Diet Lite “Double Wide Yukon” 2025. We picked up the Milwaukee garage punks latest LP at their record release show this past Friday night at the Vivarium. There isn’t much online regarding labels and vinyl variants so I’m guessing this might be self-released and limited edition. I’m hesitant to say that these guys are one of my current local faves as every time I seem to write that down, the band in question seems to break up within a year. (so shhhhh….these guys are one of my current faves). We’ve seen them several times this past year and their release party show did not disappoint. High high energy, fun and danceable plus multi-talented: Max Niemann and Kelson Kuzdas each sing, play guitar and bass and swap duties mid-set, all the while Evan Marsalli keeps up a furious rhythm on the drums. I believe they do this on Double Wide Yukon as well. The album is their 2nd or 3rd full-length, though the internet is as fuzzy about that as it is on the other details, and they played it in its entirety (plus a bunch of other material in the second half of the concert). My top tracks on the record were the same top picks from the show: album opener “Pack it Up,” the rollicking rockin’ rhythm and blues “It’s All Too Much,” the ridiculously ass-shaking “A Hole in the Ground,” the short and snappy “Jackass II” (the title of which I think they said they’d keep until the show sued them to stop) and touch of metal rocker “Shittah.” There’s definitely a secret or at least a not-named-track at the end of Side B which isn’t named on the album cover nor on the digital track listing on their Bandcamp page – it starts as disjointed riff which then develops into barely contained blues punk instrumental mayhem…which then abruptly stops without warning. Kinda like their performances (not the abrupt stop part, they finish their shows like normal people). Their crowd can be a bit obnoxious, but sharpen your elbows, stand a bit off to the side and get rocking as these kids are definitely alright.

Here’s their track “A Hole in the Ground” from this past summer’s Summerfest performance. I didn’t shoot this video but we were at that show (possibly standing next to the person who filmed it) and it was hot and very very fun.

The Quilz “Are You Still Out Tonight?” split 7″ with Xposed 4Heads “Ultra Cloud” 2020. Milwaukee synthpop /new wave retro 80’s mash up: each band performs their original track along with a remix/redo of the other’s song. We caught The Quilz last weekend at our neighborhood park’s annual Pumpkin Pavilion, where they performed an electric selection of spooky – but danceable! – Halloween-adjacent songs.

The Quilz’s “Are You Still Out Tonight?” is electro-dream pop, shimmery bright with a few dark-edged touches and nods to the early 80’s Euro-synthpop sound. The Xposed 4Heads version of the track has a driving beat and bass background, making it way less dreamy and much more urgent, but keeps the synthpop vibe. Xposed 4Heads are heavily influenced by Devo so their “Ultra Cloud” absolutely has that keyboard/guitar 80’s dancey space geek mood. The Quliz’s remix sounds pretty similar to the original, with maybe a bit more emphasis on the bleep-bloop synths plus an intro that maybe had some Duran nods (always a good thing). Both bands are fun to see live – I don’t remember if they’ve done a joint show but it would be a good one.

While neither of these songs is on this video, here’s a bit of The Quilz performance from last week filmed by man-about-Milwaukee Juan:

We learned – and laughed – a lot, including getting a full reading of the Hallelujah Ward manifesto. I believe he also said the record was something like 5 years in the making, started during the pandemic when he first worked out the guitar licks for the LP. Waldoch is backed by MKE celeb drummer Dan Didier (in, like, a zillion bands – currently also in Fight Dice, formerly in The Promise Ring, Maritime and Dramatic Lovers, though the latter might still be a thing?) and bassist Paul Hancock (I guess the band has gone through a few bassists since its inception).

They played most of the tracks during their set, including some of my favorites from the album. The opener “Your Uncertain Shadow” (its video a love letter to Milwaukee from Waldoch who is – both in the video and in real life – a true man about town. In fact, I’m fairly certain the tunnel he walks through at one point is at the end of our street), “Crown” (a seething nod to he-who-shall-not-be-named at the show), the heartbreaking and anthemic “Nobody’s Ghost,” the excellent rocker “Diet Suicide” (on the LP singer Liv Mueller from The Lovelies joins on vocals) and the jaw-dropping “The Ring of Brightest Angels, Around Heaven.” While the 80’s and 90’s influences are strong (even if I couldn’t hear them, we’ve seen Waldoch at a ton of shows like Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, Love and Rockets and The Cure: Waldoch is a Cure megafan), Everybody Swoons is not steeped in nostalgia, rather it feels very modern both in the songwriting and production. You can watch/listen to the entire set in video linked below the video for “Your Uncertain Shadow.”

It’s roughly jangled pop with lots of nods to 60’s pop and garage (organ/keyboards courtesy of Andy Harris formerly of Goodnight Loving) and a wall-of-sound production style. I’m not sure if I didn’t notice on the other Sugar Stems records we have or if it’s just this LP but Betsy’s voice often has a very Liz Phair style which adds another layer to its alt vibe. My top tracks include the rocking title track “We Only Come Out at Night,” the raw and raucous “Run Run Rabbit,” the ass-shaking “Radio Heartthrob” and “Haunted” on which one of the male members of the band takes leads on vocals (not sure who though). Since most of these tracks have a razor sharp and sweet edge – and I’m not very familiar with the Stems’ catalog – I’m not sure what, if any, of these tracks Besty performed at her set…but it sure was lovely.

Big Bang Theory “Big Bang Theory” 1986. Funkladen Music (their own label). Bright 80’s new wave, highly funkafied, from Milwaukee. Synth-laden, horns galore and funky funky bass characterize Big Bang Theory. A dash of Oingo Boingo, a splash of Sheila E. and a whole lotta James Brown but white guys in Miami Vice suits. They don’t credit Duran Duran as an influence but I’d be shocked if there weren’t posters of John Taylor on bassist Jo Voboril’s bedroom walls as the style has JT all over. See “Game of Love” especially for a play-that-funky-bass ass-shaking groove. Another good track is “Funk With Me,” which is, obviously, funky. “New Direction” feels very 80’s British blue-eyed soul meets English Beat/General Public and Tears for Fears – it’s probably my top pick on the LP. Overall Big Bang Theory is very danceable, tight and rhythm-forward but it does all start sounding the same after a bit. There’s not much out there about Big Bang Theory (the band, there’s plenty about the TV show) – I learned they recorded the album at Firebrand Recording studio where other MKE acts like The Crusties, Those Spanic Boys, others also did recordings). They do have an active Facebook page and it looks like they’ve been fairly active the past couple of years around Milwaukee. I have zero recollection of the band, but I think their heyday was before I moved here – it looks like they did some touring in the late 80’s and early 90’s, including a set at CBGB’s in ’92. I did find an hourlong performance from ’92 here in Milwaukee, at Steny’s Block Party (lol) where their look had morphed to a more 90’s style:

Various (mostly Milwaukee) Artists “Season for a Smile (Vol. 1)” 2022. A collection of mostly Milwaukee (and at least one Nashville) bands playing Christmas songs, Season for a Smile was “curated on behalf of the Team Bryce Foundation…featuring a broad range of musical genres and collaborations, from folk, power pop, rock ‘n roll, alternative dance, blues and R&B.” Like Volume 2, I’m familiar with the majority of the artists on this comp and have seen several of them perform. My top picks based on genre – Synth-pop/80’s styled dance: Ggoolldd’s “A Change at Christmas” is dreamy electro-pop (though they are not technically from Milwaukee anymore); The Quilz (also on Vol. 2 – Sage Schwarm helped produce both records) with “Christmas Wrapping” and their Nashville buddies Palm Ghosts’ “It’s Always Christmas Time” (we’ve seen Palm Ghosts play out a couple of times – they’re great!). Rock: The Grovelers’ “Sleigh Bell Rock” is punkabilly fun and Lack of Reason’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas” is straight-up rock n’ roll Christmas swagger. Folk: Testa Rosa plays “The Peace Carol” and it’s a sweet little folky number and The Carolinas’ Americana-jangly “Jesus Christ” is lovely. Two bands I am not familiar with but stand out: Keedy’s “Little Drummer Boy” is great dream pop similar to Ggoolldd and Squirrel’s “Final Ocho Kandelikas” about Hanukkah, sung in Ladino performed in an Argentine tango rhythm. This LP is another great local comp for our holiday music collection.

Various (Milwaukee) Artists “Season For a Smile Vol. 2” 2024. A limited edition collection of holiday songs by local Milwaukee musicians to benefit the Team Bryce Foundation which is dedicated to “facilitate improving the lives of children with special needs and their families by helping them achieve their full potential through participation in sports and other activities.” The first track, “Here It is Christmastime” by Driveway Thriftdwellers even features Bryce Tock, the foundation founder’s son who is the inspiration for the organization. I’m familiar with most of the bands on this comp (and know a few personally): there’s the big name BoDeans (though I’m assuming they appear here without founding member Sam Llanas; there’s some really bad blood between him and the other founder Kurt Neumann) on “Christmas Everyday,” local fave Trapper Schoepp joins forces with bluegrass band Chicken Wire Empire on the sad “Christmas in Prison” and Tigera performs “Every Other Day.” A special nod to my friends The Quilz, a fantastic new-wave dream pop duo, who play “Wonderful Christmastime.” (Quilz member Sage Scwarm is one of the LP’s producers.)

But I really want to highlight “O Holy Night” by Heart of Black. I’m so thrilled to finally have something tangible by this band (who I’ve never seen perform but that’s on me – they play out all the time in the greater Milwaukee area). Heart of Black play heavy rock/alternative dance, a mix of covers (influences include Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails) and originals (their song “Down” won the WAMI award for Best Video of 2024 – it is alt-metal and NOT Christmasy). We met Heart of Blacks’ singer Marcus in 2022 in Ibiza, Spain in one of the most random, kismet experiences ever. We had just arrived at our hotel, located right on the Mediterranean, and were hanging out on the patio waiting for our room to be ready for check-in. The couple next to our table leaned over and asked “Are you from Milwaukee?” We thought it was our accent! But no, they noticed Joe’s WMSE shoulder bag. Turns out they were from ‘Tosa and Marcus is huge Duran Duran fan and they were in Ibiza for the Duran three-day festival, same as us. We ended up seeing him and his wife (whose name now escapes me) on and off for the remainder of our time there, including the nail-biting final festival evening where we essentially had to dodge the law to secure a last-second shared ride to the Duran concert from our hotel. The topping was the next morning when our connecting flight to Madrid was running very late and we had to sprint at top speed through the Madrid airport to catch our international flight home. We just made it, gasping, sweating, onto the plane and there, towards the front, were Marcus and wife applauding our dramatic arrival onto the plane. I haven’t seen them since but am enjoying the heck out of their over-the-top last track on Seasons for the Smile – which feels almost as epic as that Ibiza weekend.

Camden “Reel Time Canvas” 2000. Grand Theft Autumn Records. This past Friday was Camden singer William Seidel’s birthday – happy (belated) birthday, BJ! Reel Time Canvas was Milwaukee-based Camden’s first, and last, LP (though they do have a couple of EP’s) before its members went on to mostly become a who’s-who in the MKE scene: BJ was also in Promise Ring, Decibully and most recently Dramatic Lovers; Ryan Weber was also in The Promise Ring and Decibully, and along with Camden member Eric Osterman, Eric and Magill; and Brian “Biju” Zimmerman whose only band – I think – was Camden since became sound-man extraordinaire. The band’s name was inspired by BJ’s time living in the Camden neighborhood of London in the 90’s (I think maybe another member or two of the band was with him but I can’t recall that part of the story.)

Reel Time Canvas is lush, emo and shoe-gazey; on the forefront of the emo-scene that was somewhat centered in Milwaukee in the in early aughts. I missed out on that scene completely (I was listening to much harder stuff) but friends who were into it tell me it was particularly vibrant. I found a couple of reviews of Reel Time Canvas on the Free Music Archive site which are wonderful but also hilarious especially if you know the band personally: “Camden’s first full-length album wins my (non-existant) award for the most gorgeous rock album ever, and I’m not talking album art. I raved about Camden’s previous EP for the most amazing emo-style rock it contained. But here, I have to feel Camden have gone beyond emo’s boundaries and into something that’s completely new and all their own. The first thing you’re going to notice about Camden is their singer. He must have been classically trained, and it’s almost opera-style, soaring to higher notes than you would have thought possible and always quite beautiful. The rest of the rock combines elements from the modern, post-hardcore rock with a sort of lofty, atmospheric rock reminiscent of 80′s Ride. It’s complex and changing throughout, slowing and speeding, changing up the times, at times soft and barely heard at others in your face and aggressive. But it’s never pretentious, and that’s what makes it so downright glorious.” And this from another reviewer: “…imagine you are stuck in an elevator with Morrissey, Braid’s Robert Nanna and Shudder To Think’s Craig Wedren. Say they had all showered and used deodorant and Morrissey was being a sissy for once in his life. And let’s say, for the sake of argument they decided to record a record capturing this experience of uncomfortable solitude. The result I am sure would be similar to Camden’s Reel Time Canvas.” My top two tracks are the opener “Mike, Who is Diary?” and the almost-grunge “Not Without Your Blessing.”

Here’s a photo of me and BJ from 2023 at his graduation from the yoga teacher training I co-direct.

Diamond Life “Neon Dreams” 2024. Triple Eye Industries, limited edition “Rosa Purple” vinyl. Milwaukee electronica/synthpop, Diamond Life is a collaboration by Martin Defatte (Tron Jovi, Guerrilla Ghost) on synths/drums and Bonnie Drinkard (Drinkard Sisters, Craig Brown Band). The debut LP purports to “transport you back to the neon-lit dance floors of the ’80s, where Italo Disco and HI-NRG reigned supreme,” though I find it to be more dream-poppy than Hi-NRG (but my baseline for that is Nitzer Ebb so my perspective could be a bit skewed). The synths are swirly and hypnotic; Drinkard’s vocals match that vibe perfectly with a sno-cone delivery (sweet n’icy). My top tracks are “Back 2 U” and “Love Light.”

I think there’s a hidden track on the album – though I couldn’t actually find it (or it’s only on the CD version): “Self Control” by Raf (1984), a song that “started the explosion and dominance of Italo disco-style recordings in continental European charts during the 1980s.” (Wiki). Weirdly the playlist I chose for this morning’s class was Reflex v. Control which has the Laura Branigan cover of “Self Control” (also 1984, #4 US, #5 UK) – I did not know that it would appear on today’s vinyl pull, especially because it is not listed on the record except for in the liner notes for writing credits. (Speaking of credits, I love that two neighborhood dudes are thanked: Dillon from RushMor Records and Chris from Vanguard/Wiggle Room). Next time I run into Martin I’ll have to ask him about “Self Control” – I can’t find a link anywhere for Diamond Life’s version.

Gallery Night “Gallery Night” 2017. Tall Pat Records. 3 song “EP” by the ultimate un-Googleable Milwaukee garage-punk noise rockers. Fortunately they are/were a neighborhood band so I’ve seen them a bunch of times but because my photo library is a hot mess, I only found a few from a show in 2018 at Cactus Club and then one of singer/guitarist Jim McCann (aka Hollywood; Baseball Furies) and drummer Kelsey Kaufmann (Cougar Den, Cactus Club proprietress).

Just three short songs: the dark “One By One,” which sounds a lot like another current Milwaukee band, Convert, with whom I think they played a show at Cactus, maybe pre-pandemic; “S.O.S.” which is jangularly intense, and the menacing “Got a Gun.” I’ve been sitting on this 7″ (plus their other two releases) forever. Hollywood is spinning records tonight at the new bar in Bay View that he co-owns; it’s a Repo Man theme and the energy of this EP is similarish to the Repo Man vibe.
