]]> Kim Wilde “You Keep Me Hanging On” 1987. #1 30 years ago this week in 1987 on the US charts. (It hit #2 in the UK in ‘86 as the second single from the album Another Step). This is a recently acquired 45 (maybe part of the box of singles from our plumber) and whoever bought it helpfully placed the date of that acquisition: June 2, 1987. It’s typical 80′s BIG pop, tinged with new wave influences and a throbbing club beat, but less new wave than Wilde’s first big single, “Kids in America” which made it into the Top 40 in 1981. The b-side to “You Keep Me Hanging On” is the semi-ballad “Loving You,” crammed with world-music flute, ambience and sappy lyrics. Like most 80′s singles that permeated the radio and MTV, I know all the words and have a vague fondness for the song even though I don’t recall absolutely loving it when it was popular. However, it’s catchy as hell and I’ll probably have it stuck in my head the rest of the day.
