Jack White “Live: The Supply Chain Issues Tour” 2022. Third Man Records, Third Man Vault # 54. Last night Jack White performed a surprise show at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. We were not there, though we had the opportunity to go with our Vault membership. I probably would have scored tickets, too: even though they sold in out in a couple of minutes, one of my talents is securing exclusive, limited-access tickets, records etc. But our kid had a high school orchestra concert last night and we’ve missed far too many already (because of travel, a global pandemic, a couldn’t-miss 7 Seconds show, etc.). So being good parents, we skipped seeing Jack White in an intimate venue just 90 minutes or so from our house.

We did see Jack White on The Supply Chain Issues Tour here in Milwaukee in August and heard a lot of what’s on this 3-LP release, one in blue, one in white and one in black vinyl. As always, it is gorgeous with high production value and quality vinyl, printing and packaging. Also included is a 7″ of “Tip From You To Me” which I’ll write about separately. The live tracks are pulled from a variety of shows throughout the tour and the world: Germany, France, London, Vegas, Chicago, Austin, Detroit and more. None from the Milwaukee show, unfortunately.

Disk One is a collection of live tracks all from White’s 2022 release Fear of the Dawn. Some of the best are the hit “Hi-De-Ho,” “Taking Me Back” and particularly raucous and ass-shaking renditions of “What’s the Trick” performed in Frankfurt, Germany and “That Was Then (This is Now)” from Zurich Switzerland. Disk Two is a track-for-track performance of Entering Heaven Alive, performed on July 22nd, 2022, the day of the record’s release, in London at Union Chapel. Like the record, the acoustic(ish), folky show contrasts with the harder blues garage of Fear of the Dawn. Disk Three is super-interesting: it’s a mix of covers and spontaneous compositions. Some of the best covers include The Stooges “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” The Monks “I Hate You” and Willie Dixon/Bo Diddley’s “Diddy Wah Diddy.” The most surprising is White’s rendition of Black Flag’s “Nervous Breakdown.” It’s really hard to believe some of the off-the-top-of-his-blue-head songs were actually made up on the spot. “Gordie Howe Bridge” (performed in Detroit) is simply kicking and “I’m Running in Brooklyn Because I’ve Got Nowhere Else to Go” (obviously played in Brooklyn) is a killer punk blues.

I haven’t clicked through to see it (you have to create an account and I’m not willing to do that) but the show is available to view here:

Here’s a link to his concert in Paris that includes the “Hi-De-Ho” performance on The Supply Chain Issues Tour.

The Blind Shake “Live at Third Man Records” 2017. 7″ single, Third Man Records. This past weekend we headed to Nashville and of course hit Third Man (and dropped a large chunk of cash), picking up this single among many other records, t-shirts and other assorted swag. Sometimes we have amazingly awesome luck: we popped back in a second time and our friend, a Nashville resident and the drummer/vocalist for Volk, happened to be working (we didn’t know she worked there). The store was pretty slow and none of the execs were in so she gave us a private tour of the back area at Third Man which includes Jack White’s office (he wasn’t there), a super-swanky lounge area that doubles the green room for bands when there are performances, the warehouse where all Third Man merchandise is stored and shipped from, plus the famous Blue Room where bands perform and record their “Live at Third Man” releases. Absolutely no photos are allowed, ever, in the lounge and office area but photos are allowed in the Blue Room and the other areas. As you can see, it really is quite blue:

The Blind Shake are an awesome noisy garage punk band from Minneapolis that we’ve seen a few times, though not recently (pandemic and I’m pretty sure one of the Blaha brothers that form the nucleus of the group moved to another state). The two tracks on their 7″ are “I Shot All the Birds” (a darkly sinister noise rocker) from their 2016 album Celebrate Your Worth and “Tar Paper” (messy, noisy, growling and tribal with tons of distortion) from the 2015 LP Fly Right.

Jack White “Live at Third Man Records” 2018. Vault Package #37, triple LP on black, blue and white vinyl. I’ve been hesitant to open this last Third Man Records Vault subscription package because of my reaction to Jack White’s latest LP Boarding House Reach but since Package #38 is set to arrive in the mail any day now, I figure I should catch up. Live at Third Man comes from two Jack White concerts, in Nashville at Third Man headquarters on March 16th and in Detroit at Class Corridor on April 18th, both intimate venues and the sonic warmth from these small spaces is evident in the music’s recording and the sound from the enthusiastic crowds.

Live at Third Man Records has a mix of tracks from White’s Boarding House Reach, Blunderbuss and Lazaretto, the 2017 single “Battle Cry” and a few White Stripes songs. Thankfully the live performance vehicle prevented White from a shit-ton of noodling and limited his weird experimentation (though there is still a bit of that courtesy of two keyboards) so the songs from Boarding House Reach are more tolerable than they are on the original. Those songs include “Over and Over and Over,” “Corporation,” “Why Walk a Dog?,” “Connected By Love,” “Ice Station Zebra,” “Hypermisophoniac” and “Respect Commander.” From Blunderbuss: “Blunderbuss,” “Love Interruption,” “Sixteen Saltines” and “Missing Pieces” which ends with a long diatribe against the lies told by the president of the US. From Lazaretto is just the title track “Lazaretto” (too bad, I really love several songs from that LP). Of course my favorite tracks on Live at Third Man are the White Stripes songs: “Wasting My Time,” “Hello Operator” (which starts out with an awesome audience sing-along), “Fell In Love With a Girl,” “Catch Hell Blues,” “Little Bird,” “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” “I’m Slowly Turning Into You” and “Seven Nation Army.”

The package is deluxe, like most Vault packages tend to be (especially the ones featuring White) with super-high quality vinyl and record packaging. The gatefold is die-cut with mix-and-match artwork from the record sleeves to “provide fans with hours upon hours of flip-flopping fun” (LOL, really it took like 5 minutes to do this). The package also has three 8×10 photos from White’s live performances featuring Jack along with band members Dominic Davis (bass), Quincy McCrary (keyboards), Carla Azar (drums) and Neal Evans (keyboards) and a giant Jack White logo flag. I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do with that.

Dex Romweber Duo “Live at Third Man Records” 2010. Third Man Records. Roots rock/rockabilly revival with deep scratch Cash vocals. Dex, formerly of the influential (if not commercially successful), Flat Duo Jets, and his sister Sara, former drummer of Let’s Active, team up for a live performance of bluesy, surfy and country-infused songs at Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville, recorded live to tape on February 4th, 2010. Especially manically surfy is the instrumental “Curse of the Little Bastard,” which Dex introduces as being named after James Dean’s car. “Homicide,” which would appear on their 2011 release Is That You in the Blue? is a cover of Myron Lee’s classic rockabilly tune. “Is It Too Late?” is a twangy weeper ballad off of the 2009 album Ruins of Berlin. “Grey Skies” and “Love Letters” also appear on Live at Third Man but sadly Cat Power (Chan Marshall) does not feature on “Love Letters” as she does on the studio release.

Run off grooves: Side A – “That guys gotta stop. Hell see us” (I think a missing apostrophe?) Side B – “Twas a rainy February night”

The Kills “Live at Third Man Records” recorded live on October 10, 2012. Third Man Records. Today, November 23rd, is Kills’ singer Alison Mosshart’s birthday (b. 1978). She is also the singer for Jack White’s supergroup The Dead Weather. We picked up this “live to acetate” album when the Third Man Rolling Record store came through last spring.

The live record showcases the band’s bluesy sparse garage punk, Mosshart’s cut with a razor blade sultry vocals front and center, backed with Velvet Underground-inspired droning beats and guitar. Songs on the album span back to their earlier releases including from Keep on Your Mean Side (“Kissy Kissy”), the 2008 album Midnight Boom (“Tape Song”) and 2011′s Blood Pressures (“Future Starts Slow,” “Heart is a Beating Drum,” “Baby Says” and “The Last Goodbye”). My favorite track is the slow-jamming New York Dolls-esque grooving “DNA” from Blood Pressures.

Run-off groove etchings:

Side A – “Dr. Groove is in the house!”

Side B – “Is it live and direct to disk?”

Mudhoney “Live at Third Man Records” recorded live to acetate on Sept. 26 2013. Third Man Records’ Rolling Record Store rolled through Milwaukee earlier this week. We stood in line for about an hour (early April in the midwest is FREEZING) but so worth it to score a few releases like this one (and the folks working the truck were absolutely sweet and lovely, warming our hearts if not our toes).

Five of the tracks from the album are from Mudhoney’s “Vanishing Point” LP, plus a couple of oldies-but-goodies like “Here Comes Sickness” and “When Tomorrow Hits” from their 1989 debut studio album. Also included is a Cheater Slicks cover song, “Ghost.” It’s a raucous live performance, fuzzy and fast like 25+ years ago was just yesterday.

Love that Third Man includes run-off groove etchings! Side 1: Dr. Groove says “crazy sweet.” Side 2: Keeping the Shannons paid.

Who are the Shannons??
