistent or diverse as Sanctuary, Love Stinks would feature one of the band’s most recognizable FM songs ever – the album’s infectious title track “Love Stinks.” In a live setting, the track would often turn into a veritable tour de force only to be outdone by Peter Wolf’s hilarious rap about “Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden smoking weed together,” which would introduce the song (often on a nightly basis). “Night Time” is another great, although somewhat typical “rave-on” type of J. Geils song; “No Anchovies Please” is a little strange; and closer “Till the Walls Come Tumblin’ Down” is, as the song title hints, just that. Bolstered by “Just Can’t Wait,” another good album opener, Love Stinks turns out to be solid effort, but one that sounds a little outdated at times due to its acerbic, synth textures. Not one of the band’s best overall records but one that would allow the band to outdo itself with the classic Freeze Frame a year later.

The J. Geils Band “Freeze Frame” 1981. Today, March 7th, is lead vocalist Peter Wolf’s 70th birthday (b. Peter W. Blankfield in 1946). Freeze Frame made it to #1 on the US charts in 1982. It marked a departure from the band’s previous ‘bar band R&B, hard-driving rock’ groove of the 1970′s and boogied them into the sleek sound of the 80′s.

Pop rock with some new wave influences, Freeze Frame’s success was spurred by three Top 40 singles, two of which made it into the Top 10: “Centerfold” and “Freeze Frame.” “Angel in Blue” made it to #40. I remember listening to Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 in ‘82 with my little tape recorder (which looked a lot like the one pictured above) waiting for “Centerfold” and “Freeze Frame” to be played so I could press record/play (and hoping it wouldn’t be one of those irritating times when Casey would just play a snippet of the song and then keep talking). A naïve elementary school kid at the time, I was completely clueless of the print pornography content of both songs – I just wanted to dance!
