Pat & the Pissers “SOIL/America’s Dream” 2022/2019. Romanus Records, on very limited MAGGOT filled vinyl. The grossest record, literally, I’ve ever purchased. Yes, those are actual, real maggots (more specifically, black solider fly larva) and I can barely look at this thing without feeling nauseous. According to my friend and the mad genius behind Romanus Records, Chris Banta: “I made a maggot-filled mockup for a potential client that I cant legally mention at this time. They said no to the maggots as I continued to search for real black flies in their fly state. The idea was simply too good, too gross not to use. I talked to Pat And The Pissers and asked, ‘does your new LP have anything at all to do with bugs?’ They said the artwork on SOIL literally has some grub bugs on it, and then we were off….The challenges of making the vinyl work are mostly getting some gross maggots in there while maintaining a balanced record. All of these custom LPs we make are pointless if they can’t actually play. Thankfully, after eight years of experimenting we have a pretty good idea how to make this all work.” (loudersound) And yes, this record does play and the music isn’t nearly as gross as the record itself.

Side A is America’s Dream from 2019, a short, 7-song release from the Indianapolis-based Pat & the Pissers. It has a decidedly political resistance bent lyrically and a mix of classic hardcore punk musically. My top tracks are “Freaks,” which calls to mind the vibe of early 80’s Suicidal Tendencies and the super-short thrasher “So Thick.”

SOIL is Side B, released in 2022. Snotty and speedy punk, not a single track hits the 2 minute mark. My top track from SOIL is “Konner” which happens to be the longest song on the LP – it’s very reminiscent of the mid-80’s hardcore sound with tempo changes, a stellar bass line and a really good hook. I also really like the title track, “Soil,” which is lightning fast and the shortest track (clocking in at just over 50 seconds).

Johnny Marr “Fever Dreams Pts 1-4” 2022. Limited edition white vinyl, double LP. Johnny Marr’s fourth solo album, released just a few days ago, is brilliant! We got a great sneak peek with the EP Fever Dreams Pt. 1 that he released in Fall ’21; all four songs from that EP make up Side A of Pts 1-4 including a couple that are some of my top picks: the single “Spirt Power & Soul” and “Ariel,” a very Smith-ish track. I’m just now on my first listen of Parts 2-4 and with the sheer volume of sounds, textures and number of songs I have a lot more listens in my future. But for now I’m smitten with “Lightening People,” which is dark and gothy with shimmering bright overlays of melody; the hard-driving glam-strutting “Sensory Street;” “Counter-Clock World” with its psychedelic guitar riff and anthemic chorus, the funk-tronic “Ghoster” and the swirl of “The Whirl.” The last track, “Human,” is sad but not Smiths-miserable, more sweetly and emotionally expansive, simply lovely.

The Ergs! “Time and the Season” 2022. Dirtnap Records. Limited edition EP on pink vinyl. Punchy punk power pop, Time and the Season is a quick 4-song EP on 7″, their first release since 2016 (they’ve been around, kinda on again/off again, since 2000). There’s two Ergs original tracks: “Ultimate Falsetto Book” and “Half Empty Strip Mall.” Both are bouncy, clever and snotty. The other two are excellent covers: “Say You’re Sorry,” a great garage rocker originally by The Remains, 1966, and a fairly faithful rendition of “Time of the Season” by The Zombies, 1968 which went to #3 in 1969 and continues to be a pop culture classic. While the lineup for Dirtnap Record’s 22nd anniversary showcase concert in Madison, WI this upcoming June has yet to be finalized, rumor has it that The Ergs! will be there. (That show was supposed to be Dirtnap’s 20th anniversary celebration in the spring of 2020 but, like all things 2020, it was canceled.)

Social Distortion “Poshboy’s Little Monsters” 1981/2019. Poshboy Records/Radiation Records. Limited edition (200) red and white splatter vinyl (Italian pressing). There is quite a bit of backstory to this 6-song EP by California first wave punks Social Distortion, who were teenagers (drummer John Stevenson was only 16!!) when they recorded this session with Poshboy Records’ Robbie Fields. SD’s first single “Mainliner” was originally intended to be a 4-song EP. According to Robbie Fields’ liner notes on Poshboy’s Little Monsters, “…I had promised [Mike] Ness that we would not fight so once there was a minor disagreement over the artwork for the proposed 12” (EP), I dropped the project in favor of the “Playpen“/”Mainliner” 7″ which sported iconic artwork from the band.” So four songs – I believe the other two intended were “Moral Threat” and “All the Answers” which they re-recorded for their first LP Mommy’s Little Monsters – became two in ’81. The other two songs SD recorded with Fields were “1945” and “Moral Threat.” This version of “1945″ appeared on the 1981 comp Rodney on the ROQ and Posh Boy included both “Playpen” and “Justice for All” on its 1981 The Future Looks Bright comp. All six songs would eventually be compiled on Mainliner (Wreckage From the Past) in 1995, Time Bomb Recordings. And that is not an exhaustive list of alternate recordings, record labels and compilations that these songs would take between 1981 and 1995 – it gets complicated and very confusing!

Maness Brothers “God Bless the Maness Brothers” 2020. Romanus Records. Very limited edition (50 copies) glow-in-the-dark sand-filled vinyl. Heavy, heavy heavy blues from Missouri. God Bless is the two-piece siblings’ second LP (their first, self-titled, from 2017 is also on Romanus as is their 2012 EP Grief Factory; Maness Brothers were one of the first bands to release on the Romanus label). Jake and David are both pretty young (late 20’s/early 30’s) but they channel the spirit of old soul classic and gritty blues. That classic sound is infused with Jake’s boundless energy on his relentlessly crashing drums and David’s hard-driving guitar; they trade off on vocals. They also put on a hell of a show; we’ve seen them perform a few times, most recently in August of 2019 at Romanus Fest in Indianapolis (I’m actually not sure they’ve played out much since then beyond a handful of local Missouri shows, though I feel like maybe we caught a livestream in 2020 when that was still a “fun” pandemic thing to do). Here’s a couple of photos from that Romanus Fest set (if you squint you can see juke-joint rockers CATL in the background in the second picture).

Most of God Bless is fast, blues rock’n’roll and those are definitely my top tracks: “Pain,” “Tupelo,” “Drive Me” and the high energy gospel meets wild slide guitar “Lord Thank You Very Much” but they can also slow it down big-time and go spiritual like on “Dip My Sins (In the River).”

Amyl and the Sniffers “Comfort to Me” 2021. Limited edition colored vinyl, ATO Records. Released just a couple of days ago (September 10th), Australia’s Amyl and the Sniffers second LP is my most anticipated release of the year and it definitely does not disappoint. They are, hands-down, the BEST new punk group around. We were supposed to see them in May of 2020 (cancelled), then again in October (cancelled). Thankfully we got to see them back in July of 2019 in a super-small local club and it was pure awesome insanity.

Comfort to Me is hard, fast, balls-to-the-wall fury, full of snarl and speed-metal shredding. I can feel the sweat and swirl of the pit even as I sit alone at my computer. My top tracks are “Freaks to the Front” (I’m already anticipating the call-to-arms at the next Amyl show we go to), the angriest song about road tripping ever: “Hertz,” “Capital” (some serious Motorhead vibes on this one), the 200mph “Don’t Need a Cunt (Like You to Love Me)” and “Laughing.”

I’m not sure if all of the vinyl editions include it, but our gatefold limited edition release includes a 16-page “CTM Zine” full of notes, band photos, and an…interesting self-portrait by singer Amy Taylor. There’s even a couple of recipes, like one for Rock n Roll/Bachelor “Spag Bol” (spaghetti for one…Eat until ya munt ya dirty dog).

X “Alphabetland” 2020. Fat Possum Records. Rough Trade white vinyl exclusive, limited edition of 400 copies. X’s first LP with the original lineup (John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake and Billy Zoom) since 1985 (!!!!). Released digitally in April 2020, the vinyl came out almost exactly one year ago from today on Aug. 29th 2020 (it hit the UK’s Record Store chart at #7 the last week of August ‘20, the first time X ever charted) and it’s taken me that long to break the seal and throw it on the turntable. What the hell was wrong with me to take so long??!! It is…amazing. They sound as strong and fast as they did on their groundbreaking debut in 1980. It’s tight tight tight (Bonebrake!), the guitar riffs are fast and punky (Billy Zoom!) and Exene’s and John’s voices still blend perfectly. I’m hard-pressed to pick top tracks because every single song is fantastic, but to narrow it down at least a little: the title track/opener “Alphabetland,” “Water & Wine,” the insane “Delta 88 Nightmare” (recorded in 2019 and released as a single backed with “Cyrano DeBerger’s Back,” before a new album was even planned) and the punk-ripper “Star Chambered.”

Our vinyl edition came with a two-sided poster: one side with the album cover and the other with the liner notes by author and musician Willy Vlautin.

Injecting Strangers “Patience, Child” 2014/2021, Romanus Records (Crypt Collection), very limited edition (50 copies), splatter colored vinyl. Patience, Child, the debut album from Cincinnati’s indie pop band Injecting Strangers, came out in 2014 as a digital-only release. It’s danceable, super-fun indie pop, weird and hilarious. I had never heard of the band but with my goal to have at least one variant of every Romanus record, I jumped at the chance to have a copy, the label’s first from their new Crypt Collection. My favorite tracks are the campy, psycho-surf “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (In Space),” “Lucky” (with the catchy chorus “I’m a lucky little fucker”), the creepy yet bouncy “Haunted Heavens” (which will fit nicely on a Halloween playlist; Cincinnati’s City Beat reviewer has this to say about the track: “It’s like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” filtered through Queen, Public Image Limited and The Nightmare Before Christmas and then re-filtered through a modern Indie Rock mindset”) and the 70′s-ish glam hard rocker “Shooter Upper.”

DVG’s debut album, originally released on cassette (Burger Records). Fuzzy garage punk with grungy riot grrrl and psycho-surf energy (Hole’s drummer Patty Schemel was in the band and performs on the record), Street Venom is as fantastic as DVG’s subsequent releases. “Sanitarium Blues,” one of my favorite tracks, is about singer/keyboardist Bonnie Bloomgarden’s stint in an actual sanitarium. From her Instagram: “When I was a kid, I ended up in a mental institution! I eventually found out that I am bipolar and extremely empathetic. Life just got too intense/scary to know how to deal with alone! I didn’t know how to get help or that help would work.” Other top tracks include the buzzy garage ass-shakers “Shadow” and “Girlfriend.” This reissue/deluxe version includes two songs not on the original 2014 cassette release but were a limited edition 7″ single in 2015: “Electric High” and “Gettin’ Hard” and both are an excellent addition to the LP.

“American Noise Vol. 2″ 2019. Dirtnap Records. Limited edition (500 copies). Comp soundtrack from The Smart Studios Story documentary (2016) that chronicled Butch Vig’s recording studio in Madison, WI. It still blows my mind that the punk/grunge/noise rock bands on this LP were recording basically down the street from where I lived in Madison – most of the recordings are from 1989-1992 – while at the University. These include Wisconsin bands like Die Kreuzen (“Gone Away” from Cement, Touch and Go Records, 1991) and Killdozer (“Lupus” from Twelve Point Buck, Touch and Go Records, 1989), Wisconsin-adjacent like The Cruckifucks from Michigan (“Wisconsin” from Wisconsin, Alternative Tentacles, 1987), Laughing Hyenas, also from Michigan (“Wild Heart” from Life of Crime, Touch and Go Records, 1990) and Urge Overkill from Chicago (“Faroutski” from Americruiser, Touch and Go Records, 1990). It blows my mind that TAD was in Madison recording “Jack” (from 8-Way Santa, Sub Pop Records, 1991), same with Australia’s Cosmic Psychos “Dead Roo” (from Blokes You Can Trust, Amphetamine Reptile, 1991). Those two tracks, especially Cosmic Psychos, are my favorites on the comp. Also included are old-school alt rockers Young Fresh Fellows (“Sittin’ on a Pitchfork” from Electric Bird Digest, Frontier Records, 1991) and a big-label inclusion (Columbia Records): Gumball (“Accelerator” from Super Tasty, 1992). Balancing out that is a track by The Singing Irishman (“Balloon Man”) which was self-released, not on any album with a vague 1980′s recording date and basically has no presence anywhere except for this record. It’s super-weird and you’ll have to get the album to hear it.
