										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Smoke Free Home &#8220;Bad News&#8221; 2023. SFH Records (self-released), 4 song EP on yellow vinyl from Oshkosh, WI-based dance punks. We finally caught SFH this past weekend at Mile of Music; they&#8217;ve been on my radar for awhile now and I was not disappointed. They are GREAT! Fun and snotty with a delivery reminiscent of 80&#8217;s punk &#8211; think Dead Kennedys but musically low-end only;  Smoke Free Home are a three piece with drums (Alex Lautenschlager), bass (Kevin Sonnleitner) and vocals and it 100% works, in fact I think it took us two or three songs into their performance at Rookies in Appleton to realize there wasn&#8217;t any guitar. The lead track on this 7&#8243; EP &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjbKGWRBV0E&amp;list=RDOjbKGWRBV0E&amp;start_radio=1">Bootstraps</a>&#8221; is hilarious and a mega ass-shaker (extra funny was that singer Jesse Tubeszewski announced his boss was in the audience and the lyrics to this track are somewhat about going to work) and was for sure a highlight of their performance. The second track &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpWV48Qn6VY&amp;list=RDVpWV48Qn6VY&amp;start_radio=1">Run</a>&#8221; has some sophisticated tempos and a darker edge to it but it still has some serious dance vibes. &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl0rfmm-xbM&amp;list=RDhl0rfmm-xbM&amp;start_radio=1">Pressure</a>&#8221; is dancey too, with a lyrical and musical breakdown (literal and figurative) midway through. The last track, &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKd-v-8DXig&amp;list=RDwKd-v-8DXig&amp;start_radio=1">Stones</a>&#8221; has a buzzy grunge flavor, leaning a bit 90&#8217;s/aughts emo-punk (not my jam but it&#8217;s a&#8217;right).</p>

<p>Joe chatted with the band at the merch table after the show (I ran into a guy from high school I haven&#8217;t seen since &#8217;89 so was reliving some of my own 80&#8217;s punk memories with him) &#8211; SFH play out quite a bit but mostly basement shows, to which we are apparently invited but I&#8217;m pretty sure we&#8217;ve aged out of that scene, as fun as it probably would be.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Magnolias &#8220;For Rent&#8221; 1988. Twin/Tone Records. Midwest punky power pop. <em>For Rent</em> is the Minneapolis band&#8217;s second release. High energy with buzzed-out guitars and scratchy yet enthusiastic vocals, <em>For Rent</em> is super-catchy; more so in my opinion than their Minneapolis contemporaries Soul Asylum and The Replacements (sorry!). There&#8217;s a high probability that The Magnolias played some show or other that I went back in the 80&#8217;s in the Fox Valley area; I do know they played with Dead Kennedys in &#8217;85 (a show I was not at) at The Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay. My top picks on <em>For Rent</em> include the rockers &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UnYkjWgptE">Glory Hop</a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy1QIUd7arM">Down &amp; Out</a>&#8221; (excellent shredding solo on this one), the snotty &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pwWW4ont0s">Halfway Down the Road</a>&#8221; and the ass-shaking &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DENrc5WN90">Bring it Back</a>.&#8221;  The Magnolias do occasionally slow down, like on the jangly &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cL5gHnf29k">Gangs In My Town</a>&#8221; though the twanged jangle sound on the mid-tempo &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVEk3FK3Muk">A Little More</a>&#8221; veers a bit too country for my taste.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Static &#8220;Toothpaste and Pills&#8221; (Demos and Live 1978-1981), 2021. Third Man Records. Tonight we&#8217;ll be seeing Midwest hardcore punk OGs Negative Approach (along with 7 Seconds!) so I&#8217;m spinning Negative Approach&#8217;s John Brannon&#8217;s early glam-punk band Static. They were so young that the A-side, a collection of demos, was recorded at &#8220;Mrs. Brannon&#8217;s&#8221; in Grosse Pointe Park, aka his mom&#8217;s basement. According to the liner notes written by Negative Approach&#8217;s Pete Zelewski, by 1979 John&#8217;s mom &#8220;finally had enough of the late night Static rehearsals and parties.&#8221; Listening to the super-raw, loud and down-and-nasty demo tracks like &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxSgQynDa3Y">Punk Nation</a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9YXm2Aopp0&amp;list=PLNyA_2ea_l6zeokhh2b7-_NeY7WBxLOr1&amp;index=3">TV Show</a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsVaxLbG78k">Toothpaste and Pills</a>&#8221; I am more than a bit sympathetic to Mrs. Brannon&#8217;s point of view. It&#8217;s great garage punk in the spirit of The Stooges but the screams, yelps and heavy beats are hardly after-dinner relaxing tracks. &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE7KBvuVvzs&amp;list=PLNyA_2ea_l6zeokhh2b7-_NeY7WBxLOr1&amp;index=4">We&#8217;re So Cheap We&#8217;re Divine</a>,&#8221; the final song on the Demos side of the record, is over-the-top glam silliness, with pounding piano and drunkenly show-tune vocals; it would fit in nicely on a <em>Rocky Horror</em>-like soundtrack. The Live Side is a collection of songs from &#8217;79-&#8217;81 recorded at a Grosse Pointe High School (&#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqfC_Y5-4jo&amp;list=PLNyA_2ea_l6zeokhh2b7-_NeY7WBxLOr1&amp;index=5">Ain&#8217;t No Stranger</a>&#8221; and, fittingly, &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFvSdSiwaKM&amp;list=PLNyA_2ea_l6zeokhh2b7-_NeY7WBxLOr1&amp;index=6">Hight School Riot</a>&#8221; which is less of a song and more a total performance breakdown which finds them regrouping briefly into an impromptu and abbreviated &#8220;Anarchy in the UK&#8221; plus a lot of swearing) and three clubs: Plewa Hall and Nunzios (both in Michigan) and Coronation Tavern (Ontario). The recording quality is pretty shitty &#8211; the acoustics in a high school gym are generally not&#8230;great &#8211; and the club shows aren&#8217;t much better (too bad as &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtBVlLSVdIU&amp;list=PLNyA_2ea_l6zeokhh2b7-_NeY7WBxLOr1&amp;index=9">Video Deficiency</a>&#8221; is a killer track). That said, it&#8217;s a really cool snapshot in the evolution of Midwest proto-punk/glam into what would become a hardcore punk band that is still kicking 40 years later.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Fox Face “End of Man” 2021. Dirtnap Records. Red/black swirled vinyl (exclusive from Green Noise Records). I literally just grabbed this from my porch &#8211; released on January 22nd, I’ve been anticipating Fox Face’s second LP delivery and holy shit does it deliver! Blistering female-forward Milwaukee punk, Fox Face can stand toe-to-toe with their Riot Grrrl foremothers L7, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, etc. We’ve seen Fox Face play around town several times (not recently, obviously) and their record stands up to their excellent live shows; they successfully harness the noise and fury onto vinyl that often is only captured on stage. And there’s been A LOT to be furious about this past year…Fox Face channeled that rage onto so many great tracks that I’m tempted to name every single one. But if I have to choose: “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zd9Y4hootI">SWF</a>” for sure, “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boCEtvSvb5M">Fan the Flames</a>” definitely (shredding guitar solo!). “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GZ5ePF5nqM">Johnson Death Farm</a>” is an ass-shaker, catchy as hell with an excellent bass groove. Then there’s the malicious slow-churn of “We Do Nothing,” the break-neck lead single “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1tyUeFt6Bs">Not Your Home</a>” and the head-banging title track “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TfeaPYmW50">End of Man</a>.”</p>
<p>While probably a bit biased, the reviewer on the <a href="https://store.greennoiserecords.com/products/fox-face-end-of-man">Green Noise Records</a> website totally nails it and is worth quoting here: “…holy fuck, holy fox face, this album rips, ripped out my brain and made my day, scraped my brain from my skull and slapped it on a platter, red and black swirl indeed, stick my head in that batter and call me baked, slap a bow on my ass and call it an early Christmas, these women are obviously not messing around, the goods have been delivered, teeth fang and claw, once bitten twice delighted, welcome to the planet of Fox Face, this is obviously their world, and I’m just happy I get to live on it…As the sleeve art suggests this is a monster from the Rust Belt, impossible to ignore as it thunders into your eardrums, driving riffs into the punk rock, lifting it up on a bottom thick as plate iron and powering forward, shaking like an earthquake.  Take cover, a big one is coming.”</p>

From Chicago, Articles of Faith were on the smart side of hardcore (as well as politically aware and active; singer Vic Bondi went on to become a history professor and front other hardcore/emocore bands) and also musically adept as compared to many of their contemporaries. But it’s still super-fast and super-loud and super-yelly. My top songs are the title track “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-E85Mh5wF8">Give Thanks</a>,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T_kEiiWzXc">Hollow Eyes</a>,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LfKWL3uoOk">Chicago</a>” and “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON9GJeFl8-c">American Dreams</a>.”</p>

Midwest (Indianapolis) 80′s/90′s punks Sloppy Seconds’ first live album <i>No Time for Tuning</i>, recorded at the Emerson Theater in Indianapolis on April 15th, 1995 was originally released on Triple X Records. It’s party-fun-time punk, deliberately controversial, with a lot of irreverence and humor. Like The Ramones with less focus on sniffing glue and more on watching horror movies and porn while getting drunk. The live LP has their “hits” (released through the years on 7″) like their anthem “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7pbLArOCFE">I Don’t Want Be a Homosexual</a>” and “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZjpKdlcYVg">Come Back, Traci</a>” (about Traci Lords) as well as classics like “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBz8NXdCBcg">Steal Your Beer</a>,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnYln--MOCY">The Pop My Dick Song</a>,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM2ju6uUAFE">So Fucked Up</a>,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxXXq9WDCKE">Ice Cream Man</a>” and “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2ken617Wdc">The Kids are All Drunk</a>.” They are quoted as proud to be fat, drunk and stupid. I can’t comment on that, but they are definitely hilarious.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>King Eye &amp; The Squirts “Demonseed” 2017. Drivel Limited Records. We caught Milwaukee’s garage punk/surfy set this past weekend at Mittenfest, an annual outdoor streetfest held in the dead of winter by Burnhearts bar in the heart of our neighborhood. I’ve been meaning to check out King Eye &amp; The Squirts for awhile now &#8211; they’ve been together since 2015 &#8211; as they’ve played with a bunch of other bands that I really like and I recognized at least a couple of the band members. Vocalist/guitarist Steven Look bartends at X-Ray Arcade in Cudahy (where besides seeing shows, I teach punk rock yoga once in awhile) plus I think he’s been in several other bands, and drummer Jesse Buskov also plays in Rexxx, another Milwaukee band (in which my favorite MKE bassist, Sam Reitman from Slow Walker &#8211; who played Mittenfest 2 years ago &#8211;  and like 20 other bands, also plays – Milwaukee is a  small big town).</p>

<p><i>Demonseed</i> is a great, short and punchy album with a warm and lo-fi sound; we ran into another friend/Milwaukee musician after the Mittenfest performance who told us <i>Demonseed</i> was recorded completely analogue. That sound enhances the DIY garage vibe of the music, which is great 60′s-inspired surfy garage punk with an occasional dose of grunge (“<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA1vVptFYyA&amp;list=PLm-jO6xCUikOMEGMGVgZhzB3P57WQf4Hz&amp;index=7">Love Doll</a>”). My top tracks include “Love Doll,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa7Sf3PjqZI&amp;list=PLm-jO6xCUikOMEGMGVgZhzB3P57WQf4Hz&amp;index=4&amp;t=0s">Meat Stick</a>,” “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=015I90zbC8E&amp;list=PLm-jO6xCUikOMEGMGVgZhzB3P57WQf4Hz&amp;index=4">Zombie Baby</a>,” the psychedelic punk freak-out “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXcwYjPoQY4&amp;list=PLm-jO6xCUikOMEGMGVgZhzB3P57WQf4Hz&amp;index=9">You’re Not the Walrus</a>” and the title track “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmP06GrBTLA&amp;list=PLm-jO6xCUikOMEGMGVgZhzB3P57WQf4Hz&amp;index=10">Demonseed</a>.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Replacements “Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash” 1981. Twin/Tone Records. Today, December 31st, is Replacements’ vocalist, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter Paul Westerberg’s 59th birthday (b. 1959). <i>Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash</i> was the band’s first studio LP and is considered to be one of the vanguards of the Midwest 80′s punk sound, though for the most part I’d call it power pop with a punk mentality and some Sex Pistol-ish riffs (the LP’s cover states it should be “filed[d] under power trash” &#8211; also accurate). I’ll admit to never having been a big Replacements fan (partly because I’m not fond of Westerberg’s voice) but I do have a fondness for most things coming out of Minneapolis, a city I visited frequently as a teenager in the 80′s and we continue to go to around once a year for shows and friends (and a few good record stores). Of the handful of Replacements albums we have, this is probably my favorite, with songs that reference fellow-MN’ers Hüsker Dü (“<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwLJwHRJcn4">Somethin to Dü</a>”), New York Dolls’ and Heartbreakers’ Johnny Thunders (“<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHXBOoDmQk8">Johnny’s Gonna Die</a>”) and a totally 80′s Midwest punk pastime “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYhT7KmsNZo">Hangin Downtown</a>.”</p>
<p>Allmusic’s review is a long-read but really great and I definitely have at least a bit more appreciation for The Replacements having read it. Here it is: “Part of the Replacements’ appeal always was that they didn’t quite fit into any tidy category and nowhere was that truer than on their 1981 debut, <i>Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash</i>. Falling over themselves to fit into the Minneapolis hardcore scene, the ‘Mats played fast and loose, which was part of the problem – they were too loose, lacking the discipline to fit within hardcore, which even in &#8217;81 was adhering to the loud-fast rules that would later morph into straight-edge. Then again, that was a common problem in the Twin Cities, as Hüsker Dü also were too big and blustery to be a standard hardcore band, but where the Huskers traded in violence and fury at this early stage, the Replacements wallowed in cheap thrills. Danger still pulsated in their music, but the group didn’t inflict emotional damage: they were a party spinning out of control, getting sloppier with every beer swilled. The messiness on <i>Sorry Ma</i> is hardly confined to the cheap, thin recording or the band’s playing – they sound as if they’re stumbling upon each other as they fumble for the next chord – but how the songs pile up one after another, most not managing to get close to the two-minute mark. Such brevity could be dubbed as hardcore, but apart from the volume and speed, this doesn’t feel like hardcore: there’s too much beer and boogie for that. Then, there’s also the fact that the Replacements reveled in mid-American junk culture, with Paul Westerberg boasting that he’d bought himself a headache the very year that Black Flag sneered that they had nothing better to do then having a bottle of brew as they watched the TV. Neither did the Replacements, but they sang about this with no disdain, as they enjoyed being “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Dtkf22YPk">Shiftless When Idle</a>,” as one of the best songs here called it. This could be called defiant if it seemed like the &#8216;Mats were raging against anything besides garden-variety suburban troubles, as there’s nothing that attacks other punkers (quite the opposite; there are love letters to Johnny Thunders and Hüsker Dü), and even when Westerberg is chronicling Midwestern ennui, there’s a sense of affection to his laments, as if he loves the place and loves acting like an angry young crank. This strain of premature curmudgeonly humor is undercut by the boundless energy of the band, so happy to make noise they don’t care if they’re recycling old-time rock &amp; roll riffs that are closer to amped-up Rockpile than the Ramones, as there’s more swing to the rhythms than that – swing that careens wildly and madly, but swings all the same. And that’s what made the Replacements seem so different with their debut – they didn’t fit anywhere within American punk, but there’s no defiance here; there’s a celebration of who and what they are that’s genuinely, infectiously guileless. It may not quite sound like any other American punk record but <i>Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash</i> is one of the best LPs the entire scene produced in the early &#8217;80s.”</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Crucifucks “Wisconsin” 1987. Alternative Tentacles Records, recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, WI. Just picked up this Midwestern punk album this weekend, though it’s actually a second-time purchase; I bought it back in ‘87 but gave it away as a Christmas present (nothing shows the spirit of holiday giving more than a Crucifucks record). If you weren’t in the Midwest in the 80′s, and into punk, you may not know of The Crucifucks (being from Wisconsin, we certainly did and they played all-ages shows around Northeastern Wisconsin). From Discogs: “The Crucifucks were a hardcore punk rock band from Lansing, MI, USA, formed in 1981 by vocalist Doc Dart. The group was known for Dart’s shrill voice, anti-authoritarian lyrics, and extreme antagonism. Unusual for a participant in the mostly youth-orientated hardcore scene, Dart was 28 years old when the band started. The band’s original drummer was Steve Shelly, who eventually ended up as the permanent drummer for Sonic Youth.” <i>Wisconsin</i> was the band’s second album and they broke up soon after its release, though Dart formed a new iteration of the band briefly in the 90′s and released their final album <i>L.D. Eye</i> in ‘96.</p>
<p><i>Wisconsin</i> is fast-paced 80′s punk with Dr. Demento-meets-Jay-Tiller (Tiller is from Wisconsin’s Couch Flambeau) level vocals, which is a bit off-putting, borderline ear-bleeding but it does make The Crucifucks unique. The musicianship is surprisingly competent, with lots of big rhythm and remarkable, almost prog-rock level hypnotic guitar riffs and solos (ie “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtFTxAfGI_w">Concession Stand</a>”). There’s also some crazy experimentation, especially on the epic track “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLJfCPgbPZM">When the Top Comes Off</a>” where all of the above-mentioned characteristics are present (and the screechy grating vocals are on overdrive). The tracks “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAoD5sjc-7U">Artificial Competition</a>” and “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O467l4TqRBY">The Savior</a>” both have great grooves but for home-state solidarity, I’m going to say the title track “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESULP30w94I">Wisconsin</a>” is my favorite on the album though it’s probably the least-punk track on the LP with a rather delightful lilting jangly guitar that morphs into a great blues riff (but it still has Dart’s nails-on-chalkboard screech).</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Alan Wilson Experience “I’m Coming” b/w “Let It Rip” release date unknown (possibly late 80′s), Iguana Records. Super-weird and obscure, low budget (the record “sleeve” is badly folded cheap paper), lo-fi trashy Midwestern garagey psychobilly punk. Pretty sure this is the only release for both The Alan Wilson Experience and for Iguana Records; there is zero web presence for either entity save a lonely entry on Discogs and another little record auction site. The music is swampy, surf and blues-inspired guitar and beats with a punk attitude and a heavy dose of humor: “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YJ3z_FbLa8">Let It Rip</a>” refers to burping. The track is a very competent guitar riff instrumental punctuated by loud and rude belches that reverberate impressively, making me grateful the “rip” didn’t refer to flatulence.</p>
