The Blind Shake “Live at Third Man Records” 2017. 7″ single, Third Man Records. This past weekend we headed to Nashville and of course hit Third Man (and dropped a large chunk of cash), picking up this single among many other records, t-shirts and other assorted swag. Sometimes we have amazingly awesome luck: we popped back in a second time and our friend, a Nashville resident and the drummer/vocalist for Volk, happened to be working (we didn’t know she worked there). The store was pretty slow and none of the execs were in so she gave us a private tour of the back area at Third Man which includes Jack White’s office (he wasn’t there), a super-swanky lounge area that doubles the green room for bands when there are performances, the warehouse where all Third Man merchandise is stored and shipped from, plus the famous Blue Room where bands perform and record their “Live at Third Man” releases. Absolutely no photos are allowed, ever, in the lounge and office area but photos are allowed in the Blue Room and the other areas. As you can see, it really is quite blue:

The Blind Shake are an awesome noisy garage punk band from Minneapolis that we’ve seen a few times, though not recently (pandemic and I’m pretty sure one of the Blaha brothers that form the nucleus of the group moved to another state). The two tracks on their 7″ are “I Shot All the Birds” (a darkly sinister noise rocker) from their 2016 album Celebrate Your Worth and “Tar Paper” (messy, noisy, growling and tribal with tons of distortion) from the 2015 LP Fly Right.

Jim and the French Vanilla “Afraid of the House” 2017. Dirtnap Records. Jim and the French Vanilla is the side project of Jim Blaha from the Minneapolis-based “extraterrestrial backyard surf party” noise rock band The Blind Shake. It’s one of a few side projects for the prodigious Blaha brothers; Jim, along with brother Mike, also are in Shadow in the Cracks and Mike also has BLAHA who we are going to see Friday night at the Cactus Club here in Milwaukee.

Afraid of the House has a lot of the same qualities as The Blind Shake’s material: buzzy lo-fi guitars, a chugging rhythm, noise rock distortion and a certain tense level that I described in an earlier blog post as “the bastard child of Jimi Hendrix and Jack White on a cocktail of ‘shrooms and amphetamines” (I was a little tipsy at a Blind Shake show when I wrote that). Despite that level of intensity, the flavor overall is a bit lighter, playful at times even. While the tracks “When You’re Down,” “Grow Like Rabbits” (my favorite on the album) and “Psychic Killer” are ferocious in the Blind Shake spirit, other songs like “I’m Just Sitting Here,” “Back Home” and “Lonely Man” are almost bouncingly bright (in comparison. It’s still pretty intense), reminding me of some Sonic Youth songs from the early 90′s: noise rock with a nod to pop melody. I also dig the lo-fi psychedelic touches like the track “Not Even War” and the mini-instrumental “Green Curtains.”

BLAHA “Fresh Horse” 2017. 3-song 7″ on Slovenly Recordings. BLAHA is The Blind Shake’s Mike Blaha’s solo project (the other Blaha brother in The Blind Shake, Jim, has his own side-project, Jim and the French Vanilla; they also have a joint project, Shadow in the Cracks). (The Blaha’s are as prolific as some of their stated influences – Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees – releasing new music every few months or so.) We saw BLAHA perform this past Friday night at Acme Records in Milwaukee and as expected, Mike and his band saturated the store with their raw fuzzed-out garage rock. Intensity permeates every aspect of BLAHA (I chatted with Mike for a few minutes after the show, discussing The Blind Shake documentary from a few years ago; he said that the interviewers would ask a question, he would answer and they wouldn’t say anything so he’d answer it again and then yet again more emphatically until they’d say “OK, got it.” Mike: “It made me seem really intense.” I laughed. It’s funny because it’s true! It’s difficult to get a good performance photo at Acme but here is a picture from the show, the caption “intense”).

“Fresh Horse” and “All My Cells” on the A-side of the 7″ are, of course, also intense. Stomping beats, distorted and fuzzed guitars, noise rock yet with enough catchy melody to take the edge off the sinister vibe the songs convey. The B-side “The Day We Were Born” is, when compared to the flipside, practically straight-up pop, reminding me of the late 80′s/early 90′s Brit-pop scene, bright flower power garage rock sprinkled with a bit of 21st century grit.

The Blind Shake “I Shot All the Birds” b/w “Tar Paper” 2017. Third Man Records, recorded “live to tape” on Sept. 28th, 2016. The Blind Shake from Minneapolis are brothers Mike (vocals, baritone guitar) and Jim (guitar) Blaha along with drummer Dave Roper (maybe? I feel like the drummers keep swapping around) and play garage-punk inspired “extraterrestrial backyard surf party” noise rock. We’re planning to head to Acme Records here in Milwaukee on Friday to check out one of Mike Blaha’s side projects, BLAHA (they played at Acme this past March) and while BLAHA isn’t quite as toxic-sludge heavy as The Blind Shake, they are still intense and very, very loud.

“I Shot All the Birds” appears on The Blind Shake’s 2016 Celebrate Your Worth (Goner Records). It’s sneering psych-surf, menacingly dense and swampy with a muscular industrial beat. “Tar Paper,” from the 2015 Fly Right LP (Slovenly Recordings) is a brutal stomper, a wall of sound draped with a cacophony of angry reverb.

BLAHA “The Art of Not” 2017, Wet Bridge Records. BLAHA is one of the side projects of The Blind Shake’s and Shadow in the Cracks’ prolific Mike Blaha. We caught the band on Friday night at Acme Records in Milwaukee (along with local bands Fox Face and The Pukes) and picked up the new LP at the show, so this is the first listen. It has a similar dark intensity with touches of surf-psych like The Blind Shake (especially on “Home-a-less” and “Delicate Foreigner”) but with less density and speed. The instrumental “High Tide, Omaha Beach” is haunting and sparse, the title track “The Art of Not” is menacing with a hypnotic tribal beat while “Loneliness, I Love You” and “Gone Again” have flavors of indie shoe gaze meets alt-country honky tonk. The show was more raucous than this LP; I think many of the songs BLAHA performed were from their new cassette 499-456 (Kind Turkey Records) which we also purchased at the show and haven’t gotten a chance to listen to yet (I don’t trust our cassette players to not munch up the tape, so will probably do the download soon).

The Blind Shake “Live in San Francisco” 2015, Castle Face Records. We caught The Blind Shake last night at the Cactus Club in Milwaukee and they played many of the songs from this performance in 2013, including one of my favorites “I’m Not an Animal.” Furious energy with sounds ranging from serpentine swampy to, what I somewhat drunkenly tapped out on my notes app during the show, the bastard child of Jimi Hendrix and Jack White on a cocktail of ‘shrooms and amphetamines. Garagey, punk noise and surf all mixed tempestuously together by the Blaha brothers out of Minneapolis.

Besides “I’m Not an Animal,” Live in San Francisco features another favorite of mine from their 2011 release Seriousness: “Hurracan,” as well as the title track, “Seriousness.” Also included are songs from the 2013 Key To a False Door: “Garbage on Glue” and “Porto Alegre;” “Wexford Scramble” from the 2007 album Carmel; and “Young Carnival Waste” from 2014′s Breakfast of Failures.

Opening for The Blind Shake were Milwaukee bands Devils Teeth (who wore all-white outfits in the mode of Captain Stubing from “The Love Boat” – complete with cap!) and Gallery Night. Gallery Night were especially killer: their drummer, Kelsey Kaufman, is outta control amazing. I found a clip of their performance opening for Thee Oh Sees – check it out!

Shadow in the Cracks “Shadow in the Cracks” 2015. Goner Records. Self-described as “Antarctic sheets of noise and melody celebrating the hopelessness of survival using a kick drum, Indian bells, guitars, vocals,” Shadow in the Cracks is the side-project of The Blind Shake’s Blaha brothers, Mike (vocals, baritone guitar) and Jim (guitar). The record is loud, dense and dark; it’s always amazing to me how just two musicians can engender this much musical force. Filled with wild guitar effects (“Timeless”) and heady exotic flavors (“800 Meters,” “Elephant Seal”), the Blaha brothers weave an ominous trance through the dark atmosphere. One YouTube commenter described their sound as Black Sabbath meets shoe gaze.

Joe went to see Shadow in the Cracks last week at Acme Records (I didn’t go: too tired and had to stay home with Vault-boy). At the in-store concert he picked up this record, got it autographed while chatting with the guys and took a few snapshots of the show. The Blind Shake will be playing at the Cactus Club later this month and that one I do plan to attend.
