R. L. Burnside “A Ass Pocket of Whiskey” – I had intended to write about this LP last week when it turned 30 years old (released February 6th 1996) and for Jon Spencer’s birthday (February 5 1965) but stuff came up. A Ass Pocket of Whiskey, released on Matador Records, is the great bluesman R.L. Burnside’s 7th studio LP on which he’s backed by Jon Spencer (guitar, lots of “YEAH!” backing vocals), Judah Bauer (on slightly more restrained “yeah” backing vocals, guitar, harmonica, keys) and Russell Simons on drums, plus non-JSBX Kenny Brown on (slide) guitar. I remember my mind being entirely blown by this record in the mid-90’s; JSBX was (and still is) one of my favorite bands and this collaboration was simply epic. “Snake Drive” remains one of my top blues (exploded) songs ever – I’m not positive but fairly certain it is Judah who screams “SNAKE DRIVE” at the end of the track. Absolutely killer guitar and rhythm driven blues. Other top picks include the opener “Goin’ Down South,” Burnside’s rendition of John Lee Hooker’s classic “Boogie Chillin,” the harmonica-forward “Shake ’em On Down” (written by Bukka White though he’s not credited on this album) and the narrative-driven “The Criminal Inside Me” (the lyrics of which include the LP’s title) which is the most JSBX track on the record (or the one that shows JSBX’s inspiration the most?) as at times it’s a dead ringer for JSBX’s classic “Blues X Man” (from 1994’s Orange) except when Jon asks RL for money (“40 nickels) for a bag of potato chips and RL responds that he’s going “kick your ass you sonofabitch.”

Rare weird post in celebration of Mr. Judah Bauer’s birthday today (b. June 18th, 1971). The only instance when JSBX used “Big” in the band title. Our copy still has the Clawfist flyer which states that the tracks on the singles club releases are exclusive to the London-based Clawfist label.

According to the always excellent Pop Catastrophe this 3 track 45’s recordings “are all exclusive to this release. “History of Sex” appears to be a live version whereas “Write A Song” and “Smoke Cigarettes” are both very lo-fi demo-style recordings.” Emphasis on the “very lo-fi.” It’s a hot mess of a release, gloriously ugly, full of warts, squeals and dissonance. A “big” blues explosion for sure. Pop Catastrophe goes on to say about this super-early release that “Crypt Style [released in ’93] and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion [released in ’92] included studio recordings of both “History of Sex” and “Write A Song” but A Reverse Willie Horton [1991] only featured “History of Sex.” The front cover [of the] “Recorded in Person” artwork is also used in the booklet of Crypt Style (CD, JAPAN). On 10 August 2010 all songs from this single were released on the compilation Year One.”

I always like to post an old picture of Judah (I don’t have that many) so here’s one our mutual friend Cristian (in the middle, not sure who the kid on the right is) shared with me awhile back, taken when they were around 11 or 12 years old, so ’82-ish. I’ve shared it before but sharing again because it’s just too adorable.

Jon Spencer “Sick of Being Sick!” 2024. Bronzerat Records, limited edition clear vinyl. It delights me so hard that for 30+ years Spencer still is a bit obsessed with trousers (on Sick of Being Sick! we’ve got “Fancy Pants” but let’s not forget about JSBX era “Bellbottoms” from Orange, “Pant Leg” from Extra Width and “Get Your Pants Off” from Meat + Bone) nor has his healthy ego taken a dive (on “Guitar Champ” he’s still proclaiming he’s Number One! I agree – he is!). Sick of Being Sick! is a short burst of punk blues perfection, with a new, very young backing band: Kendall Wind on bass and Mack Spider Bowman on drums (from the Woodstock NY garage punk band the Bobby Lees – Spencer produced their 2020 album Skin Suit). While Spencer has never lacked for energy, this new gen has him revved up to eleven. We got to catch Spencer with his new band in July down in Chicago – killer show as always! – and I’m fairly certain they played a couple of these new tracks, including the aforementioned “Guitar Champ” and “Fancy Pants.”

Also fantastic are the noisy bluesy lead track “Wrong” (the lyric “I’m sick of being sick” appears here), the extra fuzzy “Out of Place,” and the buzzy “Coulda Been.”

I’ve been streaming Sick of Being Sick! pretty much nonstop for the past week or so, waiting for my record guy to get the vinyl in. There’s a little hidden snippet at the end of Side 2 that does not appear digitally, not really a song, more like a show-closer freakout.

Honeymoon Killers “The Loved, The Lost and the Last” 1991/2022. Bang! Records, limited edition. Today, June 18th, is Judah Bauer’s 53rd birthday (b. 1971). Judah appears on this on this previously unreleased album from the early 90’s along with Jon Spencer and Russell Simins of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, plus Jerry Teel (Chrome Cranks, Little Porkchop, lots more), Lisa Wells (Little Porkchop) and Marcellus Hall (Railroad Jerk). The majority of tracks are covers of blues and blues-based rock, stripped bare and recorded pretty lo-fi. Top covers are The Rolling Stones’ “Who’s Driving Your Plane?,” The Velvet Underground’s “Guess I’m Falling in Love” and Otis Redding’s “Love Man.” There are a few originals too, upon which Judah is playing (he’s not on the aforementioned tracks): “Dead Again” which definitely has Bauer’s chugga-chugga JSBX blues guitar sound, the exploding noise rock’d “Doesn’t Matter” and the messy garage rocker “What’s That?”

“Who’s Drivin’ Your Plane?,” “Dead Again,” “Joe’s House” (another Honeymoon Killers original – Judah play acoustic guitar and organ on this one) and “Love Is All Around” (by The Troggs) were previously released on the Sing Sing (1984 – 1994) compilation and “Murderess In A Purple Dress” appeared on the Scientists tribute album Set It On Fire!.

From the liner notes regarding Side A: “These were songs we played for Peter and Kelly’s wedding. All love songs. This was the only time we were ever a wedding band and this is part of what was going to be our wedding album. Love was in the air and we did the best we could to make the air sound like love.” Side B: “‘Who’s Driving Your Plane” was recorded during the Hung Far Low sessions. This version unreleased until now. The rest of this side is the last session and was recorded at the end of our last European tour. We had been asked to do a song for a Scientists tribute, so the session was mostly for that. I knew this would be the last and this is how it went down.”

And because I always have post at least one old photo (I don’t have that many), here’s one of Judah from 1987 taken by me at our friends’ apartment in Appleton, sorry if you’ve seen it before.

Jukebox Explosion: Rockin’ Mid-90s Punkers! is a compilation of mostly releases from 7″ singles and rarities from the 90’s. We have a fair number of the singles from JSBX’s Jukebox series but a few of the selections on this comp are über-rare or are totally unavailable elsewhere. That would include the tracks “Caroline” and its b-side “Curfew Blues.” The story behind these two tracks is pretty great – to quote directly from the liner notes: “Caroline” – “Independent record label Caroline was the accurately rendered subject of what was originally intended to be the A-side of Jukebox single number three. The single made it as far as the test pressing stage (only four exist) before the humorless pussies at Caroline threw a hissy fit and began to threaten the band and label with legal action. Now this sneering stomper can finally be given a proper release.” From “Curfew Blues” – “This super-charged number was the B-side to the aborted “Caroline” single. Recorded at a VPRO session during a tour of Europe. On the trip, while under the impression that it was a particularly rarified variety of European cheese, Judah happened to eat an entire bar of soap that belonged to the Devil Dogs.” (🤣🤣🧀 – you can take a boy out of Wisconsin but he’ll still look for cheese) Also of note on this comp, though not nearly as hilarious, are the tracks “Naked” (again from the liner notes: “This ultra-frantic monster was the A-side to a limited edition giveaway single, inspired by avid nudist David Yow of the Jesus Lizard, who the Blues Explosion toured with early in their career. 100 copies were pressed and given to the lucky attendees at the Blues Explosion’s Third Anniversary show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey), “Push Some Air” (“Side A of a rare single released in 1995 on the short-lived Brazilian label Barulho del Mal, to coincide with the band’s first tour of Brazil. The single was only available on the band’s merch table, and all copies were sold out by the second date, an outdoor show in Fortaleza. Unfortunately the majority of the pressing was warped and only a handful are presently in playable condition.”) and “Dig My Shit” (“…recorded as a backing track for a planned Blues Explosion appearance on the television program Saturday Night Live. Due to a miscommunication between the band and NBC’s representatives regarding the use of profanity, the whole performance had to be scrapped. The song was later included on an otherwise completely worthless compilation on Matador Records.”). My top tracks, which are still interesting! are “Shirt Jac” (the first In the Red jukebox series, produced by Steve Albini), “Bent” (the B-side to the second jukebox single “Son of Sam“) and “Get With It” (Jukebox single #4, recorded during the Now I Got Worry sessions).

Honeymoon Killers “Kansas City Milkman” 1991. Insipid Records. Sludgy noise rock from Jerry Teel (guitar/vocals; Chrome Cranks, Knoxville Girls, Little Porkchop), Jon Spencer (guitar, trombone!!!; JSBX, Pussy Galore, Boss Hog), Russell Simins (drums; JSBX, Butter O8, SERVICE) and Lisa Wells (bass, vocals; Little Porkchop). The single appears on their ’91 LP Hung Far Low. Side A’s “Kansas City Milkman” is dark and grungy, with some Ministry-esque industrial noise-rock thrown in for good measure. Side B’s “Nothin'” is less beaty, more chaotic noise rock, still really dark and sludgy. While I can’t find a link for “Nothin,'” I did find a shitty-quality concert video from a ’92 Honeymoon Killers show in Germany in which they perform a bit of “Kansas City Milkman” and instead of Jon on guitar, Judah Bauer (JSBX) is playing.

Russell Simins “Public Places” 2000. Grand Royal Records. Today, September 27th, is Russell Simins’ 60th birthday (b. 1962)*. Best known as the drummer for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and now for S-E-R-V-I-C-E, Simins released his lone solo record during the time that the other members of JSBX were also working on side projects (20 Miles, Boss Hog, etc.). Public Places has some really great power pop/indie rock that to me recalls Bob Mould for songwriting. While unabashedly hard pop, the title track “Public Places” is super-catchy, as are “Jim’s Problem” and “World Over.” The slow-rocking ballad “Comfortable Place” also has a Mould feel, especially the vocals. The reviewer on Allmusic finds their Simins comparison with Beck and I don’t necessarily disagree, especially with the instrumentation on tracks like “Don’t You Believe” and “Scope” that have an indie-meets-hip-hop scritchy-scritchy-scratch groove and plenty of computer-generated sounds. There’s a couple of harder tracks, too, like “I’m Not a Model” which apparently appears on the video game “Jet Set Radio Future.” I’m completely ignorant when it comes to any video games made after Pac Man but my teenage son games and sometimes subjects me to video game music on his Spotify. “I’m Not a Model” has that video game background sound, so does “No 90210.” Both have a nü-metal smell that apparently hypes up kids on the shoot ’em up and drive fast platform. Simins is the sole and/or primary writer on Public Places and not only plays drums and sings on most of the tracks, but also plays guitar and keyboards on several songs. Other folks back him up as well of course, the most interesting contribution credited is Bijou and Chyna Phillips’ backing vocals on the folky “No Straight Line.”

About the apron from an article/interview on The Agit Reader with Judah Bauer: “You’ve got to come up with stupid ideas. The apron idea was mine, and I tried to kill it. I thought it was too domestic, but it ended up happening. Maybe that’s savvy, though, because maybe our fanbase is more domesticated now…” It’s funny because it’s true and I have absolutely worn this apron to bake cookies.

Meat + Bone is JSBX’s ninth(ish) LP and, I’ll be honest, one of my less-listened to of their catalog but as a huge fan, it’s still great. The lead track “Black Mold” (which is something I’m unfortunately literally dealing with today) was “pulled…from the Damage [2005] outtakes pile” (Bauer). The rest of the tracks were written in 10 days between July and August 2012 in between Spencer’s touring with Heavy Trash and Bauer’s tour with Cat Power. The record’s title reflects the sound: just the meat and the bone, no fat, no filler: basic (but JSBX is never basic) punk blues. Besides “Black Mold” my top tracks are “Boot Cut” which is raw and funky, the bluesy, buzzy “Ice Cream Killer” and the frenetic “Danger” with its wild and pounding piano and screaming guitar. Warning: the video below for “Black Mold” is beyond disturbing.

Service, based out of Indianapolis, are “post-punk then punk again” and boast an incredible lineup: Russell Simins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) on drums mainly, plus guitar and synths, Jilly Weiss Simins (We Are Hex) on powerhouse vocals, Mitch Geisinger (Shpazz) on guitar, John Zeps (Transgression) on bass, and Sharlene Birdsong (Thee Tsunamis) on synths and guitar.

The music is tense, dark and momentously guitar-rock noisy with just enough pop sensibility to make most of the tracks head-banging and/or ass-shaking. Though it’s been almost three years since we’ve seen them play live, I am pretty sure that many of the songs they performed in Milwaukee in 2019 are on Drag Me.

Drag Me was originally slated for release back around 2018 or 2019 with the announcement of the lead single “Hey” (one of my top picks on the LP). Then in May of 2021 there was another tease of the record coming in the Fall of 2021. But I’m guessing life plus a pandemic and vinyl supply chain issue delayed it til now. Besides “Hey,” I also really love punk howler “Who Are You Anyway?,” the gothically creepy “Two Gurus in Drag” and the crazed organ of “June and Johnny.” Drag Me officially releases on May 7th with their record release show at Square Cat Vinyl in Indianapolis, a great little record store that we’ve been to numerous times for Romanus Fest.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion “Now I Got Worry” released 25 years ago today, October 15th, 1996. Matador Records. JSBX’s fifth LP is one of my top 5 of all of their releases (though I may be guilty of saying that about all of their albums). Wild and noisy punk blues with some of their iconic tracks including “Wail;” Weird Al Yankovic directed and made a cameo in the highly entertaining and hysterical video which includes Spencer popping out of a toilet and Judah and Russell doing the macerana). Other great tracks are “2 Kindsa Love,” “Fuck Shit Up” (a cover originally by Dub Narcotic who they toured with in 2002 – at the show we went to Dub didn’t end up playing because they got there late but did manage to incite a mini-riot and get the club shutdown), “Chicken Dog” (with guest vocals from Rufus Thomas and Mark Ramos Nishita aka Money Mark), “R.L. Got Soul” and “Can’t Stop” which has the greatest – and most truthful – line of all time: “Throw your hands in the air and kiss my ass ‘cause your girlfriend still loves me.” We saw JSBX during the tour for this record at the Barrymore Theater – and got to go backstage after the show – in Madison, WI about a month after its release (Nov. 9, 1996 – as always a huge thank you to pop-catastrophe.co.uk for having such a thorough archive!).
