R. L. Burnside “A Ass Pocket of Whiskey” – I had intended to write about this LP last week when it turned 30 years old (released February 6th 1996) and for Jon Spencer’s birthday (February 5 1965) but stuff came up. A Ass Pocket of Whiskey, released on Matador Records, is the great bluesman R.L. Burnside’s 7th studio LP on which he’s backed by Jon Spencer (guitar, lots of “YEAH!” backing vocals), Judah Bauer (on slightly more restrained “yeah” backing vocals, guitar, harmonica, keys) and Russell Simons on drums, plus non-JSBX Kenny Brown on (slide) guitar. I remember my mind being entirely blown by this record in the mid-90’s; JSBX was (and still is) one of my favorite bands and this collaboration was simply epic. “Snake Drive” remains one of my top blues (exploded) songs ever – I’m not positive but fairly certain it is Judah who screams “SNAKE DRIVE” at the end of the track. Absolutely killer guitar and rhythm driven blues. Other top picks include the opener “Goin’ Down South,” Burnside’s rendition of John Lee Hooker’s classic “Boogie Chillin,” the harmonica-forward “Shake ’em On Down” (written by Bukka White though he’s not credited on this album) and the narrative-driven “The Criminal Inside Me” (the lyrics of which include the LP’s title) which is the most JSBX track on the record (or the one that shows JSBX’s inspiration the most?) as at times it’s a dead ringer for JSBX’s classic “Blues X Man” (from 1994’s Orange) except when Jon asks RL for money (“40 nickels) for a bag of potato chips and RL responds that he’s going “kick your ass you sonofabitch.”

The New Pornographers “Mass Romantic” 2000. Limited edition reissue (2021) on red vinyl, Matador Records (originally released on Mint Records). The debut album from the indie “supergroup” that features Neko Case and a bunch of Canadian dudes including founders A.C. Newman (who still was going by Carl when the LP came out and whose songwriting I absolutely adore; he was formerly in Superconductor and Zumpano) and Daniel Bejar (from Destroyer, and if memory serves me from seeing NP several times has or developed severe stage fright and stopped touring with NP awhile back), plus Kurt Dahle (Limblifter), John Collins (The Evaporators) and Blaine Thurier who wasn’t in a band prior but is/was a filmmaker so helped with their videos and played synths. Mass Romantic is excellent indie pop, with lots of complexity while still having a very accessible pop sensibility. The layers of melodies are Beatlesque in quality and the interplay of vocals between Case, Newman and Bejar are stellar. While the record did not chart, it did make several best-of lists for the year/era.

I love the entire album but top picks are the opener/title track “Mass Romantic,” the anthemic-flavored “The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism,” the dense and piano-forward “To Wild Homes,” the Neko-forward “Letter From an Occupant,” and the final track “Breakin’ the Law” which according to Wiki “was taken from [Bejar’s band] Destroyer’s first album We’ll Build Them a Golden Bridge. The group vocals at the end of “Breakin’ the Law” are credited to the Camp Northstar Kids’ Chorus, a reference to the Canadian comedy film Meatballs. The chorus is actually every member of the band singing. Newman stated, ‘I like the fact that people think that it’s a kids’ group … We made ourselves sound like a giant group, but we ended up sounding like little kids. I love the fact that in the Rolling Stone review they mention the chorus of kids. I just think it’s great that people actually believe that, because it’s such a fucking ridiculous thing for a band to do.'”

Railroad Jerk “Railroad Jerk” 1990. Matador Records. Hard-driving, catchy punk blues. “Industrial folk” according to their Discogs description. Their s/t record was the first of four LP’s before disbanding around 1996. We saw Railroad Jerk open for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in ’95 (I think) at the Barrymore in Madison. I have no idea what tracks they performed 30 years ago but likely one or two from this record. The weird “Krismus Time” is the most JSBX-like (though it predates that band) and the band’s “theme song” – “Talking RR Jerk Blues” – comes in a close second with a slow head-banging groove, harmonica and disjointed melodies; just replace singer/guitarist Marcellus Hall’s nasaly vocals with Spencer’s deeper yelp ‘n growl and it could totally have been on one JSBX’s early LP’s. My top tracks are the first two on Side 1 “Don’t Be Jealous” and “Old Mill Stream” (catchy, bluesy punk) and one Side 2 the killer ass-shaking “Participant.”

For whatever reason, Railroad Jerk isn’t really available broken down by tracks (except for “Talking RR Jerk Blues”) but you can listen to the entire album here and there a full show recording from a 1990 show at the Pyramid Club in New York City where they perform several songs from the album including “Don’t Be Jealous,” “99 Miles,” “Old Mill Stream,” “Participant,” “Glamorous Bitch,” “Krismus Time,” “Talking RR Jerk Blues,” and “I’m Not Mad.”

Chrome Cranks “Chrome Cranks” 1994. PCP Entertainment (Matador Records distribution). Noisy punk blues featuring former Jon Spencer collaborator Jerry Teel (Honeymoon Killers). Current(ish) and frequent(ish) Spencer collaborator Bob Bert (Pussy Galore, Jon Spencer & the Hitmakers, plus Sonic Youth) joined a year after Chrome Cranks release, in 1995 (the first gig of an earlier iteration of Chrome Cranks was as an opener for Pussy Galore.) There’s a good, brief bio of the band here (though hard to read) that lists the history and chronology of the band and its members. The s/t album was Chrome Cranks first full-length; it’s loud and lo-fi, rattly and rocking and, though formed in metropolis Cincinnati in ’88 and stationed in uber-urban NYC during the 90’s, it’s also infused with country blues strumming, some whooping and hollering (see “Driving Bad“) giving it a psychobilly bent – the spooky “Eight-Track Mind” would feel at home on a Cramps album. My top picks are the garagey opener “Dark Room,” the raucous punk’d out “Drag House,” the Hendrix-ish “Doll in a Dress,” plus the ass-shakers “Stuck in a Cave,” “Lo-End Buzz” and the vinyl-only closer “Party’s Over.”

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion “Extra Width” released 30 years ago today, May 24th, 1993. Matador Records. JSBX’s third release (the first two, Crypt Style and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, both came out in ‘92) and their first to really get funky, infusing punk blues and soul into a danceable R&B beat on ass-shakers like “Afro,” “Soul Typecast,” and “Hey Mom” and sexy groovers like “Train #2″ (Trains #1 and #3 appeared on an In The Red Records single release in ‘94) and “The World of Sex.” One of my favorite – and funniest – lyrics is from “Pant Leg” – “Take a whiff up my pant leg, honey-baby/Take a whiff up my pant leg, child/Take a whiff up my pant leg, baby baby baby/Take a whiff up my pant, get down.” (I think Spencer really likes pants: see “Bellbottoms,” “Get Your Pants Off,” “Boot Cut” etc.)

I saw JSBX for the first time about a month after Extra Width‘s release, on June 19th, 1993 in Madison, WI. (Thanks to the always excellent pop-catastrophe.co.uk for the exact date as my memory from 30 years ago = hazy). The club, O’Cayz Corral (long burned down), was loosely packed, mostly with friends from – or formerly from – Appleton, WI to see Judah Bauer. It was a very small venue and small show: the band wasn’t well-known at this point, especially in the Midwest. But a bunch of Judah’s family and friends were there, including his brother Donovan, who I hung out with at the bar. After the show Russell came over by us and was looking for a place to crash for the night so I introduced to him to a friend of mine, John W., who had an extra couch (Russell, in a whisper, “Is this guy OK, like not weird?” I assured him that John was indeed not weird). Russell stayed there and I popped over in the morning to bring breakfast and nab a copy of the new album (I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t buy one at the show) which they threw on the record player. The other recollections I have from old JSBX shows (having a few opportunities to be backstage or, in the case of the O’Cayz show: no backstage, just a little recombobulation corner) were Spencer’s extreme quiet and reserve offstage, basically looking exactly like the cover of “Extra Width,” but given the guy’s amazing stage energy and outlandish bravado, I’m guessing he saved it all for the audience. More recently with his solo/HITmakers tours, Jon has been far more outgoing and engaging, happy to pose for ridiculous selfies and sign records.

Pressed for time (they had to skedaddle to their show at The Sylvee in Madison that evening), Daniel and Fischel played just three acoustic tracks, two from their 10th studio LP Lucifer on the Sofa (#38 US, #92 UK, #4 US Alternative and Independent charts). Both are my top picks from the LP: “The Hardest Cut” and “Wild.” (I also really like “On the Radio” and the dreamy “Astral Jacket.”)The other song they performed was “Do You,” a single that appears on their 2014 album They Want My Soul.

Despite some guitar-tuning issues, the mini-show was really great and included an interview with 88.9’s Dori Zori. They discussed a broad range of topics that included the sound of Lucifer on the Sofa (“a feeling of being watched while it was made,” “a record that’s playing in a honky tonk bar”), trying to finish writing, editing and recording the record during the pandemic, and influential MTV videos from the past (Prince’s “Kiss” and “When Doves Cry”). You can listen to the 20-minute or so radio session here.

Kim Gordon “No Home Record” 2019. Matador Records. Today, April 28th, is Kim Gordon’s 68th birthday (b. 1953) so I’m spinning her first solo album (after the demise of Sonic Youth 2011 she recorded a record with Body/Head, comprised Gordon and Bill Nace, and Glitterbust – Gordon and Alex Knost). No Home Record is industrial-tinged experimental noise rock: lots of distortion, pounding in-your-face beats, discord and challenge. It charted in the UK, reaching #79 (and went to #29 on the Scottish charts – I didn’t realize Scotland had their own ratings) and though a few singles were released, I don’t think any of those charted. One of those singles is my top track: “Murdered Out” which is probably the most accessible song on the LP – it’s industrial and full of fuzzed distortion but also fairly danceable, as is “Hungry Baby” (another single). “Air BnB,” another single, amuses me as the Air BnB concept was the initial inspiration for the album (that’s where she met the album’s producer, Justin Raisen) (also the video is hilarious). “Don’t Play It” is alt-psychedelic hypnotic and “Cookie Butter,” besides having just the best name ever, is waaaayyy out there, epic in length with a teletype beat and Gordon kinda whisper-shouting punctuated stacato’d lyrics finished with grinding geared guitar.

Gordon continues to be just. so. cool. (inner sleeve photo from No Home Record)

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion “Orange” released 25 years ago today, October 12th, 1994. Matador Records, silver vinyl. Tonight we’re catching JSBX’s drummer Russell Simins’ band S-E-R-V-I-C-E at Cactus Club in Milwaukee. We saw them last month at our neighborhood street party, Bay View Bash, and back in May 2017 in Indianapolis at Hi-Fi Indy and they are amazing. Here’s a couple of shots from those shows.

Orange, my favorite JSBX record and their third or fourth (depending upon how you count the first two releases from 1992) LP, is at times sparse, chaotic, funky, punk, bluesy but always amazing. The lead track, “Bellbottoms” swells with strings and a funked out groove before hitting the staccato’d “bellbottoms” anthem. The song inspired Edgar Wright to write the 2017 movie Baby Driver, the soundtrack to which was nominated for a Grammy (the song “Chase Me” in the movie is a remix of “Bellbottoms” by Danger Mouse featuring Run the Jewels and Big Boi). “Wright laid in his bedroom listening to the song on repeat, visualizing a car chase set to “Bellbottoms.” He also started coming up with the idea of a character: a getaway driver for a bank heist, who cannot do his job properly without the right music playing.” (IndieWire) “Ditch” is hip-shaking sexy and “Dang” has fantastic, crazed harmonica solo by Judah, matched by Jon Spencer’s insane theremin. The first of two excellent instrumentals on Orange comes next: “Very Rare” slows down the beat to a hypnotic rhythm overlayed with Spencer’s signature guitar twang. “Sweat” is iconic JSBX giving us the classic line “That’s the sweat of the Blues Explosion!” “Cowboy” is weirdly mangled country-western (not my favorite track on the album) but the title track “Orange” returns to the slinky JSBX groove (Spencer name-drops ‘Star Trek’ and manages to make even that sexy). Side B leads off with “Brenda” with Spencer singing longingly, just a little too high out his range, for a girl and her money. “Dissect” is thick with musical chaos and “Blues X Man” is a “12-bar back-country roadhouse blues and back-alley back-seat eros to Lower East Side boasting about the Blues Explosion’s musical virility. It begins sparse and skeletal before adding a female backing chorus and DJ turntablism, turning traditionalism upside down and scraping country and city down to their nubs in order to make everything bleed.” (Allmusic) “Full Grown” is balls-out insanity beginning with the line “Baby baby you sure like to fuck FUCK!” and “Flavor” is hilarious, rattling off all the cities where the Blues Explosion is number one and the band gets Beck on the phone to croon out “flavor.” (The remix of “Flavor” is even better, featuring Beck and Mike D in a wicked funny video.) Orange concludes with my favorite JSBX track, the instrumental “Greyhound” which is monstrously awesome, best played at 11.

Liz Phair “Whip-Smart” released 25 years ago today, September 20th, 1994. Matador Records. Whip-Smart is Phair’s second album; it’s not my favorite of hers but the only one we have on vinyl (I prefer her critically acclaimed debut Exile in Guyville and her 1998 release Whitechocolatespaceegg). Whip-Smart was fairly successful, debuting at #27 on the album charts with a Top 10 modern rock hit (#74 on the Hot 100), the danceable, swirly, poppy “Supernova.” It was also nominated for a Grammy in the Best Female Rock Performance category. Phair released two more singles: “Whip-Smart” and “Jealousy” but both failed to gain much traction; “Whip-Smart” made it to #24 on the Modern Rock chart but not the Hot 100 and “Jealousy” did not chart at all. Those are a few of my preferred tracks – though I also like ‘Support System” and the mid-tempo, Sheryl-Crow-ish “Go West.” Not surprisingly based on my general taste, these are the more (mostly) rocking tracks on Whip-Smart, I’m less fond of the super-sad, super-sparse songs like “Chopsticks,” “Shane” and “Alice Springs” where Phair’s monotone voice – which works for the riot-grrrl-lite vibe’d songs – becomes, well, really really monotonous.

Most of the album is lo-fi (with the exception of the highly produced “Supernova”) and, like most of Phair’s writing, Whip-Smart focuses on love and sex: “a rock fairy tale, from meeting the guy, falling for him, getting him and not getting him, going through the disillusionment period, saying ‘Fuck it,’ and leaving, coming back to it.“

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion “Orange” 1994. Matador Records. I’m spinning my favorite JSBX album today because it’s Mr. Judah Bauer’s birthday (b. June 18th, 1971) (thanks to the excellent Pop Catastrophe for the exact date; memory is such a weird thing: I knew Judah’s birthday was in June and I can remember his and other friends’ phone numbers from the 1980′s but can’t remember if I saw a movie that came out last year). Here’s a picture of Judah from 1987:

Orange, JSBX’s third or fourth (depending upon how you count the first two releases from 1992) LP, is at times sparse, chaotic, funky, punk, bluesy but always amazing. The lead track, “Bellbottoms” swells with strings and a funked out groove before hitting the staccato’d “bellbottoms” anthem. The song inspired Edgar Wright to write the recent movie Baby Driver, the soundtrack to which was nominated for a Grammy (the song “Chase Me” in the movie is a remix of “Bellbottoms” by Danger Mouse featuring Run the Jewels and Big Boi). It begins sparse and skeletal before adding a female backing chorus and DJ turntablism, turning traditionalism upside down and scraping country and city down to their nubs in order to make everything bleed.” (Allmusic) “Full Grown” is balls-out insanity beginning with the line “Baby baby you sure like to fuck FUCK!” and “Flavor” is hilarious, rattling off all the cities where the Blues Explosion is number one and the band gets Beck on the phone to croon out “flavor.” Orange concludes with my favorite JSBX track, the instrumental “Greyhound” which is monstrously awesome, best played at 11.
