Smoke Free Home “Bad News” 2023. SFH Records (self-released), 4 song EP on yellow vinyl from Oshkosh, WI-based dance punks. We finally caught SFH this past weekend at Mile of Music; they’ve been on my radar for awhile now and I was not disappointed. They are GREAT! Fun and snotty with a delivery reminiscent of 80’s punk – think Dead Kennedys but musically low-end only; Smoke Free Home are a three piece with drums (Alex Lautenschlager), bass (Kevin Sonnleitner) and vocals and it 100% works, in fact I think it took us two or three songs into their performance at Rookies in Appleton to realize there wasn’t any guitar. The lead track on this 7″ EP “Bootstraps” is hilarious and a mega ass-shaker (extra funny was that singer Jesse Tubeszewski announced his boss was in the audience and the lyrics to this track are somewhat about going to work) and was for sure a highlight of their performance. The second track “Run” has some sophisticated tempos and a darker edge to it but it still has some serious dance vibes. “Pressure” is dancey too, with a lyrical and musical breakdown (literal and figurative) midway through. The last track, “Stones” has a buzzy grunge flavor, leaning a bit 90’s/aughts emo-punk (not my jam but it’s a’right).

Joe chatted with the band at the merch table after the show (I ran into a guy from high school I haven’t seen since ’89 so was reliving some of my own 80’s punk memories with him) – SFH play out quite a bit but mostly basement shows, to which we are apparently invited but I’m pretty sure we’ve aged out of that scene, as fun as it probably would be.

The French Irish Coalition “Ten of Swords” 2022 (self-released) on CD because it only exists on that format (and streaming). We picked up their second album (the other: Pistols and Daggers 2010) this past weekend up at Mile of Music from the band. One of the many great things about Mile of Music is that every year we stumble upon a band we’ve never heard of for some random reason: this year it was The French Irish Coalition because they were playing a stage right before a band we wanted to see (Gloom Girl MFG, rockers from Nashville who are amazing but didn’t have any music to purchase). The description of FIC on the MoM app sounded like they’d be up our alley: “Howling slide guitar, booming drums and a live performance that won’t disappoint, this Green Bay based duo aims to make you question how two people can create this much sound.” Accurate!! <img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-15920 no-lazyload" Coalition delivers: crashing drums via Travis Pashek – he’s the Irish and also does some vocals, snotty vocals and Delta blues guitar (in the style of R.L. Burnside, plus Charley Patton who they credit as an inspiration in the liner notes of Ten of Swords. They also credit cheap whiskey) via Julian Routheaux – the French, obviously. Since we had literally never heard of The French Irish Coalition before seeing them this past Saturday, I cannot accurately say what tracks they performed from Ten of Swords but I’m guessing they played a couple of my top picks: the album opener “Might Be the Devil,” “Change” and the title track “Ten of Swords” which has a great punk-reggae beat with a Kurt Cobain/Nirvana-like delivery.

Me Like Bees “Disco Two Step” 2022 (self-released). We got to see one of our favorite indie rock bands this past weekend up in Appleton at Mile of Music. Me Like Bees (from Joplin, Missouri) was a last-minute festival addition, jumping in for another Mile fave (Wild Adriatic – we missed seeing them!) and, as always, they put on a hell of a performance to about 2,000 of their “closest friends” (their words, and it’s true. Appleton LOVES Me Like Bees). We first saw them at what I think was their first Mile performance 8 or so years ago (at Emmett’s outdoor stage on a perfect August late afternoon) with their original lineup, including singer/guitarist Luke Sheafer and guitarist Pete Burton, and I completely fell in love with them. We’ve caught them several times since, at Mile as well as at shows in the Milwaukee area. Like many bands, they’ve gone through a few drummers over the years (currently Ben Davis is in that role) but the “new” bassist, Jake Bennet, stuck when he joined in 2017 after serving as their merch guy. They still have it: shimmering, stomping, energetic and ass-shaking indie pop, MLB are just so fun and great guys.

MLB played several of my top picks from Disco Two Step, the band’s 2nd full-length album, including “Animal,” the anthemic “Radio” and the strummy “The Man,” I’m not sure if they played “Square Jaw Pt. 1 & II” but it’s a really great track, a bit epic with lots of rhythm and melodic changes and while I’m not really a fan of the “stomp and holler” genre, the track “Disco is Dead” is pretty great.

I have no proof but I’m guessing MLB plays their best shows in the Fox Valley – I truly hope they continue to show up at Mile and I know as long as they stick together that they will continue to perform in Wisconsin, particularly in the Appleton area. Their fans are wildly loyal and will show up for the Bees.

Lunar Moth “In the Mourning” 2022. 4 song EP on clear vinyl (limited to 25 copies). Lunar Moth are a heavy garage-psych band from Madison, WI with lots of nods to 90’s alt-rock – think the Breeders or Milwaukee’s the Lovelies. Their Bandcamp bio describes them as “sludgy riffs, spacey vocals, fuzzy bass, and hard hitting drums” and that’s 100% accurate. I’ve heard of Lunar Moth (I’m pretty sure they’ve played Milwaukee venues a few times since their first release in 2019) but this past weekend up at Mile of Music was my first time seeing them and I loved them!

Amber’s voice is clear and unembellished, which is perfect for the dense rocking she accompanies on guitar, and with the heavy heavy rhythm of Mac on bass and Gage on drums. Since this is the first of their releases I’ve purchased, I wasn’t overly familiar with most of the songs they played, with the exception of the first two songs, both of which appear on In the Mourning. My favorite is the hook-filled and highly addictive crashing ass-shaker “Love Me Forever” which I’ve woken up to playing in my head for a couple of days now, not even kidding. The other song is one they’ve also released as a single, “Sunshine Veins,” which is lovely and clever with a Pixies loud-quiet-loud formula. I am very much looking forward to seeing Lunar Moth play again soon.

Brother O’Brother “Skin Walker” 2022. Romanus Records. I’ve been sitting on this LP for one month but since Brother O’Brother had their official record release show this past weekend at Romanus Fest in Indianapolis (which we had to miss since I was out of the country), I’m finally able to feature their latest release. We picked it up at one of their performances at Mile of Music in Appleton at the beginning of August and as always, their set was fast, heavy, loud and filled with electric sweat-drenched energy.

Skin Walker takes Brother O’Brother’s already monstrous sound to the next level. Thundering guitars and drums are HEAVY and passionate lyrics meld into a wall of head-banging fury. My favorite track is the ass-shaking, boot-stomping “Who Wants It, Who Gets It.” Also amazing is the psychedelic speed-metal “Elixir,” the single “Cyborg,” originally released in 2020 as part of a split 7″ with The Pack A.D., and the title track “Skin Walker” which they performed at the Mile of Music set at Chadwicks on Friday August 5th. The digital version of Skin Walker is set to drop this upcoming weekend so audio and video links will be more readily available after that. And for those unfortunate souls who haven’t made it to a BoB show lately to get the LP directly from the source, more vinyl will be available to pre-order from the band’s website in about a week.

And because Chris (guitar/vocals) and Warner (drums) are really great, sweet guys and know our kid really well, they recorded a video message for him after the show since he wasn’t able to be there with us. (Note: we did not leave him home with just ravioli to eat, but there was ramen)

Gyasi “Pronounced Jah-See” 2022. Alive Records, limited edition purple translucent vinyl. AMAZING glam rock, my favorite new-to-me band at this past weekend’s Mile of Music Fest in Appleton, Wisconsin. T. Rex/Ziggy Stardust/New York Dolls vibes for days, with dashes of Zeppelin as their nods to the past, infused with modern Ty Segall, Black Keys and White Stripes blues-garage riffs. Despite the very not-glam hour and weather (hotter than fuck at 3:00 p.m. in full sun), Gyasi put on a fantastic show and I was hooked from the first note and strut of sparkles and platform boots.

I’ve had Pronounced Jah-See on repeat since we picked it up at the show on Friday afternoon and I love every single track. The opener “Burn It Down” is an all-out glam rocker, followed by the blues stomper “Tongue Tied“: think Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney dressed in sparkles and heels. “Androgyne” is, I’m guessing, autobiographical and so damn catchy, bendy blues guitar celebrating individuality. “Black Strap” goes big and heavy; “All Messed Up,” the strutting “Fast Love” and “Walk On” go straight-up early 70’s T. Rex/Ziggy era Bowie with shredding guitar. “Little Tramp” feels earlier T. Rex, more psychedelic English folk (there’s flute!). “Feed Your Face” would be comfy hanging out on pretty much any Ty Segall album and “She Don’t Care” on a Jack White LP. (I should reiterate here how much I love Ty Segall and Jack White.) “Kiss Kiss” is so fun, like Zeppelin and New York Dolls had the most fabulous baby ever. “Swordfight” does not appear on the vinyl release but is on the digital version: not only is it a heavy-duty head-banging rocker but it also makes me laugh — there absolutely was air-sword during their performance and it was glorious. The opening lyrics of the closer “Godhead” sum up Gyasi nicely: “Well me and all my friends, we sparkle and we preen, outcasts writing fables…” I cannot wait for Gyasi to swing back through our area; I am utterly smitten with the music, the look, the performance – they are the full package and without irony: just pure straight-up genuine love for glamorous and heavy rock and roll. Including several videos here as they are all too good to miss.

Lung “All The King’s Horses” 2018. Sofaburn Records, on clear vinyl. One of the most exciting and original bands currently out there, Lung plays super-dark, heavy art-punk/noise rock. The dark and heavy: Lung (from Cincinnati) are a two-piece featuring Kate Wakefield on electric cello and Daisy Caplan on drums so it’s all low-end. But soaring over the top is gorgeous art and beauty in the form of operatic vocals. Literally. Kate is a trained opera singer so her range is insane. We had the absolute pleasure of seeing Lung perform twice this past weekend at Mile of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, one of our favorite music events that we missed terribly last year when it was canceled. It was Lung’s first time at MoM and they, like us, loved it (we got a chance to talk to Kate, Daisy and Daisy’s partner/band manager, Rachelle Caplan for awhile when one of their sets was cancelled due to rain). Anyone who ever sees Lung play live will tell you this: “You have GOT to see Lung.” (Our first time seeing them was two years ago in 2019 at Romanus Fest – our jaws fell to the ground and we were instant fans.) Their recording material is amazing but seeing and hearing them play these songs live is a mind bending, spine vibrating experience. Daisy bashes the beejezzus out of his kit and somehow also manages to – I think – take samples of Kate’s voice in real-time and then make layer upon layer upon layer of harmonization. Unreal. And though Kate is pretty much stuck on her seat with the cello, her performance is mesmerizing and dynamic: she uses her entire body to play and makes intense eye contact with the audience that draws you even deeper into the music.

All The King’s Horses is Lung’s second release. (I believe we picked up their brand new album at the show but we’re still decompressing from the weekend.) They played several of my favorite tracks from the LP including “Brock,” “Butcher” and “Bodies of Water,” I’m not sure if they played “The Overgrowth” and “Horsebath” but those tracks are killer as well. They definitely did not play the sole cover on the record, David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid of Americans,” because Mile of Music has a no-cover-songs policy; only original music is allowed. I think Lung will be back in the area in a couple of months and we cannot wait to see them again.

Marah in the Mainsail “Bone Crown” 2017. Last Triumph Records. Now known as Coyote Kid (they very recently changed the band’s name). Coyote Kid was one of our favorite new-to-us artists at last weekend’s Mile of Music festival in Appleton, WI. From Minneapolis, they have a unique mixture of goth, calliope-fun-house, spaghetti westerns, soaring harmonies, gristled melodies and a touch of punk sensibilities. Coyote Kid put on an amazing performance at Houdini Plaza under the scorching sun, ironic as the band’s look and vibe is much better suited to a dark deep forest, or at least a late-night dance floor. I got a chance to chat with a few band members after their set while picking up this LP (their second, another one is due soon under their new name): singer/keyboardist Cassandra Valentine, singer/guitarist Austin Durry and bassist/crazed-hype-man Austin Wilder. Their excellent trombonist John Baumgartner, who adds a soaring excitement to their music, had likely fled the heat by that point – the poor guy was wearing black jeans and a long-sleeved black sweatshirt which probably raised his internal temp to 110 degrees.

Bone Crown is a concept album that tells the story of “The Rise and Fall of the Great Fox King,” and a download of the story’s narration is available from their website. It’s a dark fairy tale – all of the good ones are – with the tracks melding perfectly to one another, cohesive without being repetitive or boring. My favorite tracks after this first listen are “Fox Hole,” “Fisticuffs,” “Everybody Knows,” “The Great Beyond,” and the title track “Bone Crown,” Because Coyote Kid was new to me, I’m not sure of how many of these songs they played at their Mile of Music set but I’m looking forward to seeing them again after getting more familiar with their music – they put on quite a show.

Mutts “Separation Anxiety” 2012. Self-released on colored vinyl. We picked up Mutts’ second full-length LP (they have a couple of older EP’s) at one of their performances at Appleton’s Mile of Music Festival this past weekend. MoM is a 4+day fest in my hometown that is one of my highlights of the year: hundreds and hundreds of free concerts scattered throughout downtown bars, parks, parking lots and even alleys. The Mutts show we caught was at one of my favorite venues, the Fox River House, Appleton’s oldest tavern. The shows are held out back under a beautiful old tree – picturesque but also subject to the whims of the weather. Mostly the weather was perfect this year, warm and sunny, but Wisconsin can be volatile and late afternoon on Saturday a torrential downpour and high winds came pretty much out of nowhere right before the Phillip-Michael Scales (who is BB King’s nephew) and Mutts show (Mutts are Scales’ backup band). Undeterred, we sought shelter in a little alcove by the parking lot, umbrella in hand, and waited out the storm.

Sometimes bad weather puts a literal damper on things but in this case, it created a sense of gleeful solidarity among the audience members who stayed for the show once the festival crew swept away the standing water from the stage and removed all of the hastily thrown down tarps. Scales was great, the Mutts guys providing a solid backing for his “dive bar soul.” Then Mutts hit the stage, raucous, energetic, loud and so much fun! They describe their sound as “grounge” which I’m guessing is lounge-grunge mashup and is fairly accurate; as is the quote from their bio that they sound “like Tom Waits fronting a garage band,” mainly due to singer/keyboardist Mike Maimone’s gravelly vocals and vibe.

Rounding out Mutts’ lineup is guitarist/bassist Bob Buckstaff and drummer Ian Tsan. Tsan is a relatively recent addition to the band, on the LP Separation Anxiety drums are played by Chris Pagnani.

Mutts are from Chicago and have been around for almost exactly 10 years, touring relentlessly these past several months for that anniversary. Weirdly this is only the second time I’ve seen them: the first was a year ago in Indianapolis for the inaugural Romanus Records Festival (which we will be heading to again this upcoming weekend and I think Mutts are on the bill) so I can’t really be certain if their sound has shifted or not. But their live show at MoM was a lot more energetic than their 2012 release so I really need to get on checking out their newer recorded material. I do like Separation Anxiety especially the more upbeat tracks like “Half Mile,” the funky “Apathetic Stars,” and the heavy “Tire Swing Blues” – that one really earns the term “grounge.”

The Suitcase Junket “Pile Driver” 2017. Signature Sounds Recordings. Still coming down off my Mile of Music fest high from this past weekend, I’m spinning another favorite artist who was a new to us (he’s played MoM years past), the one-man band of Matt Lorenz, who was accidentally – hilariously – introduced at the Paper Valley Grand Ballroom performance as The Suitcase Junkie, to which he dryly quipped, “yep, I’ve got suitcases running through my veins.” The description from the MoM website initially drew me in: “the songs are played on instruments built of broken bottles, twisted forks, dried bones, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, a toy keyboard and an overhead compartment worth of luggage.”

A self-decrbied “swamp yankee,” Lorenz’s sound is at once traditional (mixing Americana, folk, blues and honky tonk) and utterly modern-experimental and unique. Lorenz managed to pack an entire stage’s worth of sound into a small piece of stage real estate and sprinkled warm, amusing anecdotes and jokes throughout the performance, including introducing his band: “the left heel plays…etc.” Because his show at Mile of Music was my first exposure to The Suitcase Junket (and we picked up this LP at the end of the concert), I’m not entirely certain of what tracks he played from the album, but I know he played “What Was I Gonna Say?” as he got the entire audience to sing a call-and-response during the chorus (here is a great video from a past performance that also is a great example of his onstage charm and humor). I think he also played “The Next Act,” the lead track from Pile Driver as well as “Beta Star” and “Swamp Chicken.” According to his website, The Suitcase Junket has combined streams of 1.25 million on Spotify and was named to Spotify’s Best of 2016 Folk & Americana and Blues & Roots Rock playlists. Lorenz caught the attention of National Public Radio who chose his video session for “Earth Apple” from his 2015 album Make Time as one of the year’s favorite sessions.
