The Other Kids “Living in the Mirror” 1985. Boat Records. Produced by Butch Vig, recorded at Smart Studios; mid-80’s jangly Midwestern alternative power pop. Think The Replacements with less of edge and a smattering of R.E.M and Cheap Trick. Our copy clearly used, and likely part of the Cafe Voltaire dj collection based on the cover graffiti. Cafe Voltaire was a short-lived mid-80’s Bay View/Milwaukee club that became the Odd Rock in ’87 (an infamous music venue that hosted bands like Social Distortion – that show notorious for a bunch of arrests and general mayhem – I still stories about it to this day). My guess is that Madison-based The Other Kids most likely performed at Cafe Voltaire and dropped off a copy of their debut LP after the show. The Other Kids were as short-lived as Cafe Voltaire, recording two records in ’85 and ’87, though it looks like they have reunited for shows on and off in subsequent years. My favorite track is the glam-inspired “She’s Got Me Where It Hurts” which is edgier than most of the album – a real rocker. The only version I can find is a live one, recorded at the UW Madison Field House, probably in ’85. The album track is much better. The rest of the songs are fine (the production: excellent), but kind of bland in a jangly, shimmery very 80’s way. The title track exemplifies that sound and vibe pretty well.

As this is very obscure band, there is next to nothing online but I did find this live performance “Where the Wild Things Are” (not on Living in the Mirror) from ’87 at the now gone but not forgotten and also infamous O’Cayz Corral (Madison):

The Smiths “This Charming Man” released 40 years ago today, October 31st, 1983. Today is also Johnny Marr’s 60th birthday (b. John Maher, 1963). 12″ single released on Rough Trade. “This Charming Man” was The Smiths second single; it went to #25 on the main UK singles chart and to #1 on their Indie chart in ’83. Upon its reissue in ’92, it hit #8 on the main UK chart. This is the US version: on Side A appears “This Charming Man (New York) Vocal” (Remixed by François Kevorkian) and on Side B is a rather spaghetti-western leaning intro’d instrumental version “This Charming Man (New York) Instrumental” (Remixed by François Kevorkian) which also has overtones of David Bowie’s “Modern Love” (also released in ’83). Kevorkian, aka François K, is “a French-born, U.S.-based DJ, producer, remixer and label owner who started his career DJing in clubs such as the Paradise Garage and Studio 54. Kevorkian has produced and remixed work by a diverse range of musicians including the Smiths, Adam Ant, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and U2, and is considered one of the forefathers of house music.” (Wiki). “This Charming Man” is bouncy, upbeat jangly indie-rock – one of my top Smith singles – with typically poetic, a bit depressing and a bit hilarious Morrissey lyrics which are endlessly quotable in everyday situations: “I would go out tonight, but I haven’t got a stitch to wear” is something I love to mutter to myself as I gaze into my closet (well, that’s not entirely true – I rarely go out for going out’s sake and when I do, I generally don’t really care what I wear).

Eleventh Dream Day “Eleventh Dream Day” 1987. Fan Club Records (1989 French reissue, originally released on Amoeba Records). The debut EP from Chicago alt-rockers. Jangly, twangy and psychedelic-tinged, the Eleventh Dream Day EP is guitar-forward and DIY-spirited: while it doesn’t neatly fit into the garage-rock genre, it certainly has that fuzzed-out sound and flavor. My top track is the hypnotic and ass-shakingly grooving “Not the Ballad of a Girl” which somehow manages to have guitar blues riffs, a funk’d out bassline, psychedelic swirls and an addictive hook wrapped into one monster tune. Also amazing are the EP opener “Walking Through the Barrel of a Gun,” the bluesy Americana punk’d-up “the Arsonist,” and “Liz Beth” which is a darkly jangled rocker (and the opening bit sounds like a Pixies song). I feel like the west coat had the Gun Club, the south had R.E.M. and the Midwest had Eleventh Dream Day: each brought powerful early 80’s indie-rock to their respective regions (Eleventh Dream Day got together in ’83), though to varying degrees of success (obviously).

We’ve only seen Eleventh Dream Day perform once (to my knowledge), in May 2019 when they opened for The Dream Syndicate here in Milwaukee. I got the setlist from the show (on a styrofoam plate) and confirmed none of the songs performed that night were from this first EP (but it still was a great show).

R.E.M. “Murmur” released 40 years ago today, April 12th, 1983. R.E.M.’s debut album was a critical success, included on a ton of best-of lists (Spin, Rolling Stone, etc) and it hit #36 in the US. The alternative (at the time more likely called college-radio rock) jangle rock LP did not do that well commercially at the time (my guess is that college kids had no money to buy records) but since has gone gold. One of my favorite R.E.M. songs, “Radio Free Europe” appears on the album, though a different version was released as the album’s first single; it hit #78 on the main US Hot 100 chart and went to #25 on the Mainstream Rock chart. “Radio Free Europe” was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2010 for “setting the pattern for later indie rock releases by breaking through on college radio in the face of mainstream radio’s general indifference.” (wiki) It also features the band’s early trademark jangle and unintelligible, opaque lyrics. I love it. Also top for me on Murmur is “Talk About the Passion” (their second and final single from the record, released in Europe only), the hauntingly sparse and beautiful (and totally not-understandable) “Perfect Circle,” the complexity and epicness of the guitar and rhythm of “9-9” and the Byrds-esque “Sitting Still.” The lyrical discussion of this track is hilarious: it’s mostly Michael Stipe making up “nonsensical vowels strung together and that he merely approximates the words when he sings the song in concert” and the line, “We can gather, throw a fit” has often been misinterpreted as “We can gather, throw up beer,” which is absolutely perfect for college rock.

The Dream Syndicate “The Days of Wine and Roses” released 40 years ago today, October 28th, 1982. Ruby Records. Jangly post-punk, The Days of Wine and Roses helped define the “paisley underground” musical movement of the 80’s, a sound characterized by psychedelia, jangly guitars and a 60’s garage aesthetic. The Days of Wine and Roses is The Dream Syndicate’s first full-length; they released an EP earlier in ’82. I love this whole record, but my top pick is the Velvet Underground-meets-garage groover “That’s What You Always Say.” I also really like the all-out rocker “Then She Remembers” and the wild, epic title track “The Days of Wine and Roses.”

Then in September 2021 we saw Wynn perform solo at a small boutique in our neighborhood, which was intimate and amazing; he played some Dream Syndicate songs and told many stories about his time with the Dream Syndicate as well as other bands and recording experiences from the past 40 years.

The Smiths “Strangeways, Here We Come” released 35 years ago yesterday, September 28th, 1987 (or possibly 30 years ago today, the 29th, might depend on US or UK). Strangeways was The Smiths’ final studio album release and both Morrissey and Johnny Marr state they feel it was their best. It went gold in the UK within days of its release, hitting #2 on the album charts; it made it to #55 on the US charts. While still very much full of The Smiths sound, there is a bit less jangly guitar, a few more nods to outright rock (especially the excellent “I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish,” the second single release from the album which reached #23 in the UK). Morrissey plays piano on “Death of a Disco Dancer,” another departure from all of their other recordings. However, many of the tracks are very typical Smiths, especially “Girlfriend In a Coma,” which has a lightly bouncing and delightful melody behind Morrissey’s darkly humorous lyrics (“Girlfriend” was the first single released, hitting #13 in the UK) and while “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” has a deeper and more pronounced bass line than many Smiths songs, it is still a bit jangly and has Morrissey-level depression.

Johnny Marr quit The Smiths not long before the release of Strangeways (quickly followed by Morrissey’s announcement of a solo career) and it’s easy to project a requiem quality onto many of the songs. “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” has the tempo of a funeral dirge, complete with dramatic strings. Loss and death permeates “I Won’t Share You” and “Death at One’s Elbow” (though the latter is accompanied by a rather gleeful harmonica) and bitterness about endings drips from Morrissey on “Unhappy Birthday.”

For a variety of not very good reasons, Strangeways is my least-listened to Smiths album. Even though its release was just slightly one year after The Queen is Dead – which I was utterly bonkers for the summer of ’86 – in not untypical teenage style I had pretty much moved on from The Smiths into harder stuff and ignored the LP for years.

The Mod Violets “The Mod Violets” 2018. Violet Groove Records. Jangly power pop from Milwaukee. Despite being pretty good friends with the bass player and having this LP for awhile now, our first opportunity to see The Mod Violets play live came this past weekend. They played their set at Puddler’s 2nd Annual Block Party in our Bay View neighborhood from a flatbed truck; it was a lovely afternoon with cheap drinks, good friends (but not too crowded) and perfect summer weather.

The Mod Violets is according to their own description “Musically complex, [with] lyrically deep songwriting and a crack rhythm section.” I agree! One of my favorite lines comes from the song “Mirror” – “Let me be your mirror [nice Velvet nod there] so I can show you the hippest chick that’s in this one-horse town.” Musically the bulk of the songs are extra jangly, super-melodic with lots of good harmonization; as their name suggests, they are heavily influenced by 60’s sounds so there’s a fair bit of garage and psychedelia swirling around. My top tracks include the opener “Playground,” the twangy psychedelic rocker “Not Come Back,” the extra-hallucinogenic and exotic “Control” and the soaring, harmonic loud-quiet-loud “In Your Window.”

And just because I can, here’s a shot from the Block Party that really is peak Bay View: our friend John (who played later that evening with Two and a Half Stars) and local personality The Milverine (google it).

Johnny Marr “Spirit Power & Soul (Vince Clarke Remix)” Record Store Day 2022 limited edition release, 12″ single, pink vinyl. A perfect pairing: the ex-Smiths guitar master and the ex-Depeche Mode/Yazoo synthpop powerhouse together at last. “Spirit Power & Soul,” released at the end of August 2021, was the lead single from Marr’s latest LP Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 (2022). The track was already dance-floor ready but Clarke’s remix has brought it to another level, adding in his best 80’s dark synthpop sound and a heavier industrial-dance beat. The flipside has the lovely guitar-forward “Human,” with whispers of Marr’s signature jangle and Smiths-melancholia. “Human” is the last track on Fever Dreams Pts 1-4.

The Smiths “Louder Than Bombs” released 35 years ago (yesterday) on March 30th, 1987. Rough Trade/Sire Records. Louder Than Bombs is a comp of Smiths singles and b-sides released for the US market on Sire; Rough Trade released it in the UK in May ’87. It hit #62 in the US and went to #38 in the UK. In ‘87 the UK singles compilations Hatful of Hollow and The World Won’t Listen were only available on pricey imports so this US release has much of that same material, plus cuts from The Smiths.

So many of my favorite Smiths songs! From Record 1, Side A: “Sheila Take a Bow” (1987, #10 UK; its video a Top of the Pops performance because Morrissey didn’t show at the scheduled video taping), “Shoplifters of the World Unite” (’87, #12 UK) and one of its b-sides “London.” From Record 1, Side B: “Panic” (1986, #11 UK) and its anthemic chorus “hang the dj,” “Shakespeare’s Sister” (1985, #26 UK), the perfect Johnny Marr jangled “William, It Was Really Nothing” (1984, #17 UK), “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” (1984, #10 UK), and “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby” an unreleased single that supposedly was inspired by a record exec’s answer to Morrissey’s question about why the Smiths hadn’t been made a larger priority at their label. From Record 2, Side C: “Ask” (1986, #14), “These Things Take Time” (b-side to “What Difference Does it Make?”) and “Rubber Ring” (b-side to “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side”). From Record 2, Side D: The Smiths’ first ever single “Hand in Glove” (1983, #3 UK), “Stretch Out and Wait” (b-side to “Shakespeare’s Sister”) and “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” (b-side to “William, It Was Really Nothing”). The only bummer track on the double album set is “Golden Lights” (b-side to “Ask”), a sappy and saccharine little swinger that really could have been left off. However, its appearance (and the ensuing eye-rolling) on The Simpsons makes it all worth it.

Johnny Marr “Fever Dreams Pts 1-4” 2022. Limited edition white vinyl, double LP. Johnny Marr’s fourth solo album, released just a few days ago, is brilliant! We got a great sneak peek with the EP Fever Dreams Pt. 1 that he released in Fall ’21; all four songs from that EP make up Side A of Pts 1-4 including a couple that are some of my top picks: the single “Spirt Power & Soul” and “Ariel,” a very Smith-ish track. I’m just now on my first listen of Parts 2-4 and with the sheer volume of sounds, textures and number of songs I have a lot more listens in my future. But for now I’m smitten with “Lightening People,” which is dark and gothy with shimmering bright overlays of melody; the hard-driving glam-strutting “Sensory Street;” “Counter-Clock World” with its psychedelic guitar riff and anthemic chorus, the funk-tronic “Ghoster” and the swirl of “The Whirl.” The last track, “Human,” is sad but not Smiths-miserable, more sweetly and emotionally expansive, simply lovely.
