The Blind Shake are an awesome noisy garage punk band from Minneapolis that we’ve seen a few times, though not recently (pandemic and I’m pretty sure one of the Blaha brothers that form the nucleus of the group moved to another state). The two tracks on their 7″ are “I Shot All the Birds” (a darkly sinister noise rocker) from their 2016 album Celebrate Your Worth and “Tar Paper” (messy, noisy, growling and tribal with tons of distortion) from the 2015 LP Fly Right.

Afraid of the House has a lot of the same qualities as The Blind Shake’s material: buzzy lo-fi guitars, a chugging rhythm, noise rock distortion and a certain tense level that I described in an earlier blog post as “the bastard child of Jimi Hendrix and Jack White on a cocktail of ‘shrooms and amphetamines” (I was a little tipsy at a Blind Shake show when I wrote that). Despite that level of intensity, the flavor overall is a bit lighter, playful at times even. While the tracks “When You’re Down,” “Grow Like Rabbits” (my favorite on the album) and “Psychic Killer” are ferocious in the Blind Shake spirit, other songs like “I’m Just Sitting Here,”  “Back Home” and “Lonely Man” are almost bouncingly bright (in comparison. It’s still pretty intense), reminding me of some Sonic Youth songs from the early 90′s: noise rock with a nod to pop melody. I also dig the lo-fi psychedelic touches like the track “Not Even War” and the mini-instrumental “Green Curtains.”

“I Shot All the Birds” appears on The Blind Shake’s 2016 Celebrate Your Worth (Goner Records). It’s sneering psych-surf, menacingly dense and swampy with a muscular industrial beat. “Tar Paper,” from the 2015 Fly Right LP (Slovenly Recordings) is a brutal stomper, a wall of sound draped with a cacophony of angry reverb.

Besides “I’m Not an Animal,”  Live in San Francisco features another favorite of mine from their 2011 release Seriousness: “Hurracan,” as well as the title track, “Seriousness.” Also included are songs from the 2013 Key To a False Door: “Garbage on Glue” and “Porto Alegre;” “Wexford Scramble” from the 2007 album Carmel; and “Young Carnival Waste” from 2014′s Breakfast of Failures.

Opening for The Blind Shake were Milwaukee bands Devils Teeth (who wore all-white outfits in the mode of Captain Stubing from “The Love Boat” – complete with cap!) and Gallery Night. Gallery Night were especially killer: their drummer, Kelsey Kaufman, is outta control amazing. I found a clip of their performance opening for Thee Oh Sees – check it out!

Joe went to see Shadow in the Cracks last week at Acme Records (I didn’t go: too tired and had to stay home with Vault-boy). At the in-store concert he picked up this record, got it autographed while chatting with the guys and took a few snapshots of the show. The Blind Shake will be playing at the Cactus Club later this month and that one I do plan to attend.
